Immigration situation in America
Posted On 01/27/2007 22:32:05
This is a difficult topic for many Americans. Heated debates can be had. Part of this is because people can get emotional about point of view or side. Can you tell someone that they don't feel that way? Of course, you can't. You feel what you feel. No one can win an arguement of emotion versus reason or viceversa. They are two different things and many times they are very connected in most people. Try telling someone not to be passionate about their point of view.

Each of us has a "mindset." This is useful because it determine how we see the world. Every mindset is incomplete. You can't know everything. Do you know why bad things happen to good people? The world used to think that the sun revolved around the earth and that the earth was the center of the universe. Galileo changed that but that was not easy for people to accept.

Your mindset can and does change. It is like remodeling a house. Everyone may lives in a house but the insides of it are very different. The physical appearance of house may look the same but the inside or the "intellect" of each person is different.

It seems America is almost equally divided into all the different points of view. Export all illegal immigrants - all approximately 12 million? Let them all stay, they are beneficial to America because they for the most part perform jobs, America does not want to do? We need to be compassionate about how we handle them becuase it is not a "big" problem? They are a "big" problem and they affect unemployment rate of America because they take jobs away from Americans? Fine and have sanctions against coprorations and companies that use illegal immmigrants? Build 15 foot walls around our borders (like CA, AZ & TX) to keep them out? Don't build fences because it won't stop or won't help the problem - it sends the wrong message to the world? Amenesty? No amensty because we did that already during the Regan period.

Honestly, I see this as a no-win situation. A good compromise is when no one side is happy with the results. If this happens, all Americans will be unhappy because Americans did not get what they wanted. Will politicans lead the way and be leaders? They did here locally with the Wright Amendment compromise. That fight has been going on for years about restrict air travel to Love Field. SouthWest, American Airlines , the city of Dallas and city of Ft. Worth all made a compromise. Still congressmen are debating the merits of it because it does not help their side or point of view of getting cheaper fares to Dallas faster than they want - their particular state.

This immigration situation is a bigger powder keg. Selecting one point of view maybe the reason politicians get re-elected , elected or not. How many politicians are ready to do the "right thing" for everyone even if it is unpopluar and means they do not have job at the next election? I doubt there are any that would say I don't care, this is the right thing for all of us to do.

We get back to the "mindset." How easy is that to change? Well first is the understanding that you have one; a mindest. Typically, like most college students, I was more liberal than I am today. My "mindset" changed over time. It changed again when I became a Catholic. My parents were Buddhist.

I feel this will situation will be with us for a long time. It is similar to the race relations in this country. How long has that be going on? It seems forever. Can we all agree we all have a mindset? Can we agree we have a mindest that is incomplete? That is the start of possible change.
