Catherine Annette Hanshaw was an American Jazz Age singer. She was
one of the most popular radio stars of the late 1920s and early 1930s,
with many of her most notable performances taking place on NBC's Maxwell
House Show Boat. Over four million of her records had been sold by
1934, following the peak of her popularity.
In her ten-year recording career, she recorded about 250 sides. In a
1934 poll conducted by Radio Stars magazine, she received the title of
best female popular singer. Second place went to Ethel Shutta, third
place went to Ruth Etting, and fourth place went to Kate Smith.

David and Louise Turpin were convicted in 2019 for the prolonged abuse and imprisonment of their 13 children in Perris, California. For years, the Turpins subjected their children, aged 2 to 29, to severe neglect, starvation, and confinement, often shackling them to beds and denying them basic hygiene. The abuse came to light in January 2018 when 17-year-old Jordan Turpin escaped and alerted authorities, leading to the couple’s arrest. Both parents pleaded guilty to multiple felony counts, including torture and false imprisonment, and were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
Following their rescue, the Turpin children faced further challenges. Some were placed in foster homes where they experienced additional abuse. In 2024, foster parents Marcelino, Rosa, and Lennys Olguin were convicted on charges related to the mistreatment of several Turpin siblings, with Marcelino receiving a seven-year prison sentence and Rosa and Lennys receiving probation . The Turpin siblings have since filed lawsuits against Riverside County and associated foster care agencies for failing to protect them.
