There, but for the Grace of God
Posted On 08/02/2007 03:43:41
Our hearts and prayers go to all those affected by today's (August 1, 2007) tragedy in Minneapolis-St Paul. When you least expect it, life can make a shattering change. May we all be a little more loving, caring, kind and thankful for the little time we do have.

Keep Your Computer Updated
Posted On 07/30/2007 02:45:47
I spotted this in one of the many newsletter e-mails I get. Even though it's kinda geeky, I post it as a reminder to keep your computer current on all security updates. Especially if you use Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer. Other browsers may not be as virus/worm prone, but they need updating too.

MySpace Worm Uses Fast-Flux to Dodge Detection

07/30/2007 - eWEEK - In late June, some MySpace user pages were seeded with malware designed to exploit one of three recently patched security holes in Windows and Internet Explorer. The exploit started with a Flash movie installed on multiple compromised MySpace pages that led users to a spoofed MySpace log-in page. That log-in page hosted a number of exploits that downloaded malware and tried to snatch visitors' MySpace credentials.

I am pretty sure this has not and will not be a problem here at MyBoomerPlace.

As for me... I automatically run a software update every night. I also run a virus update and scan every night.

Just takin' care of my Boomer buddies!

Are You Ready for HDTV?
Posted On 07/26/2007 08:25:10
WARNING! THE END IS NEAR!

:dizzy: On Feb. 18, 2009, tens of millions of televisions that are not equipped to receive digital signals will almost become useless. Basically, the type signal the TV stations broadcast will change from analog (the type signal you get now) to digital. This means if you do not have a digital receiver or converter... no TV! Cable and satellite subscribers with analog TVs should contact their service providers about obtaining converter boxes for the DTV transition. A recent poll indicated 61 percent of respondents had "no idea" the digital transition was going to take place.

Uncle Sam to the rescue... Starting in January 2008, the U.S. government will make available coupons worth $40 that can be used to buy two converter boxes.

The digital transition, once complete, will provide better sound and sharper signals to television watchers.

When you get a chance, check out the MyBoomerPlace polls and let us know what you are going to do!

Are We Supposed To Feel Sorry?

Is it just me, or would you think the ineffectiveness of one of these stories might affect the other...

Exxon Mobil Sends Man 2,000 Credit Cards
NEW YORK - Frank Van Buren ordered two copies of his Exxon card because it was expiring. He got the cards he requested - and then got two boxes with 1,000 cards each. Van Buren said it took hours to shred the cards.

Exxon Mobil Profit Falls to $10.26B
HOUSTON - Exxon Mobil Corp., said its second-quarter profit fell 1 percent from a year ago. The latest profit compared with earnings of $10.36 billion in the second quarter of 2006. That's more than any company in history.

I wonder if the executives at Exxon Mobil are thinking "Looks like I'll have to cut back on the number of items I'm going to buy at Super Wal-Mart this weekend."?

Probably not.

Study: Obesity is Socially Contagious
Posted On 07/25/2007 09:40:00
Okay... does this mean tomorrow, at work, I can call in FAT?!

Study: Obesity is Socially Contagious
Jeanna Bryner, LiveScience.com

A new study finds that when the scale reads "obese" for one individual, the odds that their friends will become obese increase by more than 50 percent.

The study, published in the July 26 (2007) issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that obesity is "socially contagious," as it can spread among individuals in close social circles. The likely explanation: A person's idea of what is an appropriate body size is affected by the size of his or her friends.

Conversely, the researchers found that thinness is also contagious.

Or, does this mean I have to start hanging out with Paris Hilton and Kate Moss?

Average Joes Blog

I'm fairly new here at MyBoomerPlace. I've been eyeing the blog section and wondering what I might write. I knew I didn't want a typical rant column, there is already enough of those. And besides... that's what we do in the politics group.

I started thinking it might be fun to post my responses to news articles I find. I'll edit the info down to present the basic idea and throw in a wisea** or sarcastic comment. Hopefully something humorous. Maybe something thought provoking.

I guess only time will tell how successful I will be.
