The Rescue of 200 Horses
Posted On 02/21/2007 11:53:33
A man in Israel sent me this very touching video of how, in the Netherlands, 200 horses were saved.

Easy

Mood? Frozen!!! LOL I just came back from dropping Easy (Gene) off at the bus station here in downtown Chicago. We missed his direct to Detroit bus so he's going to Toledo and then home from there. UGG! But we had a very nice evening, talking and getting to know each other (purely platonic..ok? LOL). He is a perfect gentleman and a wonderful friend. I'm just sorry he had to endure the ride into the city in my not-heated car (seems some wire makes contact or not at will, so I never know if I'll have heat or not and this morning at zero degress of course it was NOT).

So just wanted to let everyone know, one, as he said I should confirm, he IS real (LOL) and two, his progress on his way home to see his mom and dad and other family and friends in Detroit.

I have a plaque here in the house that says "A Warm Home is a Blessing" and I sure feel blessed today, both for a heated home and for the warmth of a dear friend's company. I hope you all who are in the frigid zones are keeping your toes warm.

Blessings,

Janet

Chain E-Mails

I know many of us have seen this one before, but with all the e-mails I am still receiving with warnings and promises connected to sending it on, well, I thought this might serve as a small reminder, and it's funny!

What We Celebrate
Posted On 12/23/2006 10:08:05

Two trees...
one to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, God come to earth Himself in human form for a purpose.
Another the symbol of that purpose..a sinless life given in our place on a rough wooden cross to save us from our sins.
Two trees...
one foreshadowing the other..both a celebration of God's love for each of us.
Yes, He came to die but HE LIVES..
and so we shall live in eternity with Him
if we accept His perfect sacrifice in our place.
Thank you, Jesus!

Wishing each of you a most blessed Christmas filled with the love of friends and family,
but most of all the knowledge of just how much God loves you!
May He be real to you in a new and marvelous way as we celebrate His coming!

All my love,

Janet

Problems on this Site?
Posted On 12/21/2006 23:21:43
For the last few days I have been having issues on MyBoomerPlace. I'm writing this to see if anyone else is also experiencing the same. This is not, that I am aware of, anything to do with any of our people here. It has to do with possible hacking.

To begin with, a couple of days ago, the site in general started to look strange to me. My "theme" I'd chosen for viewing the general pages of the site was no longer in place. Now most days I see a rather basic page with no color scheme and the format is very rudimentary.

Next, my personal page came up with an ad for some Indian (from India) hot jobs site tiled innumerable times across my page as the background. When I went to my settings page and opened the Design My Profile page, where the background image choice should be I could see a tiny image of this ad. When I tried to once again Browse and choose my background image, it would be replaced by this ad. Looking at the source code for my page at that time I found a lot of what seemed like hacker code in there. When I'd leave the background image blank, I'd be back to the blue background color I'd chosen when I first set up my page and which I never changed, and no image of the ad. When no image was chosen, the page code looked pretty normal (I'm not an expert on this), but would change back again to this code with hacker stuff included when I'd try to add any image and it reverted back to the Indian hot jobs ad.

Meanwhile I had contacted Admin and he was able to get an image of his choice (that flashing smiley face, if any of you happened to visit my page during that time) to "take" as a background image for my page. He said I could now put in whatever background image I liked, and it worked, for about a day.

Now, my background image has disappeared and I'm back to the blue only. When I once again open the Design My Profile page, there is some unknown (and too small to identify) image in the choice for background image. It has a pink color to it but it's not showing on my site as the background, only the solid blue. I tried this evening numerous times to Browse to the image I had had as my background image and every time I try to set it as my background, I get no change at all, just the blue background.

I've again contacted Admin on this, again with the source code from my page, which again has a bunch of junk in it, again obviously hacker code. I suppose he'll be able to help me again, but I'm not sure how long it will be before his work is messed up again.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced any of these problems here on MyBoomerPlace. I have never (and I have a MySpace and many other web pages and even some self-created websites for work purposes) had this problem before. I'm hoping this is not someone trying to destroy MyBoomerPlace's credibility or frustrate us as members so much that we just go elsewhere.

Another thing, though it may or may not be unrelated: I received an invitation not too many days before I began having the issues with my page, for a site called SeniorGrandCentral. It came as a message from someone I did not know here on Boomer and I wish I'd saved it but I deleted it from my inbox unfortunately. The message suggested that this other site is better and to try it out. I am very happy here on Boomer but, out of curiosity, I did go to that site and I signed up. It's still getting started, I think, because it's not very well put together. I definitely like MBP better. I mention all this because this invitation to the other site did come not long before I began having the problems with my page and MBP in general.

Anybody have any feedback to give on this? I can't imagine I'm alone here on this, but it would be good to know.

Janet

Memories Amidst The Mess
Posted On 12/16/2006 13:17:22
I lovingly handed my 31year old son the sheets of paper I’d found while going through things in my garage in an attempt to someday be able to put a car in there. “I found these in the garage,” I said. “They’re drawings you made of hills and rainbows.” He looked at them, his girlfriend peering over his shoulder. “Looks like I didn’t know how to write my name,” he said. “I missed a letter.”

After our family get-together was over and everyone had gone home, there sat those scraps of paper, still in my possession. Did I expect he’d take them home, cherishing them as much as I do, bits of him when he was small? Not realistic, I guess. Shall I throw them out and, in doing so, feel I’ve devaluated what he meant to me back then, and still does?

Ones children never quite realize that so much of what one saves over the years represents sweet and sometimes bittersweet times of ones life, tangible pieces of love, sorrow, joy-filled moments and difficulties. Like the box of years’ worth of greeting cards received, packed away in the basement, each one with penned sentiments, some in child-like scrawl, of love, appreciation and wishes for happiness and blessings, will anyone know or care of the value my “mess” holds when I can no longer be its guardian?

My car, forlornly parked at the curb instead of safely in the garage, has been hit now three times while sitting there. I swear I’ll whittle down this “mess” before I die so that my children will send me off with tears of sorrow and joy at my home going and not frustration and resentment at the monstrous task left to them.

I know I’m not the only one with what has now been classified as a “behavior” and, in extreme cases, a disorder. Hm, who said I had to “behave” and when did life ever have that much “order” about it? Maybe I’m just trying to keep together, held close to my heart, things, people, memories that time seems to want to pull from my physical, mental and emotional embrace.

I just noticed a poll that asks what one should do if someone requested to be added as a friend but doesn't leave comments. Personally, unless there is something about the person's profile or page that I feel reflects something very negative with which I feel it best not to be associated, I would never turn down a friend request. A "hand" offered in friendship is a gift. Possibly, though not able or inclined to be posting frequent comments, that someone just wishes to be able to read your bulletins which they've found meaningful. And the process of posting comments here on Boomer Place, at least so far, is anything but facilitated (though no less so than any social networking site that I've seen). Some virtually live here on the site, it seems. Others may have "a life", often with issues we may or may not be aware of, outside of the cyberworld. Are we tallying up comments as proof or assurance of the sincerity of each of our friends here? I hope not, as I, too, often do not get to posting a comment for each of my friends. I think this comment thing should be a nice feature but not taken so seriously. People here who are dealing with real life issues, health or personal, are often posting apologies and explanations for why they have not left comments for all their friends. Myself, I enjoy and appreciate each time someone cares to stop by my page and post some words or an interesting image, but do not count those who do not as any less than the rest. Bottom line, let's try to think of others more than ourselves. Would YOU want to be deleted as a friend if you were not posting comments?

I hope we can all just enjoy our time here, the strong friendships as well as the simple acquaintances we share.

Enjoy The Children
Posted On 12/07/2006 00:19:09
This is just too good not to pass on to all. Something absolutely positive for a change. I have repeatedly seen the breakdown of the cost of raising a child, but this is the first time I have seen the rewards listed this way. It's nice.

The government recently calculated the cost of raising a child from birth to 18 and came up with $160,140 for a middle income family. Talk about sticker shock! That doesn't even touch college tuition.

But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into:

* $8,896.66 a year,
* $741.38 a month, or
* $171.08 a week.
* That's a mere $24.24 a day!
* Just over a dollar an hour.

Still, you might think the best financial advice is don't have children if you want to be "rich." Actually, it is just the opposite.

What do you get for your $160,140?:

* Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
* Glimpses of God every day.
* Giggles under the covers every night.
* More love than your heart can hold.
* Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
* Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
* A hand to hold, usually covered with jelly or chocolate.
* A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites
* Someone to laugh yourself silly with, no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.

For $160,140, you never have to grow up. You get to:

* finger-paint,
* carve pumpkins,
* play hide-and-seek,
* catch lightning bugs, and
* never stop believing in Santa Claus.

You have an excuse to:

* keep reading the Adventures of Piglet and Pooh,
* watch Saturday morning cartoons,
* go to Disney movies, and
* wish on stars.
* You get to frame rainbows, hearts, and flowers under refrigerator magnets and collect spray painted noodle wreaths for Christmas, hand prints set in clay or Mother's Day, and cards with backward letters for Father's Day.

For $160,140, there is no greater bang for your buck. You get to be a hero just for:

* retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof,
* taking the training wheels off a bike,
* removing a splinter,
* filling a wading pool,
* coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.

You get a front row seat to history to witness the:

* first step,
* first word,
* first bra,
* first date, and
* first time behind the wheel.

You get to be immortal. You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren and great grandchildren.
You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.

In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there under God. You have all the power to heal a boo-boo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits,

So one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost.
That is quite a deal for the price!!!!!!!

Love & enjoy your children & grandchildren!!!!!!!
