No one knew how old the Green Man was. It seems that he had always been around. I remember my Grandfather had told me stories of the Green Man, when I was just a boy, and his Grandfather before him, and his before him, back through the generations. No one knew how far back.
He lived in a valley at the foot of the mountain, and people didn't see much of him. They didn't often seek him out either. He was strange. Strange, but kindly. Mostly people saw him in the Winter. That was when he would show up in the village hauling his long wagon full of fresh vegetables and fruit, which he gave away to everybody.
He must have been very strong to haul that long wagon by himself through the snow, but for him it seemed a natural thing. When asked why he didn't have a horse or oxen to haul his wagon, he replied, "Now why would I make one of God's creatures do for me, what I can do so easily for myself?"
