This one's for Ms. Donna (jas2maui):

I thought Pippen was the only dog who did this when asked if he wants something he loves. Funny!

My 4th of July Report :)
Posted On 07/08/2009 12:35:17

Boy, go off for a few days and catching up is a full-time job! So here I am a day late and a dollar short (well, wish it was just a dollar but that IS the saying LOL) reporting on my 4th of July weekend.

My oldest son Tony called late last week and invited me to accompany him and his family (including three of my grandchildren..woo hoooo!! ) to Woodhaven Lakes Estates where he has a piece of property with an in-ground trailer home and a big lot with a firepit and lots of trees and loads of nature all around. It'a a good long drive (a couple of hours) but it was worth it. It was great to spend some quality time with the grandchildren I don't get to see as much.

My son loves to grill so we had some delicious meals. He even made a great breakfast of pancakes and sausage Saturday morning for all of us though not on the grill. I washed lots of dishes to help out while my daughter-in-law Chris tended to children. We had a campfire late Friday night. My son brought out his guitar and we enjoyed listening and singing along, too.
Seven year old Joshua found a little bitty frog, put it on his dad's shoulder and then, just as I took a picture, it jumped off, startled, I think, by the flash. The frog was never seen again. LOL Arianna is a very active and animated three year old young lady, and she always has something to say. Check her out in the slide show upside down in a chair. LOL

I had to bring along Pippen my dog, and Lego, my daughter's dog who has been living with me for a couple of years now. They cannot be trusted to stay around or even come when called if off-leash so they pretty much spent the weekend tethered to a door on the enclosed porch except for their "gotta go" walks. I kept telling them not to worry, that this was NOT how they were to spend the rest of their lives, that we WOULD go home where they would once again be free to come and go at will through their pet door and run free in the yard.

I had to watch movies with Joshua because that seemed to be his interest...movies such as The Incredible Hulk (the new one), Ben Ten (ever heard of him? another "made to sell toys" creation, as I see it LOL), etc. They certainly had a lot more violence than my 7 year olds used to be allowed to watch. *sigh* One year old Noah was sitting in his walker in front of the tv and Grandma (me) is saying, "Aren't you going to take him away from the tv before the movie starts??!!" Thankfully they did. But they were "bonding" moments with Joshua and I think he enjoyed sharing his interest with Grandma.

It rained most of the 4th so we caught an animal exhibit and small farmer's market on the grounds and then went out to the neighboring town to see if there were any garage sales (inside garages). We found a few. Woodhaven, for some odd reason, has no fireworks display on the 4th but they did have the usual Saturday night music concert. A 50's/60's/70's band played. We bought ice cream and then walked over to the pavilion and my grandchildren and I danced to the music. Great fun!

My son and my grandson love to fish so we had to stop for one last wetting of the lines on Sunday before leaving Woodhaven. The day before one small bluegill and a medium sized catfish were caught but they throw them back. Nothing was biting Sunday. My granddaughter Arianna and little Noah enjoyed the playground by the lake. I love the shot of my son Tony and Joshua fishing...so idyllic.

Well, that's the story of my weekend. Now enjoy it again in pictures:

I hope your weekend was fun, relaxing, or whatever you most wanted it to be!

Just a summer morning...
Posted On 07/01/2009 05:02:25

Good morning..if it's still morning where you are. I have twenty more minutes of morning so I can say that here where I am near Chicago. LOL I just thought I'd write about this and that today, nothing important.

The first "this" was finding my cup of coffee left from last night with a little surprise in it:

Though the poor little thing was still struggling to get free from the surface of the coffee, by the time I removed it, there wasn't much hope so I put it out of its misery. Such an exquisite little creature. Very sad.

Then the "that" was an adorable scene out my window. The feral cat with her kittens (now two) sitting on a high ledge in my neighbor's yard, waiting for the breakfast she puts out for them each day. I couldn't quite tell if the little ones were sleeping, but they looked so cute all lined up there behind Mama:

There have been a couple of male cats coming around, bothering the mama, so we may just have another set of kittens before long, who knows. *sigh* I recently read that the shelters are asking that we bring in the ferral cats to be spayed/neutered and then released again. They save money that way and the current consensus is that the ferrel cat community is valid and can do well if allowed to live outside as they have become accustomed. It's the continued over-population of stray cats that is the problem, so they are fixing them for free. They then clip just the tip of one ear so one knows when seeing a cat that's already been "done." Sounds fair all around to me. It has amazed me how these cats can live through the winters here, snow and freezing temps and all, but they seem to do fine. Here's another photo of babies and mama asleep one early morning:

She has been such a caring and loving mom, so attentive with her babies! It amazes me that an animal has these qualities by nature.

Just a short update about me and not smoking: I'm NOT smoking. That was for Active. I promised him I'd check in from time to time with an update. The urge to smoke has been quite strong lately, though. I eat now. *sigh* New addiction..yuck! Gotta get control of this one now. I may not look so good but at least I can breathe and no stinky cigarette smell!

Have a great rest of your week.

(Dang..it just turned afternoon. Oh, well... LOL)

The Age of Obituaries??
Posted On 06/25/2009 11:05:02

Gosh, this is depressing. Have we or at least I arrived at the age where there's more of interest in the obituaries than anywhere else? Ed McMahon died a few days ago and today Farrah Fawcett died and Michael Jackson was taken to the hospital this afternoon and may, as I type this, be pronounced dead [seems that has now been confirmed]. Ed was on the older side but Farrah died from anal cancer at a not so old age and Michael is definitely not of an age when one would expect a person to die. I guess we just need to live each day and know that there are no guarantees. It's still sad, though, to hear of these people who we grew up with or watched and listened to over the years, leaving this world.

I hope they were ready.

If It's Our Home..Then We Lend a Hand
Posted On 06/24/2009 08:57:29

As the pledge drive month here on Boomer nears its final days, I wanted to write something about MyBoomerPlace. But first I want to quote two people who recently made comments about what MyBoomerPlace means to them:

Easy, one of our long-time members, from one of his recent blogs:

“I blog because I like to write and wanted to tell a story of how my life evolved into what it is today. Isolation. Simplicity. Leukemia. And, a love of nature and the land. We have some extremely talented bloggers on boomer and we should be proud of this. We are a family here. Were not just a networking site I thought I joined about three years ago. Yup, journalism is alive and well but with a new face. One that smiles, offers a big hug or an atta boy in a comment. I love those comments......”

Just_Me, a newer member, from a comment on one of my recent blogs:

“Running behind, down a couple of days. Welcome back Gracie, this is one of the reasons I love it here. You all fit together, your love and respect you have for each other and you have woven yourself into a family. You support each other, when someone has something to say or write you all reply, it so much better having a conversation when someone is responding! Thank you Gracie and the rest here, you are all wonderful souls....Just Me”

And that is what MyBoomerPlace is to me as well. Can MySpace be anything like what we are here? I know I have never felt community on MySpace, but here it’s different. Maybe it’s different because we don’t have a corporation behind us, with big bucks and a bigger agenda. We have Tom and his set-up in his basement in a modest home in the countryside of Michigan just wanting to give us a safe and decent place to call our own.

Is it your own? Is here where you call “home” on the net? Have you considered helping support “your home”? Seems the right thing to do. I know we are so accustomed to “free everything” on the net. But most of that comes with some sort of advertising, flashing in our faces, disrupting our experience. Not here. And not even the poorest retiree (I live on S.S. disability for the most part so I am one of them) can say $2.99 a month would break him or her. Think about it. And a BIG thank you to everyone who has donated or signed up for a Gold Membership! Way to go!! Even though I have a membership, my donation will be forthcoming as soon as the check hits the bank in a few days. Promise! This is how we Boomers do things, hanging together, helping each other, each pulling our own weight, the old-fashioned way.

May you find your “home” here with us. Blessings!

Janet

The Banner Betsy Made
Author Unknown

We have nicknamed it "Old Glory"
As it floats upon the breeze,
Rich in legend, song and story
On the land and on the seas;
Far above the shining river,
Over mountain, glen and glade
With a fame that lives forever
Streams the banner Betsy made.

Once it went from her, its maker,
To the glory of the wars,
Once the modest little Quaker
Deftly studded it with stars;
And her fingers, swiftly flying
Through the sunshine and the shade,
Welded colors bright, undying,
In the banner Betsy made.

When at last her needle rested
And her cherished work was done
Went the banner, love invested,
To the camps of Washington;
And the glorious continentals
In the morning light arrayed
Stood in ragged regimentals
'Neath the banner Betsy made.

How they cheered it and its maker,
They the gallant sons of Mars,
How they blessed the little Quaker
And her flag of stripes and stars;
'Neath its folds, the foemen scorning,
Glinted bayonets and blade,
And the breezes of the morning
Kissed the banner Betsy made.

Years have passed, but still in glory
With a pride we love to see,
Laureled with a nation's glory
Waves the emblem of the free;
From the rugged pines of Northland
To the deep'ning everglade,
In the sunny heart of Southland
Floats the banner Betsy made.

A protector all have found it
And beneath it stands no slave,
Freemen brave have died around it
On the land and on the wave;
In the foremost front of battle
Borne by heroes not afraid,
'Mid the musket's rapid rattle,
Soared the banner Betsy made.

Now she sleeps whose fingers flying
With a heart to freedom true
Mingled colors bright, undying —
Fashioned stars and field of blue;
It will lack for no defenders
When the nation's foes invade,
For our country rose to splendor
'Neath the banner Betsy made.
