Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Posted On 06/25/2007 05:00:56

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)

What is a TIA or transient ischemic attack?

A TIA is a "warning stroke" or "mini-stroke" that produces stroke-like symptoms but no lasting damage. Recognizing and treating TIAs can reduce your risk of a major stroke.

Most strokes aren't preceded by TIAs. However, of the people who've had one or more TIAs, more than a third will later have a stroke. In fact, a person who's had one or more TIAs is more likely to have a stroke than someone of the same age and sex who hasn't.

TIAs are important in predicting if a stroke will occur rather than when one will happen. They can occur days, weeks or even months before a major stroke. In about half the cases, the stroke occurs within one year of the TIA.

What causes a transient ischemic attack?

TIAs occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery, and part of the brain doesn't get the blood it needs. The symptoms occur rapidly and last a relatively short time. Most TIAs last less than five minutes. The average is about a minute. Unlike stroke, when a TIA is over, there's no injury to the brain.

What are the symptoms of a TIA?

It's very important to recognize the warning signs of a TIA or stroke. The usual TIA symptoms are the same as those of stroke, only temporary:

Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
The short duration of these symptoms and lack of permanent brain injury is the main difference between TIA and stroke.

TIAs are extremely important predictors of stroke. Don't ignore them! If symptoms appear, CALL 9-1-1 TO GET MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY. A doctor should determine if a TIA or stroke has occurred, or if it's another medical problem with similar symptoms. Some examples are seizure, fainting, migraine headache, or general medical or cardiac condition. Prompt medical or surgical attention to these symptoms could prevent a fatal or disabling stroke from occurring.

For stroke information, call the American Stroke Association at 1-888-4-STROKE.

I had a TIA a couple of weeks ago, wasnt the first time that was three years ago followed by a stroke. the thing is this time I havent gotten all my strenght back. My emotions are all over the place. So now I have to work hard at getting bme back again. I cry alot, its all part of the process but this time I am fighting alone.I am angry,& I dont like being that way.I fell Iam not the best of company for any one and hate that I am not. Have thought of leaving Boomers for a while till I get back to being alot more postive.
I care deeply for my friends here & You make me smile & even laugh. I dont choose to bring you down.Theres enought gloom & doom in the world but there are so many more things that are beautiful.Things that bring joy & happiness things that you are in total awe of.You are all beautiful each in your own way.

Make Video Phone Calls for Free
By Susan Ayers Walker
My daughter is attending college in Florida, and I live in California, but we get to see each other several times a week. Thanks to VoIP software on our computers and inexpensive webcams, we can enjoy face-to-face visits whenever we want.
Voice-over-Internet Protocol, better known as VoIP, has been around for a while. Now that more people are using high-speed DSL or cable modems, many companies are offering free VoIP access on the Internet with many calling and messaging options to choose from. VoIP converts the telephone's analog audio signals (your phone conversation) into digital signals that can be transmitted over the internet. This revolutionary technology has grown in popularity because it enables you to make free phone calls using your computer.
Since a VoIP phone call is computer-to-computer, it also requires you to have a sound card, speakers and a microphone on your computer. Most new computers include all these features in their standard package, so you may not need to buy any additional hardware. You will also need a fast Internet connection, preferably DSL or cable. A dialup connection is not well suited to providing high-quality VoIP â€" the sound quality isn't as good as DSL or cable and video isn't even worth trying.
For free computer-to-computer calling, both parties need to use the same brand of VoIP software. Many VoIP companies offer their software for free. Search the Internet for “video phone calls” or ask those you know who are using VoIP which software they're using. If you use instant messaging software, check if they have a video chat capability you can enable.
Quick Reference
Apple's iChat AV
Skype
My daughter and I use Skype, a popular free service whose software can be downloaded and setup in just a few minutes. After creating a buddy on your buddy list you can make your first call. You can also use the Internet to search for inexpensive webcams. My daughter prefers the microphone that came with her computer but I like to wear a headset/microphone combination. Both my webcam and microphone plug into USB ports.
Making a video call is simple, just like in instant messaging. The Skype menu allows me to see when my daughter is on-line. I click on her name and the software “rings” her computer. When we are both connected, the software will trigger our webcams to start. The video starts in a small window, but I have the option to expand it to full screen. My face remains visible in a small window so I know where my camera is pointing as we chat.
For Apple users, Apple's iChat AV is very popular, but to be successful with video calls on a Mac you need to be running the latest OS X. iChat AV offers additional features such as having a video call with up to three people.
Video chatting is growing in popularity, and it's certainly a pleasant way to visit and chat with friends and family who live some distance away. As with my daughter and me, it helps to reinforce our loving bond although many miles and states separate us.

How do I say Good bye
Posted On 04/30/2007 09:16:53
Tomorrow is Nolans Birthday, he would have been 15.Iwanted to write somethin honoring his memory.

How do I start this poem?
Because no matter what I write
It's not going to change a thing,
Words cant bring you back
Neither can tears,
The aching in my heart feeds off every beat
Every memory now a painful burden
Since you were taken, life just ain't no fun
Remembering you is just too hard
Past flash backs of the times we shared
Everyday...when you always cared,
There's a void in my life now
That just cant be filled
Days seem like months as time stands still
Remembering the day death did come
I wanna say I'm sorry...I never said goodbye
This is the best that I could ever do
words on paper written just for you,
For every second that your gone
I wish I could give you back an hour,
For every drop of tear I shed
I'll always remember the pain you bled,
And every smile I manage to crack
I'll feel your presence looking back,
Even though we've been separated by life
You'll always be inside of me
The time will come when we shall meet again
Until then I'll have to live with this pain,
sweet dreams my dear son
Close your eyes and rest now
I still love you even though you left
So finish your journey to the castle in the sky
Now that Ive said my final goodbye.

Love Alive or Dead ?
Posted On 04/30/2007 02:58:07
Time to ride the wave
outside our quaking heads.
Let it rip,
reveal the real deal,
we are still not dead.

But how can this be?
How can we be free
in the mire of lies and fear?
‘Less we take the reigns,
call the demons by name,
turn illusion on its ear.

Lies all lies we breathe them,
exhale them in our beds.
We may still be breathing,
our chests strongly beating,
but ‘til we can love
unbridled, unplugged,
value, embrace
our frail human raceâ€"
Are we truly alive or dead?

SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED
Posted On 04/19/2007 03:28:06
SOMETHING QUITE UNEXPECTED HAS HAPPENED. IT CAME THIS MORNING EARLY.FOR VARIOUS REASONS,NOT IN THEMSELVES AT ALL MYSTERIOUS, MY HEART WAS LIGHTER THAN IT HAD BEEN FOR MANY WEEKS... AND SUDDENLY,AT THE VERY MOMENT WHEN, SO FAR, I MOURNED NOLAN LEAST, I REMEMBERED HIS BEST.INDEED IT WAS SOMETHING (ALMOST) BETTER THAN MEMORY; AN INSTANTANTANEOUS, UNANSWERABLE IMPRESSION.TO SAY IT WAS LIKE A MEETING WOULD BE GOING TOO FAR. YET THERE WAS THAT IN WHICH TEMPTS ONE TO USE THOSE WORDS.IT WAS THOUGH THE LIFTING OF THE SORROW REMOVED A BARRIER.

SOMETIMES WE ARE UNCONSCIOUSLY FEARFUL THAT IF WE BEGIN TO MOVE AWAY FROM GRIEF,WE WILL LOSE WHAT CONTACT WE HAVE WITH THE ONE WE MISS SO MUCH. BUT MAYBE IT IS LIKE LETTING GO OF ONE'S CHILDREN WHEN THEY ARE READY TO MOVE OFF ON THEIR OWN.IF WE LOSSEN OUR GRIP,THE CHANCES OF THEIR RETURNING ARE MUCH GREATER,AND IN WAYS THAT ARE COMMENSURATED WITH WHO THEY ARE NOW.PERHAPS THE RELINQUISHING OF OUR MOST INTENSE GRIEF MAKES A SPACE INTO WHICH A NEW RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LOVED ONE CAN MOVE. IT IS THE PERSON, AFTER ALL, WHOM WE WANT, NOT THE GRIEF.

MAY I HOLD MY GRIEF LIGHTLY IN MY HAND SO IT CAN LIFT AWAY FROM ME.MY CONNECTION TO THE ONE I HAVE LOST IS INVIOLATE; IT CANNOT BE BROKEN.

You Learn
Posted On 02/18/2007 05:34:48

After a while you learn the suble diffrence between holding a hand and chaining a soul and you learn that love doesnt always mean security. And you begin to learn that kissses are'nt contracts and presents are'nt promises and you begin to acept your defeats with your head up and your eyes ahead with the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child. And you learn to build your roads on today because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain, for plans and future's have a way of fallling down in mid flight. After a while you learn sunshine burns if you get too much.So you plant your garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone else to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure that you really are strong and you really have worth and you learn with every goodbye you learn...

HOPE
Posted On 01/14/2007 04:46:51
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings thr tune without words
And never stops at all.
~~~Emily Dickinson
Sometimes we know hope as much by its absence as by its presence. When we're depressed, hope seems almost unknowable, a total illusion. We fell inwardly flattened, unable to move, or as if we are just going thur the motions.The song of hope of which the poet speaks is muted.Yet the will of the sprit,as well as of the body, is fo life, even for zestful life. Then something happens~~~a friend calls and we mobilize ourselves, making an effort to be useful, to ourselves or to someone else. The energy quickens. At least the moment has some meaning again and that persistent note of hope, without which we cannot live, starts thrumming in our minds once more.
Sometimes all I can hope for is that I'll fell more hopeful tomorow.
