I was just returning to my apartment from an evening walk, and as I neared my apartment, a passenger jet left Kent County Airport and I watched as it passed by overhead, as I've always had an interest in planes.
My eye caught an object that seemed to be silently, slowly floating in the light breeze, from about the one o'clock position. The sky was clear blue, and I could not determine how high or large it was, as there was no reference point.
I had immediately thought of large pieces of ash in the sky after a large fire in Grand Rapids, a few years ago. But this had an angular shape. As I watched it, I tried to decide what it was.
I could tell it was triangular, had no wings, did not roll in the sky, turn, or wobble. It looked like a burnished, mottled, black as the sun hit the right side, to the west, and the center left side was black, like it had a ridge or keel in the middle that shaded the east (left) half of the bottom.
The pointed end was directed away from me, and the object moved in a direction 45 degrees to its alignment. The rear end did not seem flat or rectangular. The best description of it, was that it looked like a broadhead, hunting arrow tip.
I probably wouldn't have thought a lot about it, except as I was about to turn away and continue inside, the object suddenly shot out of sight past some tall trees to the east of me.
It didn't just disappear, it was like shot out of a gun in the direction it had been pointed, not in the direction it had coasted by, probably directly over the airport.
I was sorry afterwards that I didn't take a picture of the object with my phone camera, but although I could not ID it after careful observation, it didn't seem significant, until it shot out of sight.
That made a real impression on me.
I did make a sketch of it immediately and checked WOOD-TV's website for the wind direction/speed at the time. Supposedly 10 mph from NW, which was perpendicular to the object's drift, as it was passing slowly to the NE.
I did not include the sketch, but could if someone wished one.
