Who Killed the Electric Car
Is a movie that is out. Stan and I watched it last weekend.
In today’s world where gas prices are on a some what steady rise we all need to start thinking about using alternative fuels and one of those was, and I say was, because the car is no longer in production and hasn't been for a few years, the EV1 car which was all
ELECTRIC!!!
Admittedly it didn't get very far on a charge, just 60 miles but someone had already started working on extending the life of the batteries that ran the car.
GM made the car. It was released in California and Arizona as a leased car only in 1996.
It went over very well, even getting some local actors leasing them and falling in love with them. It seems they were a very comfortable easy car to take care of, just plug it into an outlet and charge it up. The batteries of course went with you and you could charge it let's say at a friends house for extended traveling.
There were around 8000 of them made. So what happened to them?
Gm removed them from being leased. They not only removed them they scraped them into tiny bits of metal, well all but a few that were deactivated and now sit in moth ball heaven.
Here was a car that could get you back and forth to work if your job was close enough, a car that didn't dirty the air, that was liked, no lets say loved by all that drove it, and one we could certainly use today.
There are many theories on why GM removed it, but I am not here to tell you why I think they did that. I am here to try and let people know what happened. To get you all to rent the movie and to check everything out on the internet, and maybe if enough people know about it, we could put pressure on the automobile companies to re issue it.
So if you get the chance and want to learn all the facts about the car then please rent it.
