Era una antigua ciudad luvita situada en la costa occidental de Anatolia, a tres kilómetros al suroeste del distrito de Selçuk de la actual provincia de Izmir. La ciudad mantuvo su importancia durante los períodos jónico y romano posterior, con el comienzo del colonialismo griego en Anatolia. Su fundación se remonta al Neolítico, es decir, alrededor del 6000 a.C. Fue construido por colonos griegos áticos y jónicos en el siglo X a.
