The Future

The Future
The Future

It is well known that the ground beneath Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is a suitable candidate for a colossal super eruption that could equal the event at Lake Toba, over 70,000 years ago. Geo-hazard expert Bill McGuire has made a study of natural catastrophes and he believes there will be no let up of disasters in the future. Other possibilities he outlines include:

Mega-tsunami: The western coast of La Palma (Canary Islands) is primed to collapse into the sea. When this happens the eastern coastal cities of the USA will be struck by tsunamis 50m high.

Earthquake: Another major Tokyo earthquake on a par with that of 1923 would cause damage totaling $7 trillion, and could trigger a global economic collapse.

Asteroid Impact: A collision with an asteroid 1-1.5 kilometers in diameter would result in the deaths of at least a quarter of the worlds population. The survivors would be hurled back to a level of life consistent with the Middle Ages.

Possible Global Warming: By the end of the century the Earth may be hotter than at any time in the past 150,000 years. No one knows what consequences this would have.

Possible Global Cooling: Just 600 human generations have passed since the end of the last glacial period, but the planet could be priming itself for a return to full glacial conditions – remember, we are currently in an ice age called the Pleistocene glaciation. McGuire believes that all that is needed to induce rapid global cooling is a trigger, and ironically global warming could provide just such a trigger.

But hey, we shouldn’t worry too much. If any of this stuff is going to happen the chances are it’s not likely to be before December 2012!

Chilean Volcano !!

Thousands flee their homes and flights are grounded as Chilean volcano sends plumes of ash showering down
The Chilean volcano which erupted on Monday has sent a towering plume of ash across South America, forcing thousands from their homes, grounding airline flights in southern Argentina and coating ski resorts with a gritty layer of dust instead of snow.

Booming explosions echoed across the Andes as toxic gases belched up from a three-mile-long fissure in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex - a ridge between two craters just west of the Chilean-Argentine border that began erupting Saturday.

Winds blew a six-mile high cloud of ash all the way to the Atlantic Ocean and even into southern Buenos Aires province, hundreds of miles to the north-east.

Authorities in Chile went house to house, trying to persuade stragglers near the volcano to evacuate because of an increasing danger of toxic gas and flash floods.

Winds fanned the ash toward neighbouring Argentina, darkening the sky in the ski resort city of San Carlos de Bariloche, in the centre of the country, and its airport has also been closed.

The eruption in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain, about 575 miles south of the capital, Santiago, also prompted authorities to close a busy border crossing into Argentina.

It was not immediately clear which of the chain's four volcanoes had erupted because of ash cover and weather conditions. The chain last saw a major eruption in 1960.

Massive: An example of a pumice rock from Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain volcano is displayed Local media said the smell of sulphur hung in the air and there was constant seismic activity. 'The Cordon Caulle (volcanic range) has entered an eruptive process, with an explosion resulting in a 10-kilometre-high gas column,' the state emergency office ONEMI said. As a precaution, the government said it was evacuating 3,500 people from the surrounding area.

This development is the latest volcanic activity to affect the country. Three years ago, Chile'sChaiten volcano erupted spectacularly for the first time in thousands of years, spewing molten rock and a vast cloud of ash that reached the stratosphere and was visible from space. It also drifted over neighbouring Argentina, coating towns. Chile's Llaima volcano, one of South America's most active, also erupted that year and again in 2009.

Chile's chain of about 2,000 volcanoes is the world's second largest after Indonesia. Some 50 to 60 are on record as having erupted, and 500 are potentially active.

An extraordinary cloud formation is created by the ash rising several miles into the atmosphere. It was the latest in a series of volcanic eruptions in Chile in recent years. Chile's Chaiten volcano erupted spectacularly in 2008 for the first time in thousands of years, spewing molten rock and a vast cloud of ash that reached the stratosphere.

The ash also swelled a nearby river and ravaged a nearby town of the same name.

Cat stuck up a Cactus
Posted On 05/18/2013 04:29:41

How did he get up there? The cat who got stuck up a cactus

He's found himself in a rather prickly situation - but at least he didn't get eaten.

This terrified bobcat was spotted teetering on top of a 50ft cactus after running for its life from a hungry lion.

He stayed there for SIX hours, just to make sure the lion had gone, and incredibly escaped without a scratch.

Prickly situation: Bobcat is 50ft up the Giant Saguaro Cactus in Arizona

The mountain lion that was stalking him however just circled the base, stared upwards and growled for a few minutes before giving up and walking off.

The drama unfolded on the Giant Saguaro Cactus in Arizona's Sonoran Desert.

It is an enormous plant with two-inch spikes and is thought to be up to 300-years-old.

Photographer Curt Fonger, 69, captured what happened on film.

He said: 'A friend called me at 7am saying one of his workers had seen a bobcat being chased by a mountain lion.

Cat stuck up a Cactus
Incredible escape: The bobcat stayed perched on top of this cactus for several hours

'It ran across the road in front of his car and climbed up a large saguaro cactus at the roadside, with the lion hot on its tail.

'The lion didn't pursue the bobcat up the cactus but circled the base.

'It looked up at the bobcat, growled several times, then turned around and trotted back up from where it had come.

'The mountain lion probably had cubs, the bobcat had intruded on its territory and she gave chase to warn the bobcat not to come close to her young family.

'I was astonished that the bobcat was on such a high prickly perch.

'In fact, the beautiful creature seemed quite content and was lying on top of the cactus. It only stood up when I got it's attention.

Help! The cat clings on desperately and does not appear to have any clue how to get down

'I thought it would come down when we left.

'But I found out later that the bobcat stayed put for over six hours before finally deciding it was safe enough to come back down.

'When he came down he looked around and then trotted back towards the Superstition Mountains.'

Curt, from Gold Canyon, Arizona, added: 'Although it may be common for a bobcat to escape one of it's major predators, it is very uncommon to have witnessed such an event first hand.

'I personally examined the base of the giant cactus after the bobcat had left.

'There was no hair or blood - only claw marks.

'Its a successful story of a bobcat avoided being eaten by a mountain lion with a happy ending of it's successful exit back into the desert.'

The giant cactus is extremely rare. Just one in 1,000 seeds germinate and it then takes up to ten years to grow one inch.

Its first arm develops between the ages of 75 and 100 years old or about the time they reach 15ft.

Unharmed: Despite clambering to the top of a spiky cactus this bobcat didn't even get a scratch
