Aug 30 The search of eternal youth is often confused with the fruitless attempt to seek immortality. That's not to say crazy efforts had not been exercised by some for that impossible aim. The magazine 'Science' had published the result of 20 years of Investigation and experiments on primates, with the conclusion that if the food in take is 30% less, as long as respecting the proportion of all essential nutrients, the males would live longer and the females very much longer. Whether this effect would apply to humans is not known yet. Considering that this new law, biologically speaking, also works with rats and worms, it's encouraging to continue investigating the possibility of including humans. Nothing is said whether such experiment is being studied, at least not officially, but outside the laboratories, people automatically cut down on their food consumption during summer, simply by losing appetite due to the heat, or by design with the objective of looking slimmer in bikinis and tight swimming trunks. In either case, the prospect is the same according to the science, you live longer. Adding to that is the concluded fact that now what was deemed as impossible before with regard to certain illnesses, diseases and operations, are now found to be possible. Most encouraging is the discovery that losing one's kidney as result of illness, accident or donation, the remaining kidney can grow notably, to compensate the functionality of the other. A team of medical science investigators in Spain has discovered in rats the protein 'Tweak' that is responsible to regulate the division of cells, increase their number and therefore the renal mass, according to the work of the team, directed by Alberto Ortiz, and published recently in the 'Journal of Cell and Molecular medicine'. The same team is also investigating on finding Anti-Tweak, because, positive though it is to regenerate cells to the injured kidney, this protein can also induce the division of tumorous cells! What then? Eeny, meey, miny moe ... ?

I feel somewhat annihilated with the latest concept of being referred to, with all the rest of computer users, as 'digital natives', people who navigate through Internet. I have been called all sorts of things: unemployed, self-employed, consumer, client, customer, subject, citizen, teacher, model, patient, voter, user, but 'digital native'?
I guess it's not meant to be degrading or disrespectful, just means that we are part of the generation that's born to, brought up with, or simply having been caught off-guard by the unavoidable wave of modern trends that sweeps up and carries off by the digital revolution. According to the Association Press in New York, Marc Prensky is the father of this denomination, in opposition to 'digital immigrants'.
This writer and author of didactic video games, sustained that those born in the digital era - Digital Homosapiens employ technical resources in the natural manner almost innate, different from those born in the analogical era, who are obliged to immigrate to the digital world, who use the new resources with the inheritance of the older technology. Much Like one learning a new language as an adult: however fluent, always exist some accent compared with the native speaker.
There's another kind, me for instance, that are practically illiterate in anything technical or technological, not even qualified as digital homosapiens. What are we? Digital Apes?

Has anybody else read or heard the incredible report, that hair can be converted into diamonds? Especially, not anybody's hair, but Michael Jackson's. Apparently one Chicago firm has informed the media that they had obtained some hair belonging to Michael Jackson, which had been partly burnt in 1984 (they had the foresight already then to have kept it till now?) while he was shooting the commercial for Pepsi Cola, and they are now planning to create a limited edition of diamonds with it. Adding to the announcement: "This is not a joke", said Dean VandenBiesSen, founder of LifeGem, that had patented the process to extract carbon from hair, to transform in crystals then in high quality diamonds. Sub-products emerging from the slightest connection with any big name celebrities sell, no matter the product itself is of any practical value or not. Very limited in my knowledge of such science, I simply can't fathom how hair could have any contribution in the fabricating of diamonds. Aren't they supposed to be natural stones, something rock hard, but based on something so fragile as hair?? Brittle as well after being burnt??? That was about 4 years ago. I would dearly like to know how this is possible and what kind of process is necessary. More than anything, I would like to know the why of it all. So that you can show off your engagement ring saying it contains a bit of Michael Jackson? And, most of all, why such sensational news is heard no more?? Current Mood: Blah

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs ...
Then You Are Probably The Family Dog! And you thought I was going to get all spiritualwith this, huh?!

Apart from doing translations, English/Spanish and vice versa for a construction firm, I also give private lessons of these 2 languages to adults, mainly business people, or whoever seeks my help. A new Spanish student of mine seemed to have problem with distinguishing the correct usage of the English words: somebody, nobody, anybody and everybody. And, whether the verb that goes with each should be singular or plural. When she looked perplexed despite my having painstakingly explained with examples of each of these words, I had the following little story written down for her to study. This is a story of 4 people, named Somebody, Nobody, Anybody, and Everybody. They have an important job to do and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Somebody would have to actually do it. In the end, Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done. For homework, I asked that she wrote a story to illustrate the correct usage of another 4 words: Something, Nothing, Anything, Everything. Would you like to write that story for her? Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I'm lying.
On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a dozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem.
"The garbage disposal unit is dead again!" "You know where the button is," I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. 'But I'm scared!' she persisted. 'What if it starts going and sucks me in?' There was a meaningful pause and then, 'C'mon, it'll only take you a second.'
So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behaviour as extremely cowardly.
Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing.
It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs. She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region.
Wild animals are sometimes faced with a 'fight or flight' syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the 'flight' option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me.
Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of 'been-there, done-that' paramedics.
Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter ... and not succeeding.
Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back into the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. 'What's the matter?' They all asked, 'Cat got your tongue?

Not Long Ago Scientists at Rolls Royce built a gun specifically to launch dead Chickens at the windshields of airliners, and military jets all travelling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.
American engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the American engineers.
When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's back-rest in two and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin like an arrow shot from a bow.
The horrified Yanks sent Rolls Royce the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield and begged the British scientists for suggestions.
Rolls Royce responded with the following one-line memo:
Defrost the chicken!

Apart from what I was talking about recently, the outdoor cinemas, and the normal activities on beaches like sing-alongs, mini concerts, dances, there's also opera transmitted directly from the famous Opera houses like the Liceu and the Coliseo, onto the huge screen on some beaches. This latter started 7 years ago, has now become the expected regular feature in the summer months, to delight the perennial opera enthusiasts, and educating the younger generation who is not yet initiated in this art. The projection has also since extended to the public gardens. So far, famous works like Turandot of Puccini, Madam Butterfly, Hansel and Gretel, Weddings of Figaro amongst others, and the renowned tenor Jose Carreras ... For day time, the public libraries on wheels also come to the beaches as well for those who prefer to sunbathe or just take it easy reading on the sand than to swim. This service is free, all you need is your normal library card (issue to all resident free on request) or, if you are a foreigner, your identity card or passport. There are hundreds of titles and types of novels, fictions or non-fiction, including comics, magazines and press, local or international. The only restriction is the book you borrow must be return on the same day, from 11.00 to 18.00 daily. If you are hooked by a murder mystery and haven't yet discovered who done it yet comes the closing hour, no big problem, the book will be kept for you the following day if you are the first to ask for it. I live just yards away from the beach in Roses! So with the dozens of offers all available on the beach: food, drinks, massage, nail care, music, dance, games, books, and operas, who has time to swim?
