It was a hot summer day, we were in the backyard playing with my granddaughter when my son, Vince kicked the large ball in the air, it bounced off Verona’s head and landed in the neighbor's yard. My granddaughter laughed and my son sheepishly asked if I would go get the ball since he did not have shoes on. As I walked over to the neighbors, a shiver came up my spine I shrugged it off as just a summer chill from being in the sun too long. The ball was between the garage and the fence there was debris piled between the ball and me. I tried to move the plastic garbage can and I found it would not budge. There were carpet remnants piled high on both sides of the garage. I finally made my way around the debris and walked through the tall-unmowed grass, which led me behind the garage. Surprisingly the path was clear from here to where the ball was. Once I got back to my son’s yard, I joked that the garbage can probably have a dead body in it. Vince laughed and said ‘We would smell decomp from a dead body mom.†his forehead wrinkled as he shook his head at my silly remark.
I said: “Maybe not, it may have been placed there in the winter and slowly deteriorated over time, with the warming of the sun and cooling of the air.â€
We laughed and continued to play with Verona.
I could not sleep thinking about the garbage can. I waited until the house went silent. I grabbed bottled water and went outside on the patio. I sat and waited until the lights went out next door. After an hour, I made my way over to the neighbor’s garage. Just as I reached for the lid, I heard a conspiratorial whispered voice call: “Mom! What are you doing?â€
I nearly jumped out of my skin. I shushed him and flailed my arms in a shooing motion. I whispered: “I thought you went to bed?â€
He said: “I could not stop thinking about the garbage can.â€
I nodded and reached again for the lid. Again, I heard a whispered voice: “What are you guys doing?â€
This time I did not jump, my heart was pumping and I could feel sweat trickling down my back. I lifted the lid. Clicked on my flashlight to illuminate the contents of the can, I gasped and choked out: “I see hair and goo.â€
I slammed the lid down and ran as fast I could back to my son’s patio. Vince said: “You should have taken a photo.â€
I was shaking and nauseous from the experience. My daughter-in-law Vickie said: “Go over and take a photo.†Vince grimaced as though to say, “are you kidding me†She gave him a stern look and he reluctantly jumped over the fence took a quick photo and as he was jumping back over to our side his foot caught on the fence and he fell face down into the petunias.
We all went into the house, we each grabbed something stronger than water to drink. My hands were shaking so hard Vice poured the Jack Daniels into my Pepsi. We all took deep breaths to calm ourselves not saying a word. I started to laugh because our deep breaths sounded like heavy breathing and the laughter helped break the tension.
I asked no one in particular: “Now what?â€
Vicki and I said unanimously “Vince you should call the police.†He looked at us with a look of desperation hoping we had a better idea. Since none of us could come up with a better idea, he called the sheriff’s department.
They arrived within the hour. Each in our turn explained the events of the day. I could tell by the look on their faces they were not too pleased with our renditions. They could not help but notice the bottle of Jack Daniels and the fact we each had a full glass in our hands.
I said: “I know you are probably thinking we have been partying and this is a contrived scenario, but I assure you there looks to be human remains in that garbage can. My son has a photo.â€
That finally got their attention with the photo they had probable cause of a crime. They walked over to the neighbor’s house. One of the officers was on his phone talking to someone while the other walked over to the garbage can. The officer opened the lid and shined his Mag-Lite into the open can. He looked up at his partner with a nod.
His partner said into his phone: “Yes sir, there does seem to be human remains.â€
He turned to his partner and said: “They are sending a detective don’t touch anything.â€
A light went on in the kitchen and I pointed that out to the two officers. My son and I settled into chairs on the patio sipping our drinks. My Vicki went back to bed, knowing she will be up early with the girls.
The guy who lives there came out on the back stoop and asked: “What are you doing on my property?â€
The officer told him about the events that led up to them arriving. As he was speaking to the owner whose name is Mitchel, the detective showed up as well as the counties equivalent of a CSI. One of the officers told Mitchel to sit on the stoop with his hands behind his back. One of the police officers read Mitchel his rights and he complied with the officer’s commands. All the while Mitchel was glaring at us.
I tried not to look over at what was going on. Hoping if I keep my attention straight ahead, I could at least pick up nuggets of the multiple conversations. I heard one of the investigators say: “It is a female.â€
They took photos, placed down placards highlighting where each photo was taken. When they left, Mitchel was in the back of the sheriff’s car. I looked at my Vince and said: “I have had enough excitement for one day. I will see you in the morning.â€
I slept in hoping the Jack Daniels did not kick me in the morning. When I finally shook the grogginess from my brain, I made it upstairs for a cup of coffee. Vince was out on the front sidewalk talking to a police officer. Vicki and I were trying to peek through the blinds in hopes of picking up a morsel of information. No such luck we had to wait until my Vince came inside.
When Vince came back into the house Vicki and I were having breakfast with Verona and Vera. Vera had placed most of her oatmeal on her face and in her hair. Verona was laughing at her, which only made Vera smear the cereal more. The chortles were interrupted by my question: “Vince, what did the police say?â€
As Vince stood just inside the door, he looked pale verging on throwing up.
He said: “The body in the garbage can was an elderly woman.†(he paused just enough to let me know I could be next) I smiled as he continued, “There was one more body rolled up into the carpet on the lawn.â€
I looked over at Vickie, she was staring at Vince in disbelief. Vickie got up abruptly and ran into the bathroom. I could hear her throwing up. My stomach did not feel all that well either but I pressed on with my questioning. “Did Mitchel give any information in regards to who these people were?â€
Vince said: “The police didn’t say, he just asked me if I saw anything else that could help. I said, no. I told him in the winter we hibernate and rarely even look out the window.â€
I decided to stay a couple of extra days in part to help with the girls, but mostly because I am nosy.
We spent most of the day outside trying not to glance over at the crime scene where the yellow tape was flapping in the wind. After the girls went to bed we sat out on the patio with a glass of wine.
Vince was the first to see the car lights pull into the driveway and then disappear. I ran into the house right behind Vince, Vickie was on my heels. I took the stairs leading into the basement two at a time. I grabbed my gun from its hiding place in the back of the washing machine. I ran back up the stairs only to be greeted by Vince as he had his handgun in his waistband. He looked at me and said: “What the hell!â€
My voice was shaking when I said: “Granny is packing and she knows how to use it.â€
Vince shook his head, his forehead was furrowed, and we both leaned forward as we heard footsteps coming up the driveway. Vince waved me back down the stairs; Vickie came with me holding sleeping Vera in her arms and Verona by the hand. We went into the laundry room. I closed the door and told Vickie to stay over by the dryer. I tried to control my breathing and waited.
We could hear male voices but could not make out what was being said, footfalls coming down the stairs quickened my heartbeat and sweat.
Finally, Vince said: “You can come out now. Detective Sorenson wants to speak to mom.â€
Vickie blinked and asked me: “You know a Detective Sorenson?â€
I said: “I know a Mike Sorenson.â€
Vickie put the girls back to bed as Vince and I joined Mike outside on the patio. Mike had a beer in his hand. Mike stood up as soon as he saw me. He pulled a chair next to where he was sitting and motioned for me to sit. I complied.
Mike smiled shook his head and said: “So, fancy meeting you here.â€
I did not say anything I just looked at him with my best poker face. I had met Mike at a backyard barbeque two weeks ago; there was no mention of the fact that he was a detective on the sheriff’s department. My silence was to express that he needed to explain himself. Especially since he had his way with me.
He said: “I don’t normally advertise what I do for a living when I am at a neighborhood get together.â€
I said: “Ah†“Ahemâ€
He whispered: “Hey, I called the next day. As I remember it we both enjoyed ourselves and I hope we are still on for dinner tomorrow night.â€
I said: “Depends what you want right now in your official capacity.â€
He smiled and said: “I thought that you would want to know what we found out about Vince’s neighbor.â€
By this time Vickie had joined us and Mike filled us in.
Mitchel’s attorney showed up with Mitchel’s side of the events hoping for a plea deal, which he received. He is being charged with 2 counts of displacing a deceased person.
The autopsy did not conclusively show foul play. The man and woman were above the age of 60. Mitchel said they were his parents who died in their sleep. When Mitchel was asked why he did not give them a proper funeral? He said it was because they were not worth the cost. The judge has held Mitchel over for psychiatric evaluation.
