John Steinbeck's The Winter of Our Discontent
I spent this weekend reading John Steinbeck’s The Winter of Our Discontent. I bought a first edition copy in a used book store a few years ago. I’ve wanted to read it and yet I knew it would absorb me and my time. Steinbeck’s East of Eden was like that and that book has 600 pages. Well, yesterday I was bored and I wanted to have my time absorbed. So, I dove into The Winter of Our Discontent and I just finished it.

John Steinbeck’s sentences are breathtaking. I couldn’t resist using a pencil to underline poignant sentences and paragraphs. Sure, it’s a first edition and all … but the sentences and depth of meaning needed recognition from my pencil.

The book has left me sad. The reality of its theme which dominates our present society hurts my heart. How wonderful it must have been to live as an adult before the 1960s. A social consciousness of honesty was the norm in those days. There was a habit of conduct that died around the 1960s and Steinbeck caught this death.

I’d love to read what others think of this masterpiece.
