In Des Moines Iowa where he was having a concert, Billy Joel just happened to check out the Dream Machines shop, a shop which specializes in vintage and muscle cars. Owner of the shop Doug Klien said that Joel spotted a burgundy 1973 VW Beetle and said that eh thought is was a neat car and he liked the color. Then he added that it was a great car for the beach. He ended up buying it. Doug Klien would not disclose how much he paid for the car but he said that it was the least expensive in the shop. He speculated that Joel loved the year of the car as well as the style as he mentioned that 1973 was the year that Piano Man came out and ti was one of Joel's biggest hits. As a bonus Joel gave Klien second row tickets and backstage passes to his concert.
