You Walked Away (pantoum)
Posted On 01/29/2011 12:00:26

I needed you that day

and would not beg for your return

you always walk away

for your touch I yearn

and would not beg for your return

You broke my heart too many times

for your touch I yearn

you commit so many little crimes

You broke my heart too many times

you are like stone and marble

you commit so many little crimes

a life with you is impossible

you are like stone and marble

I love you so

a life with you is impossible

my love is more than you know

I love you so

you always walk away

My love is more than you know

I needed you that day

The Devil’s Mistress in New Orleans Blogophilia 47.3
Posted On 01/19/2011 12:18:29

Hi! Remember me? I’m the Devil=s Mistress. For those of you who forgot my story I’ll try to summarize

I am the Devil’s Mistress, not the Devil Himself (who I refer to as Mr.D, my lover’s boss). My lover is a member of Mr.  D.’s mid management team. The Devil collects souls It is the mid management team’s job to get to the client just before they die, grab the soul and send it along to Mr. D. Therefore knowledge of soul behaviour and skill in extraction is required.

I frankly think people would rather believe me from outer space than think that the Devil employs mid management personnel

Just wanted to pop in and tell yo’ all (just back from the south) about our latest adventures. My lover invited me to New Orleans recently He would be working out of town and gone for a while so figured he’d make the trip part business and part pleasure.

The job did not involve his usual tasks but entailed his skills. It was also a joint venture with Mr..D.’s  New Orleans branch., the Louisiana Reapers (These reapers remove the souls of people, preferably just before they die and escort them until they move on into their afterlife. ) and the New Orleans Tourist Board. The Louisiana Reapers are ordinary reapers and do not work for Mr.. D as their clients do not have a contact with the Devil. However, it is a similar skill set as my lover’s and therefore qualified them for the New Orleans job

Every now and then Mr. D does cooperate with other companies that may not directly affect his interests but helps with good will among the other organizations working in the field.

At some point he might need their help, as right now they need his help

The job is not 9-5.  People die all the time, almost every minute of the day.  Therefore, as you might imagine teams are in place in every country in the world. And because time is of the essence, they require small regional squads in order to expediently reach the victim, I mean the client, in a timely fashion. The soul must be taken quickly right before death. The timing is crucial. Obviously, Mr.. D.’s team is huge and the loss of any employees on any given day ensues in a larger work load for the remaining colleagues. They can only hope, in these instances, that the work load (i.e. souls to be collected) diminishes to some extent in order to not over tax their resources.

Therefore, the New Orleans region called for outside help in order to not overly burden their workers.  Even so, everyone not on the Plantation job worked mega overtime as the loss of their co-workers naturally left them short handed. And, no, they did not receive overtime pay. They work for the Devil!  No overtime in Hell! However, it is possible the Louisiana Reapers did get overtime pay as their Collective Agreement is somewhat different than Mr.D.’s employees.

I felt sorry for the fellows on the mid management team left at home as they had to work triple over time. The period between Christmas and New Years is high season for Mr. D since during this time many contracts come due to be paid in full.

The problem in New Orleans involved the old plantations around the city. The souls were getting caught in mirrors. Many in the world still  believe that you should cover a mirror if someone dies in a room so that their image is not reflected. They believe that the mirror will capture the dead person=s soul, thus preventing its entry into heaven. Some old passed down oral traditions state that the Devil invented mirrors for this specific purpose (a lie so my lover insists)

Too many plantations had become excessively haunted and the tourist trade was suffering. Tourists like some ghost -like experiences but if they are over done it becomes too frightening and the visitors are scared away

I really looked forward to this unexpected break in the routine. The overtime my lover was working due to the December rush of business and his wife’s nagging at him to be at home more (no divorce in Hell) meant we did not get to see much of each other.

One of the many perks, and, yes, they do exist, of working for Mr. D. is when we have to travel, commercial flights are not taken. We had a private jet for the group going south and travel in style, comfort and convenience He does not give a big fat Raspberry flavoured gummy frog about his carbon footprint.  It isn’t easy being green environmentally He’s the Devil and green isn’t his problem. He’s the prince of darkness not of greenness

I had a grand time in New Orleans. While the teams were working at night we out- of-towners would get together and hit the clubs in the French Quarter. The local spouses showed us around. Unfortunately, during Christmas break, the city becomes pretty crowded. As well the Saints were playing so football fans also streamed into the city. We were lucky that the locals in our group knew their way around the best clubs and we managed to see groups that the normal tourist does not have an opportunity to hear. The music is everywhere from jazz to Cajun, country and folk

During the day, when our spouses were off, we shopped, took tours of the city and dined in the fabulous restaurants. Even if one is not hungry, the smells wafting down the street would pull you into a restaurant just to taste whatever is making your nose wrinkle up in joy. New Orleans has so many sights to behold: the churches, architecture, museums and the swamps and the river. The citizens of New Orleans love to shop, eat and drink, not necessarily in that order.

The malls in New Orleans are amazing. Magazine Street is 6 miles of shopping! The oysters (and you know what they are good for…) were small and sweet, the gumbo zesty and thick. The drinks large and smooth Who could ask for more?

Alas, due to the hard work of everyone, the problem was solved in a shorter time than anticipated. Apparently some of the plantations were not covering up their mirrors properly as they felt it interfered with the decor of the homes. The reapers ensured the mirrors were covered adequately; they extracted the souls from the haunted ones and sent them on their way. The New Orleans teams found quite a few souls that belonged to Mr.  D.  Apparently in order to get out of their contract some of them tried the “hide in the mirror” trick. These clients were harshly dealt with and Mr. D was quite pleased with the surprise addition to his coffers.  I was not pleased at having to leave the Big Easy for home as it had been a wonderful holiday.

We went home fully relaxed. Well I was relaxed. He was pooped from working all the time. The good music, food and congenial company left me calmed and refreshed Sometimes the stress from the work he did got to be too much. I had hung around with the spouses of the local and visiting teams. We shared the same issues and concerns and had the opportunity to mingle, vent and discuss these issues and concerns. I found it therapeutic

Throw a BBQ and the people will come

Friday byways with Barbara

by the fireside

This is a repost (edited) from July – and considering the  By Ways topic is by the fireside – and considering that it is so cold out – everywhere – I thought this might warm everyone up – inside and out

By the fire – the BBQ

We provide the meat – chicken lamb beef and guests provide desserts and salads

We could all use a bit of that warm summer sun !

Flowers from a friend’s garden

The watermelon ship was floating in fruit salad

summer feet

More summer feet - no, I don't have a fetish !

The Venezuelan flan was one of the desserts

Turns dark about 9:30 and quite cool. We and two other couples sat at the picnic table amid all the clutter drinking and telling bad jokes - finally kicked them out at 11. Was a good day to catch up on the news with people haven’t seen in a while.

(sorry about that - pics are too big)

Priscilla Blogophilia 46.3
Posted On 01/12/2011 10:56:30

On Tuesday morning something happened to Priscilla that’s never happened before. She received a call from the Administrator, Deborah, at the clinic where Priscilla has her psychiatric practice, requesting a “little chat” at the end of the day. . Priscilla had never been called into the Administrator’s office, until now, and she wondered why Deborah wished to speak to her. Normally Deborah would just e mail with whatever she needed.

Later, walking down the hallway to Deborah’s office, thoughts raced through Priscilla’s head. What is going on? Her eyes felt wet. She did not know if it was due to frustration, anger or agitation. For some reason a word popped into her head from the crossword puzzle Chester had worked on at breakfast that morning. The word was moil, meaning to moisten. How absurd to remember a crossword puzzle clue when she had more important issues on her mind.

I wonder why Deborah wants to speak to me? I know I’ve done nothing wrong. I am a good therapist. Maybe someone is out to get me? The ground under my feet feels uneven even though I know the floor is perfectly straight. My head feels as light as air. It can’t be me. This job is great and I don’t want to lose it. I know it’s not me that is the problem, right? Of course it’s not me.

In the weeks preceding their chat, the Administrator heard from a number of clients.

She heard comments such as: “She always wants to put me on more meds.” “She seems angry all the time - angry at me ?” “She doesn’t seriously consider what I say. She does not listen to me”.

” When I mentioned my talking plant who tells me what to do, she did not believe me, did not even question me about a talking plant for Pete’s sake, she just simply said I was lying and that was the end of the subject.”  â€œOne day her anger seemed to be directed at her husband! I couldn’t believe she was bringing a personal issue into our therapy time. She mumbled something about paint .... it was almost the end of our hour so I just said see you next week  and left.”

After the last client left Deborah mulled over what she had heard

I’ve never heard remarks like these before about a therapist. Oh sure, patients complain about incompatibility with the therapist and inconvenient appointment times.. But never this!! Why, listening is a cardinal rule for a therapist. For so many patients to mention similar issues - well - I’ve never heard of such a situation. It seems Priscilla does not use Challenging with the clients either. Challenging is not the same as confrontation; it is a reputable technique. And, my goodness, she does not even seem to regard the clients as people. Very worrisome

Deborah became very concerned after hearing these statements from the clients. She thought long and hard about what action to take. She’d known Priscilla for several years, though not very well. At their initial interview when she was hired, Priscilla had mentioned that she had some childhood issues. These problems were supposedly worked through in Priscilla’s own therapy. Deborah had been invited to Priscilla and Chester’s home only once, for a Christmas party. It was the first time she had met Chester, and she recalled somehow thinking that Chester was an odd duck. Though he is a successful lawyer and they do appear like a perfect couple. Their home was so pristine, spotlessly clean and scrupulously tidy. She had felt as if she needed a sweater to ward off a chill in the house yet the temperature was set high enough.

The lush carpet in Deborah’s office steadied her trembling feet and the quiet, end of day offices calmed Priscilla. She sat primly  in the comfortable maroon chair in front of Deborah’s desk with hands folded in her lap, looking directly at Deborah.. Yet on the inside she imagined throwing Deborah off a cliff. In the discussion, Deborah explained that some clients had complained about Priscilla.

Priscilla defended herself saying she has been in practice many years, has worked a long time with the clients (though Deborah did not of course mention any names) and knew them better than they knew themselves. Priscilla honestly looked astonished at Deborah’s words. “Maybe the clients do not want to hear what I am telling them for their own good. And I can’t understand why the clients went over my head and complained to you.”

Deborah was not so sure Priscilla heard what she was saying. Deborah just wanted to clear a passageway, to make a path, to somehow connect with Priscilla. She was not sure Priscilla was really listening. The issue may merit further investigation, she decided. The meeting was terminated. Deeply troubled, Deborah tidied up her office, dusted off her snow globe of the Roman Coliseum on her desk, locked the office door and left for home, her thoughts all jumbled up in her head.

Sand Castles
Posted On 01/09/2011 04:42:32

Children build castles

in the moist sand,

with spiraling towers,

and dreams just as high.

Envisioning mystical knights

saving ladies

making safe

all the land

As they grow up

and their dreams fade away,

they remember the castles

built by the sea.

Mystical knights, like the sand,

seep away

 with  the memories

in the warm summer sun

As the sea washes away

the castle towers,

so too, the  dreams wash away

by life’s incoming tide.

New Orleans Photo blog for Blogophilia
Posted On 01/05/2011 11:33:16

So I took over 200 pics – here is s sampling

Our holiday this year consisted of sightseeing and learning about New Orleans. No swim in the ocean this trip

Interestingly for bonus points this week we had to incorporate a quote from Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. My gracious, how convenient! The Louisiana Purchase took place in 1803 while he was president.

He had this to say about it:

“Every eye in the U.S. is now fixed on this affair of Louisiana. Perhaps nothing since the revolutionary war has produced more uneasy sensations through the body of the nation.”

Tourists in New Orleans will often say “Meet me at the Café du Monde”

We did not get there but did get a pic – was always too crowded

The café Du Monde is in the French Quarter not far from the French Market

The French Market, “America’s Oldest Public Market”, has existed on the same site since 1791. What began as a Native American trading post has become a cultural and entertainment destination.

Interesting residence in French Quarter

An unique pigeon on Jackson Square

The trolley system is pretty good in the city and we took them when we could

The conductors all had an amusing, individual patter

First we took a swamp tour

The fishers set their traps for the cat fish at night and come back the next day – why get up so early in the morning if don’t have to?

The pic shows that a fish has been caught

Egret on the swamp

Elvis is a year old alligator the tour guide, Reggie, keeps on board so that everyone can handle a real alligator

Moss kept getting wound around the rotors of the boat due to the shallowness of the water Reggie had to open the door, bend down and remove the moss so that the boat could move more smoothly

Spanish moss on the Cyprus trees

Scenic view from the boat

The city tour we took on the second day was equally interesting.

We visited a cemetery, St. Louis #3. The above-ground tombs in the cemeteries of New Orleans are often referred to as "cities of the dead." Eventually, New Orleans' graves were kept above ground following the Spanish custom of using vaults where many people are interred in one tomb. As more are buried, the oldest bones get put into a bag at the side or back of the vault. The plaque documents who and when these people were entombed

We got to the lower 9th ward where the flooding from Katrina was at its worst. It reached 13 feet in some areas. This photo shows the water mark on a fence. Not 13 feet but enough

The markings on this house in the Lower 9th tells us that the gas is on, the date and no bodies were found in the house

An abandoned house

Night pics from the hotel

Mulates Restaurant New Orleans
Posted On 01/04/2011 12:28:18

Turns out I don’t like the taste of ‘gater - too fishy tasting and sort of tough texture, which is not surprising, but the bread pudding for dessert was lip smacking good and the hurricane drinks went down sooo smoothly.

The pics here are from our second visit to the restaurant when it was not quite so busy

The restaurant was two blocks from our hotel and close to the RiverWalk complex of shops walkways and of course places to eat right across the street.

Across the other street, a convenience store we did use on several occasions.

A sign at the front of the eatery declared the kitchen fit to re open after Katrina, a destination my imagination refuses to visit. The server told us the place was not destroyed during the storm, except for human damage. However, all businesses required approval before re opening, damaged or not. As soon as one steps into the place, the aromas waft over to your taste buds causing them to jump up and demand to taste whatever is creating those olfactory sensations.

A Cajun band played in the far corner- drum, accordion, guitar and fiddle; they sang in both French and English.

Mulates is large but without a sense of endlessness; a “cheers” friendliness feeling like a neighbourhood local. The noise level was loud enough to know you are in a crowded restaurant, low enough to hear yourself think

The tables wore red and white checkered plastic table cloths offering a lively and warm greeting

I asked the waitress, Marissa, if it indeed is a local hang out. Nope. The restaurant is in the middle of the hotel district in the warehouse section of the city and the owners wished to crate a local neighbourhood feel. They succeeded

Kids, little ones, got up to dance and bounce around and two elderly couples danced a variety of ball room steps, including the waltz and two step and some I did not recognize. They danced the entire time we sat at our table. Such energy and stamina, and grace and flow as well

New Orleans does not allow bad, tasteless or boring food. The citizenry appear to live for shopping, eating and drinking - not necessarily in that order.

Some of the friendliest and most helpful people I have ever met live in New Orleans. The trait appears to transfer to tourists as well since the ones we ran into at our hotel were just as friendly

A large variety of Louisiana classics are offered on the menu. Much of it fried. As our swamp tour guide joked, “fry it and we will eat it”. The coatings were tasty and not overly thick. We ordered a Cajun appetizer sampler just to try everything out. It included: alligator, catfish, the most delicious little meat pies, frog’s legs, crawfish, gumbo, au gratins, and blackened fish. And Etouffee which is not a soup and not a stew, but something in-between. The dish contained crawfish but the pieces were so small I could not really get a feel for the taste

Mulates with its good food, zesty music and friendly staff is an excellent place to hang out in the city of New Orleans.
