WRITTEN FOR BFF #73
GUILTY PLEASURES
I consider myself extremely lucky, in that I have
"guilty pleasures" ~ in a number of different categories…
FOOD:

I love cake. I loved cake when I was little, loved it
Growing up, love it now and predict that I will
Continue loving it to the day my hand shakes while
I am "forking" it into my eager mouth.
I grew up with a mom who was THE #1 BEST BAKER
(In the world)…she could make any kind of cake, pie,
Torte, cookie etc. from scratch. Our house always
Had some sort of "sweet" aroma wafting…not only on
The holidays but every other day as well.
There were fruitcakes with delicious crumbles, peach,
And blueberry pies, Fass-nacht donuts, marbled pound
Cakes, custom made butter-cream birthday cakes and at
Christmas "Stollen" (the European ancestor of American
Fruitcake that tastes nothing like fruitcake but IS a
Buttery sweet holiday delight. Cookies at Christmas were
Baked by the trunkful and …I have a sweet tooth for
Cake that will never quit.
We used to have cake for breakfast (I know nowdays that
Is not considered healthy) but we never left home for
School with empty stomachs .
PETS:

I indulge the doggie I have now…he is my friend through
Thick and thin, sickness and health, for richer or poorer
And he never…ever…makes me feel bad. Unconditional
Love is HIS specialty and mine is …spoiling him.
I am not even ashamed to say that I sometimes love my
Ollie more than the people that are around me…he is
A guilty pleasure that just keeps on giving .
HOBBIES:

Photography ~ could be my "life" if only someone would
Pay me to take pictures. I absolutely love, love , love
Going off by myself and taking pictures…I have been known
To get lost for hours and totally loose track of anything
Else on my schedule. Photographs are to me…a chronicle of
History (my own and the rest of the worlds') and when I am
Photographing…I focus totally and immerse myself in the
Subjects my camera (and I behind the lens) are seeing. I find
That with the camera in my hand…I experience things more
Totally than I would without…I notice things like details of shade
And light, how many spots the Giraffe has on his ears, the color of
A little girls' eyes when I take her portrait…the angle of a building
And the reflections in the glass…the different hues in a lake
On a clear day when the sky and clouds are reflected in it.
I relive special moments and memories through my pictures and
My greatest joy is taking pictures for other people and presenting them
With an album or a scrapbook of their "special event".
The reason this is a "guilty pleasure" is because (if I let it) it takes
Up a lot of my time…housework goes undone, groceries are not
Shopped for ~ dinners not started ~ and well…other stuff is sort of
In a "holding pattern" till I put the camera down. It also costs money
To print out the pics…paper…ink…etc. that could be better spent
On other things…but it brings me such joy…that I indulge whenever
I am able.
WRITING :

This "guilty pleasure" goes hand-in –hand with taking pictures.
When I sit down and write…the world around me disappears and I
Simply "step upstairs" into my head and travel wherever the muse
Takes me…I forget everything else and by the time I am done ~
Day has (often) turned to night and there are grumpy and hungry
Folk milling about me and pets that are frantic that their dinner has
Been forgotten. I feel such a rush when I write that I try to do it as
Often as I can…often just a little guilty that my "laundry day" has
Turned into my "blog writing day"…I even write at work sometimes
And am resentful when I must put down my pen or pencil to attend to
Some "nuisance" that I am actually being "paid" to do.
CLOTHING:

Socks, warm and the fuzzier the better…guilty pleasure I cannot and
Get enough of, also warm flannel pajama pants (the crazier, the better).
I have a pair my sister gave me for Christmas, they are black and have
Brown bears and red snow shoes on them ~ drawstring with pockets ~
I LOVE those pants! Worn sweatshirts…(distressed ~ I believe they call them ~
Like worn jeans…love those too) and T shirts soft from too many
Washings. The "guilt" enters in when I purchase too many of these ~ and
Sadly remind myself that "less" is more and I really DON'T need one in
EVERY color that I like.
Comfy slippers and winter boots, comfy flip-flops…Hell ~ comfy ANYTHING!
HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS:

Seventh Generation Lavender & Eucalyptus detergent and softner…
Costs a little more but it makes my clothes smell like a dream ~ I
Find it hard to wash my stuff with anything else.
Aveeno skin products ~

Are wonderful for your skin…I may have to wean myself off them since the
"positively radiant face lotion"…small size…has now jumped to $18.99 a bottle!?!?
COFFEE:

Have always been a coffee-drinker. My mom raised my sister and me on
Half coffee and half milk with 2 teaspoons of sugar….as we got older the
Coffee/milk ratio changed and I have always sought out "good" coffee.
I love Starbucks ~ had Gevalia shipped to my house for years and am now
A "Keurig k-cup" connoisseur. I LOVE that machine that produces the perfect
Cup of Chai latte, coffee (pumpkin spice is my seasonal favorite), Earl Gray
Tea and Hot chocolate…each and every time!
FLOWERS:

I can't afford it all the time ~ but buying myself fresh cut flowers ~ especially
In Winter (when the garden is bare) makes me feel like a Queen!
Guilty pleasure , I suppose, because they are not "needed" but just so very
Much appreciated…when they are on my table.
So I guess the definition (for me) of guilty pleasures is just stuff I don't need ~
But pretty much convince myself to buy (for myself) because having it makes
Me feel special and wonderful. On that note ~ A delicious Marguerita is also
A "guilty pleasure", as is a bottle of Saranac "pumkin ale" and a good glass of
Riesling wine, Lindt chocolate truffles, Godiva chocolates…on and on.
We deserve these "guilty pleasures" because they bring "joy" to our hungry
Souls…and as long as our indulgences don't hurt anyone else…and make our
Lives a little brighter…I am all for partaking…

CHEERS…A TOAST TO US!
