Life and My Girl Belle
Posted On 09/11/2021 08:17:53

I am new to MyBoomerPlace, and I just wanted to say something about a small bulldog named Belle. She had been hit by a car and had a broken leg, some bad cuts, and some broken teeth. Her owner at that time did not take her to the Vet and chained her up in his backyard. He wanted to shoot her; I found out about it and rescued her.

I took her to the Vet and was told it was to late to save her leg. I had her leg amputated and finally got to bring her home. I had already fallen in love with her and willingly helped her through her recovery. After that we were inseparable.

At the time my wife, Dreama, and I lived in a small town in Tennessee. We decided to move to Arizona to retire and be near my mother. I was married to Dreama for forty years. I always joked with her that she had stolen me young. She was the love of my life, I couldn't imagine life without her. She developed a heart condition and the doctors recommended surgery. She passed away during that surgery, and my life was forever changed.

I was ready to give up, but a little bulldog named Belle wouldn't let me. Some people don't believe in God, but I do. What are the odds of saving Belle's life, and in return she saved mine? I don't think thats luck or chance.

For the last two years Belle had been my constant companion. She went everywhere with me, to the store, to the VA clinic, in my lap in the recliner, and even on the bed when I was sleeping. The only time she took a break from me was to go outside with my two elderly dogs, Shemp and DeeBee. They are brother and sister, and both are large dogs that need a little help getting around. Belle watched over them and had run off some coyotes on more than one occasion.

In Mar. 2021, Belle had a cyst removed which turned out to be cancer, it came back with a vengeance. I tried everything to save her, but it was not to be. I had her put down in August when her tumor ruptured. It broke my heart all over again.

I have her buried in the back yard where I can see the grave from my window. As my wife was a Catholic, I took one of her Rosaries and put in on Belle's new pink collar. I wrapped her in a blanket, kissed her goodbye, and said a final prayer.

The only consolation I have is knowing Dreama welcomed her home. Never take anything for granted, tell the ones you love that you love them. Life can change fast. That's part of the reason I'm here on this site. Most boomer's can understand what I've been through, and many have dealt with much worse.

Y'all take care
