Turkey and Other Thoughts on Thanksgiving
Posted On 11/16/2007 04:10:29
My friend, Marty..you may know him as sharkfin of the morning blogs..wrote about turkey this morning. I thought I'd add my thoughts...

I'm weighing in on the side of turkey as delicious, especially with whole cranberry sauce. And it's very healthy! My daughter, on the other hand, would prefer, say, a ham for Thanksgiving dinner. Ham?? That's almost sacrilegious on Thanksgiving, isn't it? LOL

Ok..and what about pumpkin pie? Darned if I can wait till "the day" for a taste of that delicacy. Most years I buckle and just have to buy some sort of pumpkin pie, tart or whatever before Thanksgiving arrives. They have them in the stores before Halloween, for heaven's sake! We bought a pumpkin pie, Lou-Ann and I, while she was visiting here recently. Mmm..mmm..good with whip cream on top! But makes it not quite so special once Thanksgiving rolls around. *sigh*

Hm..and then there's mince meat pie, which no longer has meat in it that I'm aware of. Another of my favorite holiday desserts. I know, I know..I'm probably in the minority. Hm, I feel a poll coming on...

I'm with you, Marty. I do NOT like Thanksgiving called "turkey day." Geez! That misses the whole meaning behind having that holiday. Guess some people are just uncomfortable with the idea that they owe thanks to God for all they have, not only one day a year but every day.

Happy Birthday tomorrow (Friday), Marty..and many blessings!

Get It?

Halloween-A Bit Late
Posted On 11/08/2007 01:00:55
Good morning, Boomers! I hope you are all well and recovering from the onslaught of all the little (and sometimes NOT so little) candy grabbers at your door (and the possible sugar overload finishing up any leftover candy..the trick is to buy something you like..then when you have leftovers..oh, well, guess you just have to finish them up yourself, right? LOL).

I have a rather long house with the computer in the family room toward the back (where I spend most of my time), so I haven't cared to run back and forth the last few years to tend to the door on Halloween. Got a couple of eggs splattered all over my siding last year, so I decided I'd better join in this time around.

Gene said he'd help. They had him jumping up from dinner numerous times. I was fortunate to pick up a whole box of unopened McDonald's mini Beanie Babies at a garage sale for a song, so we passed them out, one to each costumed visitor.

Living outside the city now, I don't usually get to see my grandchildren all decked out in their costumes, so I was pleasantly surprised this morning when an e-mail arrived from my daughter-in-law with photos of all my little ones in their outfits. My daughter and my son went around with the children together this year. So here are some photos Grandma just had to share...

My son, Tony, with ladybug Arianna (where are the antennae? LOL)...

My daughter, Eliza, with lobster (lobster? who dresses their kid as a LOBSTER, for goodness sake?? LOL) Ismael...

And, last but not least, Frankenstein Joshua and Ninja Joaquín...

So there you have it...a Halloween visit from some little tikes when you thought the day was long gone..till next year anyway. At least they didn't ask you to smell their feet!

Have a good day!

Flowers That Are Free

After my blog on Sunday, where I talked about the flowers Gene had delivered to the house after he left for the Penthouse Cabin, I began to think about how we show love and appreciation in our relationships.

For sure we all like to know the little things we do are noticed, but I think men often don't realize that women think differently. We tend to have our "feelers" out, looking for little signs of how the relationship is going. From my experience, a man is happy if he's fed and taken care of, all the basics. A woman, on the other hand, especially if she takes care of her man's needs (and I'm not talking about sex here), appreciates some sign of acknowledgment, a sincere "thank you", a hug, even a look that says, "I noticed what you do for me."

A bouquet of flowers is very special, and we women grow up seeing such a thoughtful gift as one of the wonderful signs that our man loves us. The little flowers we receive every day, though, in the way of a word, a hug, a look, are what make our day.

Update on Easy Gene
Posted On 11/04/2007 07:15:04
Good Sunday afternoon to you all! I hope the sun is shining in your little corner of the world as it is in mine.

I sit here, alone now, except for Pippen and Iri, as Gene is at his Upper Peninsula cabin home (often referred to as the Penthouse Cabin). He arrived there early Saturday...to find that the copper tubing that conducts the gas from his large tank outside to his heater inside had been STOLEN. Geez! Seems up there they fingerprint anyone who brings in stuff like that for recycling, so he expects an arrest will be imminent. So the electric stove's oven has been keeping him warm. He and a friend replaced the tubing yesterday but it now seems the igniter isn't sparking...so still no heat. Poor guy!

Even with the problems, Gene keeps a positive spirit. During this morning's phone call, he told me of seeing several blue jays, a chickadee and a squirrel outside his window at the feeder. The sun is shining there during the day but with a low of 28 promised for Monday night, I sure hope he gets some heat going...soon.

Oh, I almost forgot. When Gene's away, he has the custom of leaving me a "surprise." Last time it was little notes tucked away where I'd come upon them when I least expected...including in the dog food. LOL This time he began teasing me way ahead, saying there'd be another surprise this time, but to not start looking for it, because I wouldn't find anything. Saturday morning the doorbell rang here at the house, which doesn't often happen. Who could it be?? I ran to the front door to find a delivery man with the most beautiful bouquet of flowers...FOR ME! Here's a photo:

If you look way down in the right-hand corner, you can see Pippen's head..as he forlornly looks out over the back yard..missing his walking partner. I only wish I could explain to him that Gene WILL be back for their daily walks.

Have a blessed Sunday,

Janet

Dance With Me!
Posted On 10/06/2007 08:23:18

Snowball is a medium sulphur crested Eleanora cockatoo and he loves to dance and sing. He loves the Back Street Boys. No one taught Snowball to dance...he just heard this song and suddenly felt like dancing. When he's really in the mood, he dances and sings. And at the end of the performance he takes a bow or two or twenty!! Enjoy the show.
