LATE RAINS
The crazed laugh of a hyena Echoed along the dried river bed Whilst a relentless burning sun Widened the pattern of deep cracks In the dull - red African ground Allowing a wide variety of insects Access to the damp soil below And an old battle scarred lion Sheltered in the shaded scrub Exhausted and waiting to die As the rains would come too late To save him and many others For only the strong survive Under Africa’s steely sky © peter Kelly

ON PARADE Bottle tops were toy soldiers Match boxes represented tanks There were battles and parades With red tops always the enemy Other colours were different Regiments For a child’s imagination has no boundaries Sometimes there were tears and devastation When the old man rolled home drunk And kicked them all over the floor Shouting they’re all dead now put them away But even an eight year old knows You can’t really kill a bottle top soldier © peter Kelly Copyright 2016
COLLECTION 15 SHORT POEMS With a rifle as his lover The young soldier slept On the cold sand of night And dreams passed him by …………………………… The wheel of fortune stopped turning And the bridesmaids wore black roses As the cosmic vows were broken By a jealous star that kissed the moon ……………………………….. An earthquake of icy forgetfulness Falling from an abdicating new moon Caught the fat cats and bankers With their golden guilt ridden hands Up Mona Lisa’s financial skirt ……………………………………. A rainbow running into the clouds Watched a clown a step down from sanity Collecting words to weave a phrase For the poet sitting under life’s toadstool ………………………………… Reflected in the poverty of the night The moon sailing on a lake not deep enough Was broken and swept onto a rocky shore As the singer sang of sponged love …………………………………….. Lucifer loaded the politician’s promises On the blood spattered train to hell And the remnants of humanity Were bruised with the pain of distrust ……………………………….. Cotton wool clouds drifted slowly Casting only brief dappled shadows On the broken dreams of Africa Whilst cruel dictator’s raged and ravished As Swiss bank accounts overflowed from corruption ………………………………………. When the sun has long gone The doll’s of Tinseltown Dance to every tune Of moon mad movie moguls ……………………………… Peter Kelly © copyright
DREAM ILLUSIONS Tread softly in the sands of dreams For the footprints we leave May well become memories Where time itself has no value Leaving us as free spirits Traversing the universe Waiting in purple limbo For a life of illusions To disperse in the mists of eternity

TATOOED STATUE Your love is a lone rose petal Preserved within a book Never seeing the sunshine No one allowed to look Your love is a partly melted mask Never in full view Prisoner of a second hand heart Waiting for Cinderella’s shoe Your love is as a distant star An unreachable far of sparkle Hiding in shadowy clouds A lonely unlit candle Your love is just a moonbeams kiss Fading well before the climax A tattooed statue waiting With memories sealed with wax I sit yearning for the sunshine When your love again takes flight There’ll be music playing in my soul As we dance throughout that night peter Kelly copyright 2016
ABDICATION
Winter came upon us like a thief at dead of night He cast a cloak of coldness and stole away our light Descending from a leaden sky in thinly veiled disguise Winter came upon us with evil in his eyes Winter came upon us like a creature on the prowl He monochromed the landscape and turned the weather foul Striking fear in every city with his paralyzing hold Winter moved among us like a wolf within the fold Then just as we’d become convinced that he was here to stay As suddenly as he’d arrived, winter went away Departing with the swiftness of an abdicating king Winter’s reign was over as he made the way for Spring peter Kelly

COME SPRINGTIME Pink champagne by candlelight And a table set for two There’s music playing softly Now all I need is you A single rose is waiting Red reflections in the light With words that say I love you In a poem that I’ll recite I make a toast to true love As a tear flows from my eyes My thoughts are happy memories Of a love that never dies Don’t know why you were taken So many years before your time I just wanted you to know that I’ll still love you come springtime. peter Kelly copyright 2011
DEAR SANTA Dear Santa, Before I lay me down to sleep, I ask for a man who’s not a creep, One who’s handsome smart and strong One who loves to listen long One who thinks before he speaks One who’ll call, not wait for weeks Let him please be suitably employed When I spend his cash – won’t be annoyed Pulls out my chair and opens the door Massages my back and doesn’t snore Oh give me a man who’ll make love to my mind Knows what to answer to “how big is my behind?†I ask for this man to love me to no end And always be my greatest friend Dear Santa, Before I lay me down to sleep I ask for a woman who’s not too deep One who’s beautiful and wise inside One who looks at me with pride One who doesn’t know it all Who’ll forgive me if I miss a call Let her please know how to cook Or at least can read it from a book No headaches that would help a lot And doesn’t ask for all I’ve got Oh give me a woman who relishes sport Who knows what it means when the score is nought I ask for a woman on who I can depend And will always be my very best friend SANTAS REPLY I am only Santa Claus you know Not the genie from the Alladin show I’d say Even if, for a year each day you pray A man who thinks before he speaks ! He’d be so old his body creaks A woman who doesn’t know it all ! Better give the morgue a call It’s miracles you’re asking for Just hang a stocking by the door Have some presents and a chocolate bar Your crazy dreams have gone too far A merry Christmas to you all Enjoy yourselves and have a ball ! COLLECTION 14 SHORT POEMS A gypsy selling dreams Turned guns into guitars Shells into love songs And hope flew across the sky ……………………………………. The last red rose of summer Said farewell to the sun And offered itself to a green moon As a cold mist bruised the night ………………………………… A falling dying meteor Vanished behind the curtain of time As a wave of moonlight Wore a cloak of a different style ……………………………………. The ghost of a soldier Alone on an unfamiliar road Beneath a burning marigold sun Floated on a leaf of memories ………………………………….. As the ocean tide turned A stranded three legged crab Made a final attempt to reach the sea As seagulls swept overhead – waiting ………………………………….. As the stars danced between the clouds The blue moon burst into a myriad of confetti Running wild with the song of the wind And hiding the dull edge of natures pains …………………………………. Debris falling from a shooting star Overwhelmed the trust dragons Who sucked the blood tinged milk From the casket of broken dreams ………………………………………. Decomposed grey relics emerged From the dusty rubble of life As a flock of black sheep Searched for the gate to freedom …………………………………….. peter Kelly copyright 2013
