Subsidy Publishing

I have a friend in my writer's support group who is considering self-publishing her book. She likes the idea of POD (print on demand) Recently Dorrance Publishing expressed an interest in her romance material. Have you heard anything negative about it? Can any of you tell me what subsidy publishing is. They suggest she get an agent. She doesn't want to put out a lot of money and has no intention of promoting her book. She is writing it mostly for friends and family. Any advice?
