FEBRUARY 2009...

2009*4*18 1416 hrs … G’day, Bear….

I have no idea as to how I can get into so much trouble without leaving the house…(is going to the mail box considered leaving the house?)

I go to the mail box…I am dressed! Teeth in this time! Put my response to PCH contest in the box. (meems is gonna win a gazillion dollars contest) What else do I find in the mail box? License plate renewal/reminder… No complaints, at least they sent me one.

On way back down drive, I am dive bombed by some type of winged critter… Seriously…Oh dear, the Hummer family is back for the summer! Need to go get the feeder bottles out of storage, make sure they are clean and then fill them with the sugar mix.

Before I can get to the kitchen door though. I see my BBSBs up there playing in the sun. Not much air moving, so I couldn’t find/see them at first… Winds up here do strange things to the acoustics. You’d think you could hear them more easily if the winds are quiet. Tain’t so. Somehow, it’s easier for me to hear/spot them when the winds are a moving on.

I grabbed my coffee and cigs and sat in the shade on the side porch. Magnificent day! Air is dry (harder to see cone trails on dry day) Temp just right… lit ground level breeze.
74 degrees, count them…. 74 beautiful warm. lovely degrees!!!!

Anyway, I sat outside until the sun started coming over the yard arm…Had to come in .. another Ratz! But I fixed the Hummers a bottle of goodies. Took it out to the same spot as always. Got buzzed while I was doing that! Them lil critters are insistent at best, down right mean at worst. And trust me, They do let me know when their feeder is empty! Have you ever been chewed out by a humming bird? Have you ever had one come thru the door, perch on a light fixture, and then procede to chew you out? They fuss and, I do believe, they cuss… If you can go by the tone of their voices…

Another tip… don’t argue with the Hummer family… Ya ain’t gonna win… Ya might just as well get busy and try to keep them content.

To the house for a moment… I’ve asked questions and gotten diametrically opposed answers… Made phone calls… gotten phone calls. Taken notes.. Started folders…

How bout:
“Temporary subsidy” … This is the first time I’ve heard the word ‘temporary’ used.

If I accept this raise in house payments, (the cancellation of the subsidy) there will be no more increases from now on … This equals an increase of 4% to 5.625% interest…fixed rate. unless the taxes or insurance rates go up. Otherwise, I will face fighting this battle every two years.

I’ve asked for written verification on the ‘info’ “no increase”. Will make copies of everything and forward it to the Honorable Rogers in Congress.

My big question… If I am on a fixed income, where do they expect me to earn the extra to take care of the off-set? At 72 11/12s, it’s a little late for me to try and find a good paying job… And if I should be able to work, what other problems will cascade from working?

What really upsets me is the thought I am not the only one this happens to… Altho it is confusing and I don’t read well, I manage to gets my ducks lined up and fight the good fight. There are thousands of innocents out there who cannot. Men and women both who lose their only homes and have nowhere to go.

I’ve solved my problem basically. I’ll just give up the TV totally/cancel it. I refuse to give up the puter unless the critters are starting to go hungry.

Is this starting to sound like a soap opera? Sheesh! Government agencies have taken $100 away by the month… I think, might be more… Giving up TV will free up $80. A shortfall of $20 I think I can manage.

And how did I get into the mess to begin with? I trusted when I should not have. That’s another long story! Someday I’ll post photos of the last place I lived down here. You won’t want to believe it. I know, I know… I should write a book!

Back to the beauty of this day! Lilacs are very slow in opening… The honey bees are out playing with the hedge flowers. The hornets and wasps are busy homemaking. Found one wasp in the kitchen… almost put my hand on him. That’s the only time I ever get stung is when I don’t know they are there and put my hand on one.

I SAW A ROBIN TODAY…MY FIRST! Blue birds have their nest built on the lite pole. Butterflies are just so busy doing their thing and feeding… The nectar is really flowing on some of the plants.. The Quince out front is covered with bees and the Hummers are building their nests in it.

I saw a small flock of starlings too. Five or six maybe. I heard the one first. Male or female, I dunno. All I can tell you is that a starling has a call which sounds like a drop of water landing in a pool… A lovely and charming sound from such a pesky bird. Heard it the first time ever when I moved here to the mountain.

Later all of mine… go in safety always. Remember to tune out the sounds of civilization and just listen for the sounds of our mother Earth. That way lies peace.

Many hugs and much love. The calmer/logical meems

2009*4*8 0418edt….. Mornin’ Bear…

Lordy pete, what a way to start the day! As you can see, it’s before breakfast and I am up. Unwillingly, mind you but up and semi-alert .. all before breakfast!

Don’t know what the Newbie heard out there but he is singing at the top of his lungs. Cracks me up when he howls… When the whole six pack plus gets to doing a sing-song, I sing with along them. My real singing voice is long gone but the dogs don’t mind.

Ya know, once upon a time ago, I had a tape of wolves singing in the wilderness. I would listen with everything I had…wishing I knew what they were saying to the world.
Then I realized it didn’t matter what they were ‘saying’, not really. As long as the wolf was there, singing and running free, all was right with my world. As long as the wolf sings, I am free… My world is free and I am a part of it.

All my life I longed for ‘something’… wasn’t quite sure just what it was that I was seeking, I only knew something was missing. I was raised, grew up and lived in the city…civilization.

But! After school, on weekends, holidays, days off, I would be out… roaming the banks of the Great Miami river, wading up the feeder creeks…even waded across the B street dam at the power plant… I must have been all of 10 or 11 then.

I caught frogs and tadpoles.. turned over a gazillion rocks to see what might live underneath. I was always alone and often several miles from home. I climbed the hills and I learned.

I learned to get home before the storm gods rolled thru. I learned to feel and read the tornado signs. I listened to the winds. I learned to watch and listen to the birds. I learned to read what the trees were saying in the turn of the leaf.

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/87701-Raincatcher

I
watched the patterns on the surface of the river. I learned early on what these patterns meant.

In the dark of the winter months, I read and I learned. Late at nite, in bed, I would read. I learned to read people too.

I still learn, each and every day! I listen too. Well, part of me does anyway.

I can be buried in a book, running around inside a painting, writing the News and I will still hear the alarm cries of the crows… a round being fired in the distance…any sound out of the ordinary gets my attention right away.

For the most part, I live very quietly here on my mountain on the edge of Dan’l Boone Forest Preserve.. I have more than enuf to keep me occupied and boredom is not in my book!
I often go outside and just look at the cloud formations. I’ve never seen anything like the forms I see here. Oh, I am still learning about my world. Yup, sure am.

And do you have any idea what it’s like to go out and find the heel print of a bear in the sawdust pile? Or hear the dogs raising a fuss over a snapping turtle bigger around than a basketball? Or see the crew go chasing after a rabbit who lives in the nearby rose briars? Or see a bobcat leap across the road in front of you? Or see a bear cub up a tree? Or hear the creek just a talking after a heavy rain? Or to watch the lilac blooms slowly growing and opening day after day?

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/238848-

Ask
me if I am happy and content! Ask me if I laff everyday… Ask if I cry some days for a lost one… Ask me if I enjoy playing gotcha with my friends.. Ask if I am comforted by my beloved 6 pack plus when we settle down for the nite. Ask me if I was thrilled to see a sunbow.

Oh yeah, just ask me. Grab a cup of coffee and be prepared to listen while I tell you of the wonders and freedoms of my life here on my mountain.

Take care all of mine… go in safety always. Remember, no matter where you live, you are a part of this earth, our only home.

Many hugs and much love … meems

2009*4*7 1614 edt… Afternoon, Bear….

OK OK! I quit! Sheesh! Ya try to complain nicely about the weather and what happens!?! Ya get pelted with snow and wind and freezing temps by the boss gods of weather central! I just asked politely when the hell Spring was gonna get here and stay!
Maybe I shoulda phrased it a little differently… Ya think? SmileyCentral.com

I miss Fido… She’s doing ok at her new home with her new boyfriend but she was hard to give up and say good bye to…But I will get some of her off spring when they hatch… Butch asked how many I wanted… Told him 40,000… Done, says he… Oh dear… I think I am in trouble again! Lolol I guess they’ll all fit into the chickyduckgoose pen. Oh well… it’s worth a try anyway! Lolol

1738 edt I am having a terrible time trying to stay on track today…If it ain’t the phone, it’s the phone… Or it’s SmileyCentral.com lololol

Oh there’s all kinds of stuff going on and changes being made… The Boss is gonna be a silent manager of CCC and KK is gonna take it over.

Well, lets see here… I was getting a little overwhelmed with all kinds of things on here too… Pondered giving up a few things myself… Chasing men, cyber sex, drinking, gambling, doing pills, standing on street corners (esp in cold weather- water bed freezes doncha know) and last but not least, lying a lot.. Bad Paula! Shame on me! Lololol

Oh dear! Well, Old Hippy62 has agreed to become a mod in WHVV…And, God help me, I have given him free rein in there… Can we vote here as to whether I have totally lost my mind? Lolol Welcome aboard, John (oldhippy) learn to duck and run for the FOS (fall out shelter) and keep it well stocked, just in case!

Update on the ice cube situation! I managed to pop the cubes out of the tray into my rootbeer mug instead of the iron skillet! Big improvement!

I am picking up pieces of duck egg from the bedroom floor. The Lily carried it into the house and back here to the apartment! She’s the smallest on the 6 pack + but she managed… carried it to the farthest corner under the puter table. Thot sure I was gonna have to crawl back there and get it.. I lucked out… No crawling, Lily ate the egg and there was no bad smell…

Or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/490030-LILYPUTZ-ON-THE-DRIVE

Still
working on the Amitron radio poll… I have now made a whole $3 in fresh, brand new one dollar bills… lolol

Marv is still grumping at me… Situation normal! Saw baby silk spiders sailing yesterday… rainbow lines in the sunlite…

I got another tick bite! Can you say: itchie? MORE itchie! Been using Benadryl gel but it ain’t a helping a whole lot…

At one time I believed ticks were useless critters but decided if they are here, then they must have a use.

Did I tell you that after a lot of pondering I came up with two uses for a tick? Sumfin in their saliva causes the skin to go numb at the bite. Can this be used to make shots etc painless? Also the contents of a mashed tick dry rapidly and are almost insoluble in water… a good paint stabilizer? And sumfin else but I just can’t member a couple of others that I thot of… My mind does wander… just in case you haven’t noticed.

I think I just made an understatement! Lololol

Take care all of mine… go in safety always. Remember to speak softly when approaching the storm gods and whatever you do, don’t tick them off!

Many hugs and much love… meems

2009*4*6  0920 edt   …. Mornin’, Bear…

OK, I swear to you, I must have a talk with the Weather god bosses at  Weather god Central!  That’s number one on my list today!  I think I am gonna complain!  (depends on who is on duty!)brb… getting act together far a verbal assault!  Lolol

It was a beautiful 79 deg here yesterday and now it is drizzling, breezy and 36 deg!  All I want to do is cover dive! Good sleeping weather… Oh yeah… just me and the 6 pack +.  I guess this is better than west of me is getting… snow and ice… but at the rate the temp is dropping we just might have some here..  snow and ice that is!  If it gets that cold it will freeze my quince!

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/509362-flowering-quince

1515 edt.  JC just left a few mins ago.  My electrician and friend.  Lolol  Gots to put up an outside lite and infra red cam on the east side of the house… Mr. A has been playing with the propane tank again… He also turned the faucet on at the rear of the house… Found that yesterday… well water pump could but didn’t burn out .  It could have run the well dry too.  I worry about the wasting of water … I need to have pix of Mr. A in the act in order to do anything about him…The nice thing is that the Propane Co will make/file the complaint.  I made my usual report to Richmond.. document document document!  Is all I can say or do.

UNLESS….Oh well, that’s wishful thinking on my part.  Any how, does anybody have any other ideas?  Would appreciate any clean suggestions as to what or how I can do something to prevent him from playing with the outside knobs on the propane tank… Am not allowed to put a lock on it.  Moving it will not change a thing and I must have it for a back up if the elec goes off.

Short shorts… LOLOL  Did you know that I am the 100,000th  person in Booneville to see this adv.  I am a WINNER!  “just click here”  lololol  Guess what?  Ain’t no 100,000 in all of Owsley county, let alone Booneville…More like 4,000 here in the county total!

Fido has moved down the holler and to the east… Butch came and got her yesterday afternoon…. I felt bad but she will have a boyfriend and a good home there.

And you guys are gonna love this one!  I wanted some ice for my pop… went to freezer… got out two trays of cubes. Picked up first tray.. gave it a twist… and promptly dumped the cubes into the cast iron skillet!  Is there something wrong with this picture?

I need to climb up on puter table and reset the atomic clock… it has switched itself back to the old time… instead of 1712 hours, it says 1612.  Uh huh!  Don’t know why I worry about the time… if I could just get the days right.  I misplace days all the time… once I even managed to lose a week… and trust me, that ain’t easy to do!  Would you believe I keep a written daily log?

Well, I think it’s almost nap time…

Go in safety dear hearts.. take care and always remember to not trust me when it comes to dates, times, days, months and passage of time.  With me, it’s always always a guesstimate!  Lololol

Now daggone it, I take a week off and all kinds of stuff happens!

Get in here and and grab some coffee or tea or sumfin… toasters over there… help selves then get your buns out here on the back porch! Beautiful day… Birds singing and playing. My flyguys up there playing… and here I sit doin’ my level best to stay out of trouble! Trust me, the staying out of trouble thing is not working! Not for me anyway! LOLOL

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/509363-The-new-pair

I
now have more mouths to feed… the rooster and the two geese… This lil feller is supposed to be a Banty rooster but I think he is a mix! Him has one hairy leg (Silky characteristic).. a three inch spur on the other leg. And his head is a mixture of Silky and Rhode Island Red…

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/509358-Banty-rooster

Anna gave me a gazillion cuttings… Jessie brot over a couple of saplings (according to her…the lady cannot count!) saplings turned into 6 persimmons and 7 or 8 white dog wood.

I’ve planted and dug and cussed and fussed and tried to stay out of the sun! When there’s not a shade tree on the property, staying out of the sun becomes a problem in logistics! Did I tell you that I failed Logic in kindergarden? And should I become logical at any given time, ya best be leaving the territory cause somebody’s in trouble!

Back to playing outside in the dirt… I’ve pulled ticks off the ol body… got hives and welts all over my legs… I must have gotten into a horde of chiggers while I was at it! LOLOL (I really need to live here in the mountains… city body/country mind! )

I am really cute again… Red welts, rest of me pale, blue outfit! LOLOL And I ITCH!! My sun burn has purty much healed but I am still peeling… OMG! With my kind of luck, I will win the Publishers Clearing House gazillion dollars… PCH will show up at my door with cams and mikes and brite lights and and… and there I’ll be… all puffy and itchy, hair not combed…Surprise!

Well you guys know the routine. Got the giggles at just the thot! Anna is trying to find a sunbonnet or pattern for me… Oh dear, I’m gonna find myself set back 250 years if I am not careful!

Well the day before April Fool, I had a problem with puter and my security system! After 2 ¾ hours on px with East Indian feller, we got it fixed… The lil feller is 21 years old… Has a degree in physics, a sense of humor, and has been to several places in Florida! I forgot to ask his shoe size tho.

I guess that’s enuf for the day… lolol Gots to get busy and water all the new plantings out there… I’m just positive I will trip over sumfin else that needs immediate treatment.. lolol

Take care all of mine…Go in safety always… Remember to be thankful I am not your next door neighbor… I just might be contagious! ROF!

2009*4*1 1145 edt….  Mornin’ Bear……

The following update on last nite’s  Speckled Sea Monster arrival from our roving reporter in Maui, HI….

Coconut Wireless to Emom’s Mountain News…Newsflash on BBB (Bamboo Bulletin Board) this p.m. read as follows. TUESDAY…Local Mountain Woman has just flashed readers. “Giant Specked Sea Monster has again been spotted in the Island City Creek area.” While frolicking…well stumbling…no crawling on the river bank several years back said LOMOWO, tanked up on Vanilla, managed to snap a photo of the creature. To top this…the amazing discovery of a river floating nest site egg was captured on film by same LOMOWO whose nose dive into the river made front page news. Will wonders never cease!

Submitted by the pondering emom for Rover Jasmin2 aka Donna

No comment from the editor about the flashing business!

Just got back in the house a few ago… Had to run (make that crawl) out to the mail box with one more item…

Them BBSB’s were a flying over the house… I ran back in house to grab coffee then back out to sit in the shade… Oh Yeah!  It’s a gorgeous fly day!  Contrails don’t last very long cause the air up there must be super dry!   Well, I got flashed and giggled and waved and threw kisses.  AND managed to spill the coffee all down the front of me.  LOLOL

Trust me, trying to keep hat on (to shade face), holding a cup of coffee in one hand .. a cigar in the other .. will put a crimp in your waving style!  Seems like I don’t juggle as well as I used to…(No old person remarks here please!)

For being off line this week, I’ve still managed to get into so much trouble!  Gots the giggles now.

I have more mouths to feed and no, it ain’t the kittens… lolol  How bout I have added a pair of adult geese and a banty rooster to my list of critters?

Well, I guess it was Monday afternoon… the phone rang and it was JL, the son of the guy from who I bought Greta (my stolen Great Pyrenese).  Did I want some geese.. adult geese?  Gonna have goslings ready in a few weeks? Sure, I reply, why not?  “meet you at 1800 at the two pumper”.

In the meantime, I discovered I had a problem on the puter… Some how, I managed to down load or get mixed up with IE8 beta which I did NOT want…

McAfee was telling me I had a problem… Repair screen was blank!  Well Ratz… IE8 and McAfee are not compatible…I couldn’t get rid of the IE8!  No matter how hard I tried!  Off to the old telephone!  Tearing my hair out as I went!

I finally ended up with a tech who knew what he was doing!  This trek thru the outer limits started at 1600 hours and went on for another 2 ¾  hours… Can you say: running late to pick up geese?

Well, the tech helped me remove IE7… this took care of IE8 also… then had to re-install IE7.  Got puter up and running finally… But discovered some things were missing including some friends, some addys, and a couple of downloads… Sheesh!  This was not fun. (even tho the Marv grumped and accused me of leading a life of leisure while he worked himself to death!)

Anyhow, if any of you have tried to contact me by pm or email and have not gotten a response or were blocked… let me know… send me an email at emom101@prtcnet.org   Anyway, my McAfee protection is now in full working order..

As I said, I ran late but went flying down the road to the two pumper… JL and I had missed each other…

Started home… Good neighbor was out and I stopped to talk.   Did I know anybody who had a white Pekin duck?  A female?  He, Butch, has a drake that is driving him crazy.

Well, I gave Fido to Butch, well, she’s still here but Butch is gonna come get her.  Butch gave me a little banty rooster… he looks like a Rhode Island Red.  Beautiful little critter!

BTW, I found out that Butch is one of mine… a marine… I gave him a hug… I think I startled him! Lolol

Well, while we were talking an old pickup comes up the road and stops.  Lolol  Driver is looking for Paula Rice… I pointed at Butch and said ‘ask him’ I’m new around here! ‘  and I cracked up!  Wish you’d a seen the look on Butch’s face!  LOLOL

Once all that got straightened out, Driver followed me home… I picked out the geese I wanted… and now have a pair of adults in the pen with the chickyducks and the Banty…lolol  Brought the Banty home in a freezer bag…lolol  I must be out of my mind!

I’ll try to get outside today to take some more pix… lolol  At least the sun is out…

Take care all of mine… go in safety always.  Remember that each day can be a winner and a laffer if you just look!  (Dodad, you behave!)

Hugs and much love to all … the getting knee deep in critters meems

2009*4*1

AN ALERT HAS BEEN POSTED FOR THE ISLAND CREEK AREA OF OWSLEY COUNTY KENTUCKY.

By Paula Rice, Manager/owner of EMOM’S MOUNTAIN NEWS

FLASH!

An automated alert just came through on the mountain telegraph system.

A giant Speckled Sea Monster has again been spotted in the Owsley County water-ways. To be exact, the Island City Creek area.

Although not as famous as the Loch Ness Monster, the Speckled Sea Monster has been an open secret here in the mountains of SouthEastern Kentucky for generations! Not a bird but possibly akin to the Swallows of Capistrano, She has never failed to arrive during the last week of March.

She, it is assumed the Monster is a she, always arrive during the nite time hours and first sighting reports usually come from late nite partiers on their way home during the wee hours of the morning.

Several years ago, this reporter had the good fortune to spot and photograph this lady of the wild as she hunted for a good nesting spot. The following is a file photo.

And
, wonder of wonders… one of the eggs assumed to be from the Lady Monster was found floating downstream from the latest nesting site.

2009*3*26 1408 edt… Mornin’ Bear…..

A HEADS UP! I’ve just started receiving strange emails from unfamiliar names. Subject matter is “WARNING”. When email is opened, it is a foreign (often filthy/obscene) version of English. Don’t know how dangerous this might be, but I delete these as soon as I see them… I also have my timer set on a 15 second delay for opening. This gives me time to see and allow me to get rid of it before the email shows as read.

And for any of you doubters out there, Spring has sprung! Tick season has arrived! Anybody know what them lil black poppy seed sized critters really are? Down here, they’ve always been called deer ticks but now I am hearing them called the ‘outsiders’ turkey mites. I’ve not been able to get the straight of it yet.

Time to get the Seven powder out and dust everything. Sheesh! Pondering here… wonder if Seven will get rid of the baddies on the net? Wouldn’t be that lucky!

or view link www.eons.com/photos/photo/340646

What
else… You’ve probably noticed I got a late start again today… Been out chasing men, standing on street corners, hanging in bars, lying a lot and generally getting into all kinds of trouble… lololol I also have a bridge to sell… a gold brick or two … or or or! Lolol

Newbie
in the sun and wind… one happy critter… lolol

The weather is just a roaring again…Storm Gods a playing! Had terrible winds up here yesterday and they have calmed some… we’ve had almost an inch and a half of rain and the Creek out back is full and just a singing! Just chilly enuf that I yearn to take a nap… maybe later… lolol Have wall to wall dogs… zonked out here in the apartment…Frogs are even quiet out back… Usually the frogs advertise between showers… No sounds out there but the creek.

Coffee is hot and tasty… fresh ground beans… Join in and help selves… Been having my usual breakfast … Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups… lololol

Jessie and I talked about going into town today… Well, we’ve decided that a nice toasty nap with our dogs sounds a lot more reasonable since it is chilly and wet… She has a nine pack… St. Gary, her hubby, puts up will all of us… Him is always kept busy polishing his halo… We might go to town tomorrow… Gonna sign up as a Notary Public again…

I was a NP a few years ago and let it lapse… Now I can see there is a need for one out here where I live… Oh well, being an NP again will fill in my spare time (all 10 seconds worth) and keep me from being bored. Yeah right!

I am outa here for now… Have a lot of stuff to get done… Rainy day is wash laundry day for me. Not that I want to; I’ve gotta! Lololol

Take care all of mine, go in safety always. Remember to look before you leap (in other words, don’t do as I do) lolol

It’s wet out; the 6 pack plus have decided to stay in! I think I am in trouble! Oh yeah, I AM in trouble here!

The Viva is full of energy this mornin and has been into almost everything… Sheesh… She’s wiped the kitchen table clean… dumped a couple of ash trays… shredded a roll of paper towels… Dragged a towel out of the bath room … was chewing on a plastic bag and shaking it … dead plastic bags still make noise, doncha know!

Then she and Max were wrestling doggie style out in the hall way… I got tickled at the two of them and the sounds they were making! Play growls and yips and weird noises! They seemed to enjoy it tho! And when I start laffing, they stopped and looked at me like I was the nut! Lolol

Managed to get a pic of a deer on the hillside the other day. I swear to you, there is a deer in the pic… I just can’t find it now and I know where to look!

Bad
news here… I received the paper work from the USDA. My heart sank! Two years ago, I died because of their outrageously bad paper work Truth so help me. I’ll tell you about my death on the anniversary which is coming up in April.

Anyway, there is a lot of work involved just to fill out the two sides of a single form. Letters to write and and and… However, I do have the info at hand.. Wish me luck here.

Y’all know I don’t do much cooking… I mean, I eat and everything but I don’t fix regular meals any longer. Well, Jessie stopped over the other day… and she brought me some home made spaghetti… Well, kids, it was scrumptious…. I had some late last nite…. Yummy yummy! Gonna have the left overs in a little bit… Breakfast!

Gonna go set on the back porch for a spell… everything is starting to bloom… all the trees that is… I love to listen to the rain falling… dancing on the roof and leaving fancy patterns in the pond…

Take care all of mine.. go in safety always. Remember to keep your powder and eyeliner dry! Lololol

Many hugs and much love… meems
