For over 5 years, I had worked as a bookkeeper for a transportation/logistics company. Well last Monday the "axe fell" for everyone. We were all summoned to the breakroom, informed that the company would be closing, and that Wednesday, October 22nd, would be our final working day. One of the reasons given was that it was just becoming increasingly difficult to remain in business with today's high fuel costs. (While fuel prices have been coming down in the last few weeks, the owner stated that he has seen this before and it just doesn't seem to last. Sadly my coworkers and I all had to agree.) While this was a major blow to all of us, it was certainly no big surprise as we had all been seeing warning signs for the last six months. On our last day we completed our shifts, wished each other the best of luck, and then went our seperate ways all vowing to stay in touch.
Early Thursday morning I started my search for a new job. I decided to take an old fashioned approach by looking in the yellow pages and making some phone calls. (This way I wouldn't be wasting gas if any of the companies told me to apply online via their websites.) Well the tenth place that I contacted, (a moving and storage company which just happens to be less than one mile from my apartment), told me they had an opening for a bookkeeper/inventory clerk and that I would be more than welcome to fill out an application/submit a resume either online or in person. I chose to go with the in person approach as I had this feeling that having a face with my application/resume would drastically increase my chances of getting an interview. By 11:00 AM the deed was done, I kindly thanked them for their time, and left.
At around 3:00 P.M. I received a call from the manager. He had looked over my resume/application, said that he was very impressed with what he saw, and asked me to come in the next morning at 9:00 A.M. for an interview! Well the interview went great and I was asked to consent to a background check as well as a drug test early Friday afternoon. I was then informed that I would be contacted for a second interview in a few days if all the results came back favorably. Yesterday I received a phone call and the second interview was scheduled for 9:00 A.M. this morning.
Great News!! I start on Monday! While the starting pay is a little less than my previous job, I am so relieved that I was able to find something else so soon. Some of my friends have been through this and let me tell you they didn't find anything for almost 6 months. So even in these troubled times there are companies that are hiring so don't give up.
