Target, the dog who survived Afghan war and melted hearts on Oprah, mistakenly put down at Arizona animal shelter

Last updated at 6:06 PM on 16th November 2010 Target the dog lived through explosions in war-torn Afghanistan, saved the lives of U.S. soldiers and was featured on Oprah - but she couldn't survive a brief stay at an Arizona animal shelter. An employee at the Pinal County facility was today on administrative leave after euthanizing the shepherd mix by mistake. 'When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow,' said Ruth Stalter, director of the Animal Care And Control centre.
'Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.' Scroll down for video report  Target befriended American soldiers in Afghanistan, and helped scare a suicide bomber who showed up at a base wearing 25 lbs of explosives, barking at and biting the terrorist  Target was hailed a hero and her injuries were treated by medics as though she was a soldier. She lived, came to live in Arizona and appeared on Oprah with her owner Sgt. Young Sgt. Terry Young, the owner of the dog, told The Arizona Republic, 'I just can't believe that something like this would happen to such a good dog.' Target and two other dogs, Rufus and Sasha, were mutts who befriended soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, who began to feed them and treated the canines as pets on the military base. One night in February a suicide bomber came to the base in the middle of the night, wearing 25 pounds of explosives and intent on killing Americans.
The three dogs frightened, barked at and bit the bomber, scaring him and waking the sleeping soldiers in the process. Deterred, the terrorist detonated himself outside instead of coming in. The lives of 50 soldiers were potentially spared because of the dogs' actions.
Sasha was killed, but Target and Rufus lived. Medics treated the injured dogs like soldiers and the two were saved.
Only five soldiers were injured in the bombing and all recovered Sgt Young said the dogs was treated like royalty from then on at the base at Dand Patan, near the Pakistan border. With the help of aid groups, Sgt Young brought Target to the San Tan Valley area south-east of Phoenix in August, when he returned home from his tour of duty. Rufus went to live with another soldier in Georgia.
Target was featured on 'Oprah' in September in a show about amazing animals.
On Friday of last week the dog escaped from the family's backyard. Sgt Young then put out notices and contacted TV stations that did reports on the missing dog.  Sgt Young's 4-year-old son (seen here when Target arrived from Afghanistan) has been devastated by the pet's death and asked his dad to take out the poison and bring the beloved animal home  She wore a special pink camouflage collar A neighbour found Target wandering later that day and put her in his backyard and called the shelter. The dog did not have a microchip or tag. On Friday night, Sgt Young found Target's picture on a website used by Pinal County's dog catchers to help owners track lost pets. He thought the shelter was closed for the night and weekend. He showed up at the shelter in Casa Grande to claim his dog on Monday, only to find out she was dead. County officials say the employee mistakenly took the dog out of its pen Monday morning and euthanized it. 'My four-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet,' a teary Sgt Young told the local CBS TV station. The Arizona Republic said Sgt Young and his family will get the dog's cremated remains.

Dear Colleagues,
My neighbor next door always think that he is best at everything. Such such pride inspire to his wife and his three children to see other humans as trash, and if humans are trash, animals must be worse.
For the six months after I moved in to the neighborhood, I've seen nothing but horror from this family. From calling names, to throwing sewer water to a dog, to burning toads alive, to kicking cats and chicken, throwing stones to birds or killing small kitten by crushing them with stone.
The most recent victim of their diabolic lifestyle is this little angel:
I found him when he cried as loud as he can, while frantically trying to escape thfrom a burning trash by thr streets. the kids had tied him to a stone so he cannot run away from fire.
When they realize that I am coming for them, they kick and beaten this kitten in the hope he would be dead before I reach them.
Certainly they have no idea how powerful an angry rescuer can be, or it's just their pride that make them think a 6 years old can overpower a 35 years old hag.
This beautiful angel is now safe at my home. His whiskers are all burnt out, including some of his eyebrow. He inhaled a lot of smoke, and his eyes can't stop shedding tears although I wash them out with water and common eye drop.
He got severely stressed after what happened, and refuse to eat that I have to tube feed him. It is that time when I realize he got two small ulcer on his tongue. I have no idea what those kids forced him to eat, but until he is cured, he won't be able to eat properly.
The veterinarian suggest that I have his lung X ray-ed, because he cough endlessly and have difficulty of breathing. I also have to purchase some special eye treatment that would help him heal his eyes, before it gone worse and he turned blind.
His tongue would heal by itself, but for the meantime I will need to continue tube feeding him.
His medical treatment cost a lot of money I cannot afford alone. In all of my capacity I would not let those satanic spawn break his wings, but I need you. Be kind to lend your hand here:

The reasons for not paying attention to breathing at times throughout the day are simple - we are too involved with what is going on in our minds to do so.
Becoming more fully involved in the present moment is a doorway to new experience that cannot happen while one is fully engaged with the mind. What new experience? This depends upon the flow of awareness that is uniquely the inner journey of each soul.
The experience of the present creates a new view of life - one that does not rely on worrying, planning and thinking in order to feel safe. Instead, it relies on trusting, allowing and participating in the flow of life in order to feel safe. This is an important part of the consciousness shift that is happening now and it can happen more fully for those willing to embrace the present moment with love and care as if it mattered. Each moment matters. Each is sacred. But to perceive this one must be there with one's full self. This is God's invitation to each soul - to show up at the feast of life.

His profile displayed with a screenshot, his school's FB group instantly flooded with complaints & photos of the dumbass and his intollerable behaviour. His school's FB Group - which just yesterday hosted a slew of the above photo's now has none and all admin's for the Group belonging to his highschool have apparently been overwhelmed with harsh warnings and messages and have all jumped shi...p leaving no administrators left.

To Dino KouKos;I hope u realize the thousands of people you have upset all over the world in doing something or, as you state 'pretending' to do something so monstrous. Cruelty is not a joke & it is no...t acceptable to make light of it EVER! It is very real & the world has a hard enough time fighting to protect animals f...rom the vicious treastment of animals & wildlife everyday, dumb shit like this halts other positive steps for animals who do need help as people spend time hunting people like u down.If u are serious about what u say u should show it & take a stand for animals.U can make all abusers know, there are eyes everywhere, things like this don't go unnoticed & will not be tolerated even when the offenders are on the otherside of the globe. A very true reality is also Justice is not always served by the courts-people who post things like this create a very real danger for themselves & the people around them.

LAKE TRAVERSE RESERVATION BANNING DOGS
ATTENTION: We need your help – visit our website and sign up to be a foster TODAY. We have a major crisis in progress. The Lake Traverse Indian Reservation is banning dogs from all tribal housing units on 12/31/10. Lake Traverse is on the MN/SD border, and is about 4 hours away. There are approximately 10 housing areas on the reservation. We are estimating 15-20 dogs per housing area, so a total of 150-200 dogs. The article said that people found with dogs after Jan 1st would face legal action. But, it’s also likely the tribal police would start shooting dogs too. The dog owners will have the option to move to a different location that will accept dogs (but we’re not sure how many places on the Rez are not governed by the Tribal Housing Authority), or they could rehome their dogs to friends and family. We don’t even have a guess as to how many people will be able to do one of these options. So, we are anticipating probably 150 dogs will need to be rescue. Rescues are working together to line up foster homes for these homeless pups. Each rescue will likely only be able to take in a couple dogs, which is why we need you’re help. The vast majority will need rescue in MN. Although almost all breeds could be found, bullies are already banned from tribal housing, so the vast majority will be non-bullies. Cheryl, one of the coordinator of this rescue mission has seen a lot of huskies, shepherds, labs and mixes of those. This time, a lot of the small dogs will need to go as well. Cheryl mentioned they are either big or smaller breeds under 20 lbs. There are also usually a fair amount of puppies. In this weather, we need to try to rescue as many dogs as we can. We need to get them into a warm environment. Please, we are in dire need of your help. A lot of the residents have already opened their front door and "set their dog free". We knew it would happen, but were expecting that would be towards the end as time was running out. Instead many are doing it now. Therefore, as a potential foster you need to be aware of only knowing the possible breed that you will be getting. At this point, we will be rounding up strays that have been set loose, so it’s not possible for us to get pictures and information prior to the next transport. However, know that they get along well with all people including kids, other dogs, and usually cats. We know this because the dogs run loose and would be shot of they were causing problems for people or other animals. Potty training and interest in roaming are probably the two main issues a foster home would need to deal with. Our next transport will be Nov 20th and pick – up will most likely be in St. Cloud. If you would like to help save these poor dogs, fill out a foster application on our website www.ruffstartrescue.com. One of our foster coordinators will be going with the Nov 20th transport and will be able to send pictures through picture mail, to give you an idea of what they are finding. This way we can accommodate to any restrictions you may have with breeds or sizes. So, please get in line to foster one of these dogs in need.With your help, we can try to save all 150 (approx) dogs.

These
3 babies were left at a shelter in Tennesee - there were originally 5
but 2 did not make it through the weekend. The commercial breeder they
came from uses this shelter for his pups or other dogs that he doesn't
see a profit in - these babies had sarcoptic mange and are full of
roundworms . Just looking at the pictures of these babies brings over
whelming sadness . They are barely clinging to life and everyday holds
something new , somedays that may be good and somedays it may be bad .
PLEASE keep these babies in your thoughts and prayers . If you would

This is Delta she came in today as a stray when I seen her with a wagging tail she lowered her head and chest approached me very gingerly. What a sweetie I sat down and pet her on top of her head and gave her a hug she tried to crawl into my lap (sigh). Delta has been guessed to be 2 years old and weighs 26.LBS

They need every free second of their time to process Lost and Found checks and care for the animals. Not to mention people will think the dogs is safe and then they die. STOP IT OR I WILL TAKE DOWN THIS PAGE!!!!
