Two weeks ago I received some rather sad news from my neighbors in the apartment next door. Jerry and his wife, Debbie(names changed for privacy reasons), have both given notice on their jobs here. Tonight will be their last night here as tomorrow they are moving back to Iowa to be closer to their families and friends. I have been living here in Albuquerque for the past 3 years now. Five years ago, my wife, Brenda, passed away shortly after a car crash; we were living in Denver at the time. I was devastated but knew that I needed to be strong and move on with my life, as this is what Brenda would have wanted. 2 years later, I received the news that I was being laid off from my job. Following this development, I knew it was time to start seriously reading the classifieds. About 6 weeks later I received a call from the company here in Albuquerque. The person on the phone asked if I could be here in a week and I said sure; moving wasn't a big issue for me as I was ready for a change anyway. In the last 3 years, I have seen many people come and go in this apartment building. Of course as most of us know, this is simply a fact of apartment life. Tonight I will be going out to dinner with Debbie and Jerry. In the morning we will all be going out to breakfast before the movers arrive. They have been such wonderful neighbors and I am really going to miss them. Although they have vowed to stay in touch, I am certainly not counting on it as unfortunately it is usually "Out of sight, out of mind" rather than "Absence makes the heart grow fonder". Shortly after my 65th birthday, I plan on retiring, packing everything up, taking my cat, and moving back to my hometown of Springfield, Missouri where I will be spending the rest of my life. Well folks, I would really love to stick around and keep writing this "short story" but I'm expecting company anytime now. My next door neighbors are really wonderful people and I want to spend as much time with time with them as I can because after tomorrow morning I will most likely never see them again.
