More world music
David Byrne may be more well known to everyone as the lead singer of the Talking Heads, an alternative group from the 1970's, but I recently learned about his project to bring music from around the world to the attention of the American audience.
Luaka Bop is the name of his company and you can find out all you need to know about all of the artists he represents at that website (just click on "Luaka Bop" for the link).

Give them a listen and let us know what you think of them.

lots and lots of the stuff
People talk about " African music" lets not forget Mali is a long way from the Cape and Nigeria a long way from Kenya. All over this continent different styles are being played and it is worthwhile for people to" dip in" as I'm sure there is something you will like.
Likewise experimental music from Eastern Europe using traditional vocal and instrumentation mixed with modern styles and production techniques is now becomnig available thanks to the wonders of the internet . And of course my favourite Calypso ,yes It's still there despite Reggae seeming to be the sound of the Carribean.
Just take a chance ,listen with open ears and you might be surprised.

World Music
If you have been paying attention you might notice that there is some really good music being produced around the world. The movie "Everything is Illuminated" with Elijah Wood featured a Ukrainian musician named Eugene Hutz as the local man who escorts Wood around the Ukraine to find a woman who saved his grandfather's life during WWII. Besides being a quirky movie, though, the music of Gogol Bordello (the band Hutz sings with) was appropriately used and I really fell in love with it! They call themselves gypsy punks, which means they use their background influences and traditional instruments to play some of the livliest music I have heard in a long time!

Go HERE to sample some of their music (I recommend Little Spy) or HERE to download from itunes or purchase a cd.

Another group worthy of your attention is Considerate Lovers, a band out of Norway. Their Myspace has four songs you can listen to in order to get an idea of how good they are! Fast, loud, FUN!!
