REMINDERS FROM GOD: Hebrews 11:6 (6) But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. New King James Version Change Bible versions Notice that Hebrews 11:6 reads, "he who comes to God," and I Peter 2:3-4 uses a similar phrase. "Coming to God" means that one approaches nearer to God, seeks Him, or he walks with Him. It signifies fellowship with Him. The Bible shows three stages of coming to God. The first is at God's calling when one begins to draw near. It results in justification and the imputing of Christ's righteousness. The second is more continuous, occurring during sanctification, as a person seeks to be like God, conform to His image, and have His laws written, engraved, into his character. The third stage occurs at the resurrection when the individual is glorified. John 6:44 clarifies our first coming to God: "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day." Nobody comes to God, no one seeks the God of the Bible, until he becomes aware of his need of Him. Nobody comes to God until he realizes he is far from Him and out of His favor—in fact, he is under God's condemnation and separated from the quality of life called in the Bible "eternal life." God reveals a measure of these things through His calling. The Parable of the Prodigal Son illustrates this (Luke 15:14-19). The son did not return or draw near to his father until he was aware of his need. This sense of need motivates us to seek God and draw near to Him. This sense of need is a gift of God's grace working on a person's mind and is initially given when God summons the individual to approach Him. Ephesians 4:17-24 covers the second coming to God: This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness on their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you have not so learned Christ. If indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Verse 30 adds an instructive, albeit sobering, thought: "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." The Holy Spirit mentioned here is God Himself, who is hurt, sorrowed, by our sinful neglect of His gift. Once He bestows this sense of need, it is a continuous impulse unless we stifle it by neglecting to follow through, as those in the book of Hebrews were doing. ********************* WORD FOR THE DAY: al·be·it /?l'bi?t/ [awl-bee-it] –conjunction although; even if: a peaceful, albeit brief retirement. even though late 14c., a contraction of al be it "al(though) it be." The pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the race again, and it won again. The local paper read: PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the pastor not to enter the donkey in another race. The next day, the local paper headline read: BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the pastor to get rid of the donkey. So the pastor decided to give it to a nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN. The bishop fainted. When he came to, he informed the nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey, so she sold it to a farmer for $10. The next day the paper read: NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10. This was too much for the bishop, so he ordered the nun to buy back the donkey and lead it to the plains where it could run wild. The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The bishop was buried the next day. The moral of the story is... Being concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery. . . Even shorten your life. So be yourself and enjoy life. His first words after stepping on the moon, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," were televised to earth and heard by millions. But just before he re-entered the lander, he made the enigmatic remark "Good luck, Mr. Gorsky". Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs. Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the 'Good luck, Mr. Gorsky' statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled. On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26- year-old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had died; so Neil Armstrong felt he could now answer the question. In 1938, when he was a kid in a small mid-western town, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit the ball, which landed in his neighbour’s yard by their bedroom window. His neighbours were Mr. and Mrs. Gorsky. As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky. "Sex! You want sex? You'll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!" True story!

QUILTING WITH A REGULAR SEWING MACHINE I grew up with quilting being done all around me. My Grandmother who I spent most of my youth with was a quilter. She taught me how to sew, so I could help her sew those tiny little pcs together. When I was old enough to cut out material, I was cutting out those blocks of material for her. She also made rugs out of material. No piece of clothing from the family went into the trash for she would cut it up into the proper size and into a quilt or a rug it would go. the zipper and buttons and any lace and trim went into a seperate box for a craft, or another garmet she would be asked to make. Grandma threw out nothing for there was always some thing down the line she would use it for. lol OBTW I still have some of those treasured items, lace, buttons, etc. and her old pedal sewing machine. Treasures of my childhood, Treasures of the past. I even have a quilt she made carefully saved in a air tight bag, and a quilt my mother made in another. This one she had embroderied spokewheels all over in a planned design and had embroderied the different families names inside them, and then different friends names in each of them. It won the State Fair in Columbus, Ohio exhibit the year she entered it. Just a piece of Meigs County Ohio History I have safely kept and proud of it. Maybe when I die it will get into the Meigs County History Museum as I have requested in my will. As well as the old photos I have that belong in the 1900's and has peoples names on it. Quilting. another part of the past, so much easier to run to the store and buy one, but not as much history in a quilt when it is made with your familys clothing. Mine has my grandparents, my deceased babys clothing/blanket in it, my parents and some of my clothing as a child, and some of my boys old shirts/jeans in it. . what a memory trip. I also have used my sewing machine to make a MEMORY QUILT out of photo graphs sewen together cloth with pictures on it, to tell a story. they can be hung up or just like a small lap blanket. HEY I just gave you all some idea for This years Home Made Christmas Present, you still have time to make one. . so get busy lol Blessings to all, and enjoy the website I am sharing below and the how to: &nbs from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit Are you wishing you owned a long arm quilting machine so you could quilt your own quilts? Have you priced a long arm machine and found it to be way way out of your reach? If so, then get a load of this cool quilting method! It's called "batting buddy", but you can do the same thing for free at home without purchasing the expensive templates that quilt shops want you to buy. The idea is to sew each quilt square as if you were foundation piecing. The only difference is that you'll be sewing each piece directly to the back of your quilt through the batting. Follow these instructions to learn how. Steps - Choose a simple block shape to sew. Diagonals work well, as do crazy quilt designs. Keep in mind that you'll be limited to straight sewn lines in your designs (as you would have in a foundation pieced block).
- You'll need two sizes of squares, one an inch (2.5cm) bigger all around than the other. The beauty of this is that you can do all of your cutting with a rotary cutter using your regular cutting rulers if you like. The large squares will be used for the backing fabric. The small squares will be used for your batting and top pieces. The squares used in this example were 7 inches (17.78cm) and 5 inches (12.7cm) square respectively, making the larger square two inches (5cm) longer per side.
- Center a batting square on the "wrong" side of your larger backing square. You're now ready to place the first block pieces on the top.
- Place the first block piece on the batting, face up. If you want adjacent blocks to line up exactly, make a cardboard "starting point" template to line up your first block with.
- Place the second block piece face down with the seam edges lined up with the first piece.
- Sew the seam. Sew it through both block pieces, through the batting, and through the backing, like a giant sandwich.
- Press the seam open and place the next block piece in the same manner, lining up the edges, sewing the seam, pressing open, until you reach the edges of the block. Stop each seam at the edge of the batting.
- Note: If you're using a poly batting, take care to press with a cool iron, as a hot iron will compress a poly batting. Cotton batting is best for this project.
- Turn the inch (2.5cm) wide, unquilted border section of the block sandwich under the block out of the way. Trim any fabric which protrudes past the batting edge. If you're careful, this can be done with your rotary cutter and a ruler as well.
- Repeat for all four sides. You have made one block. Create the rest, and then start to join them together as follows:
- Place two blocks backing side to backing side, with edges lined up. Feel carefully to ensure that the batting edges line up.
- Sew a seam down the inch (2.5cm) wide flap(s) just barely outside of the batting. Take care not to catch the batting into the seam, as this will make the finished seam bunch up.
- Press the seam open from both sides.
- From the front side, fold or roll the inch flaps under themselves and pin in place.
- Top stitch both of the folded edges down.
- Sew rows of blocks together in this manner.
- Sew the rows together, stitching the flap edges together, and then pressing them open and top stitching the entire row. The maximum length of fabric under the neck of your machine at any time will be 10-12 inches (25.4cm to 30.48cm); this is very manageable for a "regular" machine.
- Roll the outside edges over and top stitch to finish the edge.
- The back of the blocks will already be quilted. No need to go through the whole quilt frame and long arm rigamarole!
Video This video explains how to use the Martelli Stitch in the Ditch Binding Foot for top stitching and with a double needle to get a professional finish to your quilting and sewing projects. Tips - Use a table to the left of the machine to support the weight of the completed part of the quilt as you sew.
- This works best with thin batting, but thicker batting can be used if desired.
- So long as you sew blocks into strips, and then add the strips to your quilt one at a time, you will have no more than the width of one strip under your machine at one time.
Warnings - Pressing each seam open is essential for a good looking quilt.
- Poly type batting will compress and/or melt if your iron is too hot.
Things You'll Need - Fabric
- Scissors and/or rotary cutter and mat
- Sewing machine
- Quilt Batting, preferably cotton

**********************

REMINDERS FROM GOD: Jeremiah 31:31-34 (31) "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah— (32) not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD. (33) But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. (34) No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." The ultimate fulfillment of this process will culminate when we are completely composed of spirit, and God's law will be our first nature, not just second nature. But, while we are in an embryonic stage, the process has already begun in us, incrementally, as God gradually displaces our carnality and sin, replacing it with His Holy Spirit, leading to righteous behavior and godliness. Actually, no human being is completely converted, but many people are in various stages of conversion. Conversion, then, is a life-long process in which we move from a reactive approach to lawkeeping—motivated by rewards and punishments—to a proactive approach—motivated by a deeply placed inner desire to yield and comply to the law's principles, knowing intrinsically from experience that they work for the good and harmony of all. (Proactive is a term author-speaker Steven Covey uses to distinguish internal motivation to do or accomplish something as opposed to external motivation.) As the process of conversion begins, God must use carrots and sticks to keep us moving in the right direction. The blessings and curses of Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28 served as carrots and sticks to encourage righteous and godly behavior in our Israelite forebears. God uses carrots and sticks in the early part of our calling—for instance, the carrot of the Place of Safety and the stick of the Tribulation—and literally drives us into a frantic study of prophecy. Carrots and sticks have motivated our educational system in the forms of gold stars, grades, praise, trophies, extra homework, and detention. Recently, Dr. Alfie Kohn, in his book, Punished By Rewards, questions the long-term effects of external motivators, such as grades, financial incentives, gold stars, or tokens, to sustain learning behavior. He supplies some surprising evidence that carrots and sticks—reflecting the philosophy, "Do this and you'll get that"— actually become detrimental in the long run, diverting the focus away from the learning outcome onto the reward or punishment. Dr. Kohn, Dr. Jerome Bruner, and a host of other educators suggest that internal motivators, such as satisfying curiosity, imitating role models, and attaining competency, work better to motivate over the long term than do G.P.A.'s, scholarships and grants, and other external incentives. To illustrate this, one of the supreme tragedies in the music world occurred when the government of Finland supplied composer Jean Sibelius a guaranteed pension and a large mansion in the woods near Jarvenpaa. After this huge reward, an external motivation, not one musical idea—not one note!—emanated from his pen. Likewise, our spiritual growth and maturity will become stunted if our motivation for righteous behavior is externally determined rather than internally determined. To an individual truly endowed with God's Spirit, the laws cranked out yearly in Washington, DC, our state capitals, and our local city halls should strike us as juvenile and elementary—or as one minister would call it—knee-pants stuff. Consider the carrots and sticks used by lawmakers to control litter: up to $1,000 fine for littering, or a sign reading, "This segment of highway adopted by Yourtown Jaycees." These examples ignore the heart and core of the problem. Until the law gets from stone-tablet pages of the Scripture, or the statute books of a local, state, or federal assembly, into our hearts and minds—unless the motivation for doing what is right comes from the inside out—we are no more converted than a donkey. On second thought, a donkey at least behaves as it is programmed to act. ************************* WORD FOR THE DAY: misconstrue • miss-kun-STROO • verb : to understand or explain wrongly : misinterpret Example sentence: According to the candidate, her comments about the city's schools were misconstrued by the media. If you've ever wondered why dogs turn around several times before flopping down on the floor, the answer is simple genetics. They've been genetically programmed to trample their sleeping areas in the wild so that the grass is tamped down to make a comfortable resting place. Although your dog have the finest dog bed money can buy, he still feels the urge to circle before lying down, even in the comfort of the modern home. It's nature at work. Nature is the reason dogs gobble their food. The most successful survivors were able to eat fast before other members of the pack could grab a share. Wild dog cousins didn't know when his next meal would come, so being the fastest gorger was a real advantage. A fair question to ask is whether these innate traits will ever disappear? The answer is, only if we want them to. The natural evolution of dogs has been superseded by centuries of deliberate breeding. Dogs exhibiting strong retrieving instincts, high intelligence, and friendliness, for example, have been selectively bred with other dogs showing the same traits to create the retrievers of today. Likewise, undesirable traits can be bred out of dogs, if we so desire. Because there's no reason to eliminate the habit of turning around three times before lying down, dogs will probably keep making sure their doggy beds are tamped down to their satisfaction, even though the practice is now unnecessary. ************************ Some years ago, Stan married an attractive woman, Aggie, half his age, in a small coastal Newfoundland community. After several months, Aggie complained that she had never climaxed during sex and according to her Grandmother all Newfoundland women are entitled to a climax once in a while. To resolve the problem, they went to see the Veterinarian since there was no trustworthy doctor anywhere in Burin. The Vet didn't have a clue, but he did recall how, during the hot summer, his mother and father would fan a cow that was having difficulty breeding, with a big towel. This would cool her down and make her relax. He told them to hire a strong, virile young man to wave a big towel over them while they were having sex. This, the Vet said, would cause the young wife to cool down, relax, then climax. The couple hired a strong young man from St. Lawrence to wave that big towel over them as the Vet suggested. After many efforts, Aggie still had not climaxed so they went back to the Vet. The Vet said for Aggie to change partners and let the young man have sex with her while Stan waved the big towel. They tried it that night and Aggie went into wild, screaming, ear-splitting climaxes, one right after the other for about two and a half hours. When it was over, Stan looked down at the exhausted young man and in a boasting voice said: "And that, me son, is how ya waves a fockin' towel!" ************************ THE HEART ATTACK A blonde gets home from work early & hears strange noises coming from the bedroom. The porcupines, realizing the situation, decided to group together to keep warm. This way they covered and protected themselves; but the quills of each one wounded their closest companions. After awhile, they decided to distance themselves one from the other and they began to die, alone and frozen. So they had to make a choice: either accept the quills of their companions or disappear from the Earth. Wisely, they decided to go back to being together. They learned to live with the little wounds caused by the close relationship with their companions in order to receive the heat that came from the others. This way they were able to survive. Moral of the story: The best relationship is not the one that brings together perfect people, but when each individual learns to live with the imperfections of others and can admire the other person's good qualities. Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, 'The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.' He continued, 'And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, As the burden becomes increasingly heavy, We won't be able to carry on. ' 'As with the glass of water, You have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.' 'So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, Let them down for a moment if you can.' So, my friend, Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while. Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life: * Accept that some days you're the pigeon, And some days you're the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, Just in case you have to eat them. * Always wear stuff that will make you look good If you die in the middle of it. * Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be "Recalled" by their maker. * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, It was probably worth it. * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, Because then you won't have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. * When everything's coming your way, You're in the wrong lane. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, But you may also be the world to one person. * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. * We could learn a lot from crayons... "Wonderful things are happening. Do not limit Me. The way will unfold." Our Daily Devotional: Got a Light? John 1:9-12: NIV: The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. We who are called born again, are the bearers of the true light; and we are, as John, the ones who bear witness of that light. We are His very own?bought with a price. Such as we are now His, the evidence of His light should be visible within our faces, our actions, and our lifestyles. But the light of Christ in us sometimes seems a dimly lit flicker. His Light "shines in the darkness." Does our light shine in the darkness? "The world did not recognize him." Does the world recognize us? Are we characterized as any lost person in this world, or is there a difference that sets us apart as children of the true Light? It is uncomfortable to be light in darkness, but our comfort is not what is important. It is uncomfortable for us to be light when it keeps us from being accepted by others, but which is more important?to be accepted, or to see others accept Jesus because of His Light in us? And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. - John 10:16 **************************** Vocabulary Word for the Day: precentorprih-SEN-ter DEFINITION noun : a leader of the singing of a choir or congregation EXAMPLESHe was deeply devoted to our congregation, and served as precentor at the church for the last 20 years of his life. The history of "precentor" leads to the Latin verb "praecinere," meaning "to lead in singing," which was formed by adding the "prae-" prefix to the verb "canere" ("to sing"). "Canere" is also an ancestor of the English word "chant," as well as the source of the Latin noun "cantor," which was also borrowed into English and is used both as a synonym of "precentor" and for an individual in a synagogue who sings or chants the liturgical music and leads the congregation in prayer. **************************** CONFUCIOUS QUOTE: I will not be concerned at other men's not knowing me;I will be concerned at my own want of ability. Learning the proper steps on how to make pumpkin pie from scratch is well worth the effort, for no shortcut method can match the flavor and texture of homemade pumpkin pie. Described below are the necessary steps for making a traditional pumpkin pie from scratch using homemade pumpkin puree (rather than using canned pumpkin puree or a pumpkin pie mix). The homemade puree can be used for preparing most any pumpkin dessert recipe, as well as in pumpkin cakes, pumpkin bars, and pumpkin bread recipes calling for fresh or canned pumpkin puree is an ingredient. Selecting the Pumpkin When selecting a pumpkin for making a homemade pumpkin pie, be sure to choose a small pumpkin that is a variety specifically grown for eating, such as sugar, cheese, or milk pumpkins. They may also be called pie pumpkins and generally weigh from 2 to 4 pounds. Do not select the Jack-O-Lantern variety, which is not as sweet and has flesh that is tough and stringy. Select one that has good orange coloring and is heavy for its size. It should be firm, free of blemishes and have its stem intact. Pie pumpkins will yield approximately 1 cup of puree per pound of pumpkin. Once the pumpkin has been purchased, it can be stored in a cool, dry area for approximately a month. Do not store in temperatures below 50°F. Do not refrigerate fresh pumpkins or wrap in plastic. Pumpkin Preparation Wash the exterior of the pumpkin with cool water to remove any dirt and debris from the outer surface. Remove the stem from the pumpkin and cut the pumpkin in half lengthwise. Scrape out the seeds and stringy fibers from the center of the pumpkin using a metal spoon. Discard the stringy fibers and if preferred, the seeds can be saved to make roasted pumpkin seeds. Leave the pumpkin in halves or cut into quarters if desired. Preparing Homemade Pumpkin Puree Preheat the oven to 350°F. Coat the cut surface of the pumpkin halves with vegetable oil. Place pumpkin halves cut side done in a roasting pan. Add 1 cup of water to the pan. Place the pumpkin in the preheated oven and bake for 60 to 90 minutes. The pumpkin should be baked until the flesh is very tender. Poke with a fork to check for doneness. Note: The pumpkin halves can also be cooked in the microwave. Place the halves in a microwave-safe dish, add 1 cup of water and cover. To fit properly in the microwave- safe dish, the halves may have to be cut into smaller pieces. Place in the microwave oven and cook on high for 15 minutes. Test for doneness by poking with a fork. If not completely tender, return to the microwave and continue to cook for 5 minute intervals, checking tenderness after each interval. When the pumpkin has cooked to proper tenderness, remove from the oven and place on a cutting board or cooling rack. Allow to cool until it can be handled comfortably. Scrape the flesh out of the pumpkin halves and discard the skins. Place pumpkin flesh in a large bowl. Mash the pumpkin by hand using a potato masher. Mash until all the pumpkin is a smooth consistency. Another method that can be used to puree the pumpkin is to mix it with a hand mixer. A blender or food processor can also be used. Drain moisture from the puree by placing it in a sieve lined with paper towels or a double layer of coffee filters. Be sure the sieve is placed in a bowl to catch the liquid as it drains from the pureed pumpkin. Cover the puree with plastic wrap. Place in the refrigerator and allow puree to drain for at least 2 hours. Drain overnight if possible. After draining, the puree should be about the same consistency as commercially canned pumpkin and can be used in any pumpkin recipe calling for canned pumpkin. If the puree will not be used immediately, place it in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 24 hours. For longer storage, freeze the puree in measured quantities. Mark the container with the date, contents and quantity. Freeze up to 3 months. Making Homemade Pumpkin Pie The recipe below is for a traditional pumpkin pie. The pumpkin puree can also be used in any pumpkin recipe calling for commercially canned pumpkin. A 15 oz. can of pumpkin is equal to 1 3/4 cups of pumpkin puree. Traditional Homemade Pumpkin Pie Ingredients: 1 single pie crust, 9 inch 1 1/2 c. pumpkin puree 1 1/2 c. heavy cream 1/2 c. brown sugar 1 tbsp. flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 c. light corn syrup 3 eggs, beaten 1 tsp. vanilla whipped cream for serving Have the single 9-inch pie crust prepared and chilled. Preheat oven to 350°F. Combine flour in with the brown sugar and stir until they are evenly distributed. Add the brown sugar and flour mixture to the pumpkin puree and heavy cream. Beat until well blended. Add the salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Stir into pumpkin mixture. Add corn syrup and beat until well blended. Add the beaten eggs and vanilla to the mixture. Beat the eggs and vanilla into the mixture until thoroughly mixed. Pour pumpkin filling into the unbaked pie shell. Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 50 to 60 minutes. Check after 30 minutes to see if it looks like the crust is going to brown too much. If so, place a piece of foil over the pie. Remove the foil for the last 10 minutes of baking time so crust will finish browning. To check for doneness, insert the tip of a table knife in about 1 inch from the center of the pie. The knife will come out clean if the pie is done. Or, gently shake the pie and if about an inch of the center jiggles a little, the pie is done. The center will set from the heat of the pie after it is removed from the oven. If more than just the center jiggles, continue to cook and check for doneness at 5 minute intervals. When the homemade pumpkin pie is done, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool completely before serving. Serve with a spoonful of whipped cream on each slice. ****************** Storing Pumpkin Pie Refrigerate: Whole and leftover homemade pumpkin pie should be stored in the refrigerator. Allow the pie to cool completely (approximately 2 hours) and then cover with plastic or place in an airtight container. The pie can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freezing: It is not recommended to freeze baked pumpkin pies. Freezing can affect the quality of the pie, causing it to become watery when thawed. The filling can become heavy and no longer have a custard-like texture. It would be better to freeze the pie crust and the homemade pumpkin puree separately and then preparing the pie just before it is needed. Thaw pie crust and puree in the refrigerator. ********************************************* Honey Baked Ham with Cloves Ingredients - 1 cup honey - 1/3 cup butter - 3 tablespoons dark corn syrup - 3/4 teaspoon dry mustard (high quality) - 2 tablespoons orange juice - 1/4 cup whole cloves - 1 ham of choice DIRECTIONS Score ham with a sharp knife in a diagonal pattern. Repeat scoring, diagonally, in the opposite direction to create a crossing pattern. Insert whole cloves at the crossings. Preheat oven to 325° F. Place ham in roasting pan fat side up; the melting fat will baste your ham. Turn ham over half way through baking to avoid uneven salting from the brine in the meat. If roasting a ham that is not precooked, bake for approximately 20-30 minutes per pound. If the ham is precooked, follow the label directions for cooking times. While ham is roasting, combine all ingredients in a small sauce pan. Cook over medium heat and bring to a full boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and cook one minute. Remove ham from oven prior to the last 30 minutes of baking. Cover ham with glaze. Glaze ham every 10 minutes during last 30 minutes of baking. Serve remaining glaze with ham. Tip: Baste ham with pan drippings while glazing. ********************************************* HOW TO COOK A TURKEY Deciding how to cook a turkey can be difficult, especially with all the options that are available. Here you will find a listing of different ways to enjoy cooking a turkey. Deep Frying Turkey The optimum cooking temperature for deep-frying the turkey is 350ºF. When the turkey is placed into the hot oil, the temperature will drop rapidly; therefore, it is important to preheat the oil to 375°F so that less time is required to restore the oil to the proper cooking temperature. When the temperature of the oil has returned to a range of 325° to 350°F, the cooking process should be timed. The cooking time is figured as 3 minutes per pound plus 5 minutes. Be sure to monitor the temperature of the oil throughout the cooking process, increasing or decreasing the heat when necessary. It is important that the temperature of the oil remains near 350ºF for proper cooking. Do not allow the temperature to drop below 325ºF because if the oil is cooler than this, the turkey will not cook properly and it may soak up too much oil. If the temperature of the oil is excessively high, the exterior of the turkey will burn before the interior is cooked thoroughly. Keep in mind that many oils have a flash point of 425°F, which if reached, increases the risk of fire. When the turkey is fully cooked, it will float and the exterior will be nicely browned. While wearing long oven mitts, attach the lifting hook to the basket handle or the loop on the turkey stand, and slowly lift the turkey from the hot oil. Allow the basket to hover over the top of the cooker so that some of the oil will drain from the turkey into the pot. It may be necessary for two people to lift the turkey and hold it over the top of the cooker while the oil drains from the turkey. Some turkey deep-fryer models include a clip attachment on the rim of the pot that allows the basket to be attached to the rim, eliminating the need for the basket to be manually held over the surface of the cooker for drainage. When using a propane gas cooker, the burner must be switched off before removing the turkey. The turkey must be checked for proper doneness using a meat thermometer. The breast should reach 170°F and the thigh should reach 180°F. If the turkey is not done, return it to the hot oil and cook it for an additional 5 minutes. After the turkey is removed from the cooker and the oil has been drained from the bird, place the basket or turkey stand on the baking sheet or pan that was previously lined with newspaper or paper towels so that additional oil may be drained. Leave the turkey in the basket and wrap it loosely with foil. Allow it to rest for at least 15 minutes before carving. The resting period allows the juices to be reabsorbed back into the meat. After the resting period, remove the turkey from the basket or turkey stand, then carve it and serve. Roasting a Turkey Roast the turkey uncovered at a temperature ranging from 325°F to 350°F. Higher temperatures may cause the meat to dry out, but this is preferable to temperatures that are too low which may not allow the interior of the turkey to cook to a safe temperature. Some cooks prefer to roast the turkey at temperatures as high as 450°F to 500°F for the first 30 minutes in order to brown the surface. The heat is then reduce to 325°F for the remainder of the cooking time. It is important to keep the oven door closed as much as possible while the turkey is roasting to maintain a constant temperature within the oven. Basting a turkey provides a crispy, golden skin, but it does not add moisture or flavor to the interior of the turkey. Basting should be kept to a minimum so that the oven door is not opened too often. The more times the oven door is opened, the longer the cooking time will be because of heat loss within the oven. Aluminum foil can be tented over the turkey near the end of the cooking time to keep the skin from becoming too brown. Use a meat thermometer to determine the proper doneness, which is at least 170°F for the breast and 180°F for the thigh. After removing the turkey from the oven, the temperature of the meat will increase by about 5° as the turkey rests. It is important that the turkey is not overcooked, because the breast meat may dry out quickly. After the turkey is removed from the oven and before the turkey is carved, allow it to rest at least 20 minutes so that the juices settle within the meat, which provides the meat with more flavor and tenderness and will also make carving much easier. More or less time may be allotted depending on the size of the turkey. Large lifting forks, such as those shown in the picture at the right, should be used to remove the turkey from the roasting pan. After the turkey is placed on a large, clean cutting board, it should be tented with aluminum foil to retain heat while it is resting. Click here for complete instructions on How to Roast a Turkey. Grilling Turkey The purpose of indirect heat cooking on a grill is to allow whole turkeys or thick pieces of turkey to cook thoroughly while preventing the surface of the meat from burning. Indirect heat cooking is often done in conjunction with direct heat cooking. Large turkey pieces can be seared over direct heat and then the cooking process is finished using indirect heat to slowly cook the meat to the correct doneness. Removing the skin from the whole turkey or individual pieces before grilling increases the risk of the meat becoming too dry. The skin provides protection against excess moisture loss so it is best to leave the skin on during grilling and it can then be removed before serving. If the skin must be removed before grilling, the surface of the meat can be brushed with some olive oil to help keep it moist. When selecting a whole turkey for indirect grilling, it is best to choose one that is not too large. A 16-pound turkey is the largest size that is safe to grill. The grilling process does not raise the internal temperature of larger turkeys quickly enough to destroy harmful bacteria within a safe time period. A smaller turkey is also easier to handle when moving and turning it on the grilling surface. Allow 15 to 20 minutes cooking time per pound when using a covered grill. A meat thermometer should be used to make sure the internal temperature of the turkey reaches the proper degree of doneness. Indirect Heat Grilling on Charcoal Grills When grilling with indirect heat on a charcoal grill, the coals can be pushed to one side of the grill and a pan is placed on the opposite side. The pan is used to catch fat as it melts and drips from the meat as it cooks, reducing flare-ups. Turkey meat (pieces or whole) is placed on the section of the grill that is above the drip pan and away from the coals. Alternate methods for arranging the coals include pushing half the coals to one side of the grill and the other half to the opposite side with the drip pan placed in between or the coals can be placed in a ring, surrounding the drip pan. The grill is covered and the turkey is cooked to the appropriate doneness ********************************************* Grandma Curtis's Holiday Salad 1 16 oz sm curd cottage cheese 1 16 oz cool whip 1 sm pk french vanilla instant pudding 1 14 oz can of pineapple tidbits 1 10 oz can of mandarian oranges mix coolwhip, pudding thoroughly, add the cottage cheese, drain juices off of the pineapple and oranges and add the fruit. mix gently til completly mixed. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box. *A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery ............on a detour ! A man with a bald head and a wooden leg is invited to a Xmas fancy dress party. He doesn't know what to wear to hide his head and his wooden leg, so he writes to a fancy dress company to explain his problem. A few days later he receives a parcel with a note: Dear Sir, Please find enclosed a Pirate's outfit. The spotted handkerchief will cover your bald head and with your wooden leg you will be just right as a Pirate. The man is offended that the outfit emphasizes his disability, so he writes a letter of complaint. A week passes and he receives another parcel and note: Dear Sir, Sorry about the previous parcel. Please find enclosed a monk's habit. The long robe will cover your wooden leg and with your bald head you will really look the part. The man is really incandescent with rage now, because the company has gone from emphasizing his wooden leg to drawing attention to his bald head. So he writes a really strong letter of complaint. A few days later he gets a very small parcel from the company with the accompanying letter: Dear Sir, Please find enclosed a tin of Golden Syrup. We suggest you pour the tin of Golden Syrup over your bald head, stick your wooden leg up your arse and go as a toffee apple. ********************************************* Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes with Applesauce Prep Time 15 Minutes Total Time 8:15 Hrs Mins Makes 6 servings Your slow cooker can be a lifesaver during holiday meals when sweet potatoes are a must and the oven is stuffed with turkey or ham and other fixings. Success Many varieties of sweet potatoes are available, but a true yam is not available in our supermarkets. The variety of sweet potatoes with dark orange skin is often labeled as “yams.†The very light-colored sweet potatoes are not as sweet and are drier than the darker-skin ones. We like the darker-skin sweet potatoes (or “yamsâ€) for this dish because they not only make a richer-colored dish but also a tastier, sweeter one. Of a war that he once fought in And the deeds that he had done, In his exploits with his buddies; They were heroes, every one. And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors His tales became a joke, All his buddies listened quietly For they knew whereof he spoke. But we'll hear his tales no longer, For old Bob has passed away, And the world's a little poorer For a Soldier died today. He won't be mourned by many, Just his children and his wife. For he lived an ordinary, Very quiet sort of life. He held a job and raised a family, Going quietly on his way; And the world won't note his passing, Tho a Soldier died today. When politicians leave this earth, Their bodies lie in state. While thousands note their passing, And proclaim that they were great. Papers tell of their life stories From the time that they were young. But the passing of a Soldier Goes unnoticed, and unsung. Is the greatest contribution To the welfare of our land, Someone who breaks his promise And cons his fellow man? Or the ordinary fellow Who in times of war and strife, Goes off to serve his country And offers up his life? The politician’s stipend And the style in which he lives, Are often disproportionate, To the service that he gives. While the ordinary Soldier, Who offered up his all, Is paid off with a medal And perhaps a pension, though small. It is not the politicians With their compromise and ploys, Who won for us the freedom That our country now enjoys. Should you find yourself in danger, With your enemies at hand, Would you really want some cop-out, With his ever waffling stand? Or would you want a Soldier-- His home, his country, his kin, Just a common Soldier, Who would fight until the end? He was just a common Soldier, And his ranks are growing thin, But his presence should remind us We may need his like again. For when countries are in conflict, We find the Soldier's part, Is to clean up all the troubles That the politicians start. If we cannot do him honor While he's here to hear the praise, Then at least let's give him homage At the ending of his days. Perhaps just a simple headline In the paper that might say: "OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A SOLDIER DIED TODAY." Patriotism – Pass it on! YOU can make a difference!!!

REMINDERS FROM GOD: Joshua 24:15 “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.†If Jesus Came to Your House "Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord."1 "If Jesus came to your house to spend a day or two, If He came unexpectedly, I wonder what you'd do. Oh, I know you'd give your nicest Room to such an honored Guest, And all the food you'd serve to Him would be the very best, And you would keep assuring Him you're glad to have Him there—That serving Him in your home is joy beyond compare. But when you saw Him coming would you meet Him at the door, With arms outstretched in welcome to your Heavenly Visitor? Or would you have to change your clothes before you let Him in, Or hide some magazines and put the Bibles where they'd been? Would you turn off the radio and hope He hadn't heard, And wish you hadn't uttered that last, loud, hasty word? Would you hide your worldly music and put some hymn books out? Could you let Jesus walk right in, or would you rush about? And I wonder … if the Savior spent a day or two with you, Would you go right on doing the things you always do? Would you keep right on saying the things you always say? Would life for you continue as it does from day to day? Would your family conversation keep up its usual pace, And would you find it hard each meal to say a table grace? Would you sing the songs you always sing and read the books you read, And let Him know the things on which your mind and spirit feed? Would you take Jesus with you everywhere you'd planned to go? Or would you maybe change your plans for just a day or so? Would you be glad to have Him meet your very closest friends, Or would you hope they'd stay away until His visit ends? Would you be glad to have Him stay forever on and on, Or would you sigh with great relief when He at last was gone? It might be interesting to know the things that you would do If Jesus came in person to spend some time with you." – Author Unknown Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to become more and more Like Jesus in every way so that my life, and the way I live, will always reflect his glory. It is unique in design and far more efficient. Because of this fact, their sensitivity to pollutants in the air is heightened and can cause them suffering and death long before we would ourselves be affected. We have all heard the stories about the canaries used in coal mines back in the day. Miners would place a cage of canaries in the mines. This was to determine if there were emissions of natural gases, which are odorless, present in that shaft. If they returned and the canaries were dead, they knew that they would soon fall victim as well. While a bird has slower respiration than that of mammals of similar size, it takes two inhalations to complete one respiratory cycle, which in a toxic situation puts them doubly at risk as illustrated above. Whenever you smell an odor, it is because there are particulates wafting through the air. Some, of course, are harmful while others are not. There is a quick and easy test you can do to see how heavy the particulates are in your house at certain times. Simply turn off your lights and turn on a flashlight. Whatever is in the air, whether it be smoke or dust particles, will be visible. The following list, while incomplete, is of the hazards you should be most aware of: Teflon/non-stick cookware: Please read this article. This cookware kills so many birds that manufacturers have just now starting issuing warnings. Teflon coatings exist in the strangest places: hair dryers, irons, portable heaters, and interior oven and toaster oven surfaces. The self cleaning feature on your oven utilizes non stick coatings. Don’t use it! Be very sure to contact manufacturers before buying a product, particularly if there is heat involved. Carbon monoxide: This is emitted by many common appliances in our homes, but usually to small degrees. Carbon monoxide detectors are cheap, and essential. The fumes emitted from vehicles in a closed area recently took the life of Fiji, the Womach’s beloved toucan. Smoke/incense: Problems are usually a result of poorly ventilated fireplaces and wood burning stoves. If you have concerns about ventilation, use the flashlight test. Though incense throws a smaller amount of smoke into the air, it is thick and it is smoke. Cigarette smoke: This article tells the whole story of the dangers of second hand smoke. Cooking smoke: Burning oil and foods will throw a dangerous amount of smoke into the air. Aerosol/pump sprays: Many people are aware of the dangers of aerosol sprays, but for some reason think regular pump action sprays are safe. This is not true. Aerosols are thrown into the air in a fine mist. The particulates are smaller, but spread farther because of the force of the compression in the can. The particulates coming from a pump bottle don’t travel as far, but are larger in size. Both are hazardous. Hair products are of particular concern, as are cleaning products and oven cleaners. Febreze killed yet another bird recently as reported by a friend. Just because something smells pleasant, doesn’t mean it’s safe. Fuel burning products: Keep anything that burns fuel to operate or generate heat or light, or any other purpose it serves, far, far away from your birds. The oily smoke they emit is deadly. They also emit carbon monoxide in dangerous amounts as the fuel burns low. Scented candles: These are oil based candles and emit toxic fumes just like a fuel burning product. Ozone emitting air purifiers: While ozone is great for disintegrating air borne chemicals, it is dangerous with continual use for your birds and family. I had two Sharper Image Ionic Breezes that I had to toss out several years ago when this information became known. Powders: This is not something you typically think of as air borne, but powdered cleaning products, such as products you sprinkle on your carpet, allows chemical particulates to enter the air. They are also dangerous for a bird to walk around on. Your bird’s air space should be pristine. I promise you don’t want to experience the horror of watching your bird die from this easily avoided kind of toxicity. In most cases it is gruesome. Please speak up if you have something to add to this list and be sure to post your experiences so that we may all learn from them. That is what this blog is for. **************************** CHILI SPAGHETTI Prep Time 30 mins Total Time 30 mins Makes 4 servings 12 oz. uncooked spaghetti or vermicelli 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup) 1 (15-oz.) can spicy chili beans, undrained 1 (14 1/2-oz.) can diced tomatoes with green chiles, undrained 1 (8-oz.) can tomato sauce 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon cumin 2 oz. Bake at 375° for 35 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown. Serve hot with cream or ice cream. Makes about 1 dozen apple dumplings. ****************************** A Few More Things To Ponder About... 1. "Will You Be My Friend?" by James Kavanaugh Will you be my friend? There are so many reasons why you never should: I'm sometimes sullen, often shy, acutely sensitive, My fear erupts as anger, I find it hard to give, I talk about myself when I'm afraid And often spend a day without anything to say. But I will make you laugh And love you quite a bit And hold you when you're sad. I cry a little almost everyday Because I'm more caring than the strangers ever know, And, if at times, I show my tender side (The soft and warmer part I hide) I wonder, Will you be my friend? A friend Who far beyond the feebleness of any vow or tie Will touch the secret place where I am really I, To know the pain of lips that plead and eyes that weep, Who will not run away when you find me in the street Alone and lying mangled by my quota of defeats But will stop and stay - to tell me of another day When I was beautiful. Will you be my friend? There are so many reasons why you never should: Often I'm too serious, seldom predictably the same, Sometimes cold and distant, probably I'll always change. I bluster and brag, seek attention like a child, I brood and out, my anger can be wild, But I will make you laugh And love you quite a bit And be near you when you're afraid. I shake a little almost everyday Because I'm more frightened than the strangers ever know And if at times I show my trembling side (The anxious, fearful part I hide) I wonder, Will you be my friend? A friend Who, when I fear your closeness, feels me push away and Stubbornly will stay to share what's left on such a day, Who, when no one knows my name or calls me On the phone When there's no concern for me - what I have Or haven't done - And those I've helped and counted on have, Oh so deftly, run, Who, when there's nothing left but me, Stripped of charm and subtlety, Will nonetheless remain. Will you be my friend? For no reason that I know Except I want you so.

REMINDERS FROM GOD: "Each day do something to lift up another soul. Provide the helping hand to raise another to courage, faith, and health." -- GOD Our Daily Devotional: Transformation 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! Coming into the transforming presence of God is something that will open our eyes to a great many things. Drawing near to Him will guarantee that we will begin to rethink the way we think, and question the way we have always considered things to be. We progress forward toward Him until we face areas we may be unwilling to give up, or that we are not wanting to consider changing. It´s then that we shelter our eyes from His light as He reveals truth that we choose not to see. The painful reality is most painful to our flesh. Our flesh chooses to cling to that which is loved in the flesh--those things that are of this earth which bring to us a sense of security and comfort. Our flesh is unwilling to part with such things or even to consider doing so. It is not until we can willingly deny ourselves and selfish nature, that we will move forward toward God. It is not until we are willing to abandon all we have ever treasured, believed or thought we knew, that we will truly "throw off everything that hinders" so that we can fully come into the transforming presence of our Lord. Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? - Psalm 24:3 ************************** WORD FOR THE DAY: eventuate • ih-VEN-chuh-wayt • verb : to come out finally : result, come about Example sentence: No one could have prepared for the chaos that eventuated when the truth finally came to light. "The incident … occurred at a time of growing concern about the role of Internet chat rooms and other forums in giving a platform to disturbed young people with resentments that eventuate in attacks on schools and other targets." -- From an article by John F. Burns in The New York Times , March 21, 2009 Did you know? "Eventuate" started life as an Americanism in the late 18th century, and was stigmatized in the 19th century. A British commentator called it "another horrible word, which is fast getting into our language through the provincial press." Other British grammarians, and even some Americans, agreed that it was horrible. **************************** Salsa Chicken and Rice Casserole Prep Time 15 Minutes Total Time 2:15 Hrs:Mins Makes 5 servings You can have this six-ingredient meal in the oven in 15 minutes! It's a Southwestern twist on an old standby. 1 can (10 oz) Old El Paso enchilada sauce 1 cup uncooked converted white rice 1 cup Old El Paso Thick 'n Chunky salsa 2 cans (10 3/4 oz each) condensed cream of celery soup 1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained, rinsed 5 bone-in chicken breast halves with skin Heat oven to 325°F. Spray 13x9-inch (3-quart) glass baking dish with cooking spray. Reserve 2 tablespoons enchilada sauce for brushing on chicken. In large bowl, mix remaining enchilada sauce, the uncooked rice, salsa, soup and beans; pour into baking dish. Arrange chicken, skin side up, over rice mixture. Cover tightly with foil. Bake 1 hour. Uncover; brush chicken with reserved 2 tablespoons enchilada sauce. Bake uncovered 1 hour longer or until chicken is fork-tender, its juices run clear and skin is slightly crisp. Success Be sure to use converted rice in this recipe and not regular white rice. The acidity in the salsa and enchilada sauce prevents the non-converted rice from becoming tender. A delicacy with bananas. And something very easy to make. Few ingredients but a great recipe. Delicious. Ingredients: 2 ripe bananas 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons brown sugar ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ cup rum Some vanilla ice cream First we will have to melt the butter. We will do this in a frying pan on low heat. We will add the sugar little by little. It is very important to stir continuously. When the butter and the sugar are well mixed, we will add the cinnamon and half the rum. We will mix well and then we will add the bananas. We will cook the bananas. Do this always on low heat. Cook the bananas till they are tender. Now we will heat the rest of the rum in another pan. Then we will pour it onto the pan with the bananas. Flame the rum very carefully. Then serve it with vanilla ice cream. And just enjoy! ************************* FOR A GOOD LAUGH......This is for the over 50 generation: I thought about the 30 year business I ran with 1800 employees, all without a Blackberry that played music, took videos, pictures and communicated with Facebook and Twitter. I signed up under duress for Twitter and Facebook, so my seven kids, their spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with only 140 characters of space. That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree, Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program within the texting world. My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of every thing except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag. The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at Barnes and Noble talking to my wife as everyone in the nearest 50 yards was glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it, and I got a little loud. I mean the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10 minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-ul-ating". You would think that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-tur n at the next light. Then when I would make a right turn instead, it was not good. When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy, the GPS lady, at least she loves me. To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have run around digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry baskets when the phone rings. The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on something themselves but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check out just knocks me for a loop. I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused, but I never remember to take them in with me. Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare at me with a blank look. I was recently asked if I tweet. I answered, No, but I do toot a lot." **************************** LITTLE RALPHY ON MATH'S A teacher asks her class, 'If there are 5 birds sitting on a fence and you shoot one of them, how many will be left?' She calls on little Ralphy. He replies, 'None, they will all fly away with the first gunshot.' The teacher replies, 'The correct answer is 4, but I like your thinking..' _____________________________________________ Then little RALPHY says, 'I have a question for YOU. There are 3 women sitting on a bench having ice cream: One is delicately licking the sides of the triple scoop of ice cream. The second is gobbling down the top and sucking the cone. The third is biting off the top of the ice cream. Which one is married?' The teacher, blushing a great deal, replied, 'Well, I suppose the one that's gobbled down the top and sucked the cone.' To which Little RALPHY replied, 'The correct answer is 'the one with the wedding ring on,' but I like your thinking.' --------------------------------------------------------------------- LITTLE RALPHY ON MATH Little RALPHY returns from school and says he got an F in arithmetic. 'Why?' asks the father? 'The teacher asked 'How much is 2x3,'' I said '6', replies RALPHY. 'But that's right!' says his dad. 'Yeah, but then she asked me 'How much is 3x2?'' 'What's the f....... difference?' asks the father. 'That's what I said!' ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LITTLE RALPHY ON ENGLISH Little RALPHY goes to school, and the teacher says, 'Today we are going to learn multi-syllable words, class. Does anybody have an example of a multi-syllable word?' RALPHY says 'Mas-tur-bate..' Miss Rogers smiles and says, 'Wow, little RALPHY, that's a mouthful.' Little RALPHY says, 'No, Miss Rogers, you're thinking of a blowjob.' ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LITTLE RALPHY ON GRAMMAR One day, during lessons on proper grammar, the teacher asked for a show of hands from those who could use the word 'beautiful' in the same sentence twice. First, she called on little Suzie, who responded with, 'My father bought my mother a beautiful dress and she looked beautiful in it.' 'Very good, Suzie,' replied the teacher. She then called on little Michael. 'My mummy planned a beautiful banquet and it turned out beautifully..' She said, 'Excellent, Michael!' Then the teacher reluctantly called on little RALPHY. 'Last night at the dinner table, my sister told my father that she was pregnant, and he said 'Beautiful, just f..... beautiful!'' ______________________________________________________________ LITTLE RALPHY ON GETTING OLDER Little RALPHY was sitting on a park bench munching on one candy bar after another. After the 6th one a man on the bench across from him said, 'Son, you know eating all that candy isn't good for you. It will give you acne, rot your teeth, and make you fat.' Little RALPHY replied, 'My grandfather lived to be 107 years old.' The man asked, 'Did your grandfather eat 6 candy bars at a time?' Little RALPHY answered, 'No, he minded his own f....... business. ********************************* DOG TIPS: Today I want to provide some specific tips on how to avoid 6 "preventable" conditions. Here are some things you can do to ensure your dog stays healthy. 1. Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) - This disease is most often genetic and cannot be prevented. It is most common in Dachshund dogs due to a genetic problem with the disc. You can minimize the chance of this problem by preventing your dog from jumping off the bed or furniture. Provide a ramp if needed to assist your dog getting off and on furniture. 2. Gastric Torsion (Bloat) - This is a life-threatening condition resulting from a distended stomach that rotates into an abnormal position (torsion). Untreated, it results in death. It is most common in large breed, deep-chested dogs (such as the Great Dane). Many veterinarians will prophylactically "pexy" or stabilize the stomach to prevent it from occurring in susceptible breeds. If you own a Great Dane, standard Poodle, Saint Bernard, Gordon setter, Irish setter, Doberman pinscher, Old English sheepdog, or Weimaraner, you may want to discuss this with your veterinarian. Another thing you can do to help prevent this condition is to divide meals into 2 or 3 meals per day rather than one large meal. Feed a mixture of canned food and dry food. Avoid elevated feeders. Any diet changes should be made gradually over a period of 3 to 5 days. Feed susceptible dogs individually and if possible, in a quiet location. When buying a dog, ask about family history of bloat and stay away from breed lines with a prominent history. 3. Foreign Body Ingestion (Small Intestine) - This condition is entirely preventable. A foreign body is caused by the ingestion of an object that can't pass through the intestine. Common objects include underwear, socks, pantyhose, coins and toys. How can you prevent it? Closely supervise your dog to ensure that he doesn't ingest household items. Provide durable toys such as the Kong®. If your dog chews and ingests anything - call your veterinarian or local emergency clinic immediately. 4. Cruciate Rupture - This condition is due to a rupture of a ligament in the knee. It is difficult to prevent, as you cannot predict how or when it will happen. It can occur to any dog at any time when running or playing. You may minimize the changes by resting your dog when he is tired. Don't over exercise him. 5. Foreign Body Ingestion (Stomach) - This condition is also preventable. This is similar to condition #4 but the foreign object is caught in the stomach rather than the intestine. Keep all items that your dog might ingest out of his reach. Observe his behavior when playing with toys to ensure he doesn't try to "eat" them. 6. Pin in Broken Limb - This condition is a fracture or broken bone, which is treated with a surgical pin to stabilize the bone. Broken bones can be preventable. Many broken bones in dogs occur from being hit by a car. You can prevent this by ensuring your dog is on a leash and does not run free. In small or toy dogs, broken bones can result from being dropped or stepped on. Take special care with small dogs. We hope this helps you to better understand some common conditions in dogs and how to best prevent them in your dog. Hopefully your dog won't ever acquire these conditions. But, if something ever happens, you need to be prepared. ********************************** Pregnant Turkey *This is priceless - would love to do this.* One year at Thanksgiving, my mom went to my sister's house for the traditional feast. Knowing how gullible my sister is, my mom decided to play a trick. She told my sister that she needed something from the store. When my sister left, my mom took the turkey out of the oven, removed the stuffing, stuffed a Cornish hen, and inserted it into the turkey, and re-stuffed the turkey. She then placed the bird(s) back in the oven. When it was time for dinner, my sister pulled the turkey out of the oven and proceeded to remove the stuffing. When her serving spoon hit something, she reached in and pulled out the little bird. With a look of total shock on her face, my mother exclaimed, "Patricia, you've cooked a pregnant bird!" At the reality of this horrifying news, my sister started to cry. It took the family two hours to convince her that turkeys lay eggs! Yep..................SHE'S BLONDE!

Romans 13:6 “This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.†Why Does God Allow Suffering Part I "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it."1 More than a hundred years ago, a lonely, poor boy from Germany came to the United States. His first job was for four dollars a week as a helper in a tiny store in Ohio. Since the owner allowed him to sleep at night in a big packing case in the store without paying any rent, he was able to save one dollar a week. His next job at a bank paid him eight dollars a week. Here he slept in a loft over the bank office and continued to save all he could. One day he saw some musical instruments for sale that reminded him how he and his friend back in Germany used to make such instruments. So he sent his life's savings of $700 to his friends in Germany and had them ship a supply of their instruments. The first shipment sold very quickly. He sent for more and was on his way to becoming a successful businessman. The business this boy started eventually manufactured such musical instruments as pianos, organs, music boxes, and player pianos. It became a multimillion dollar business. The boy's name? Rudolph Wurlitzer. Chances are, had this boy not started out lonely and penniless, he wouldn't have achieved what he did. His difficult circumstances generated the motivation that made him successful. Life's like that. Because we live in a sinful world, difficult times, economic hardships, business setbacks, sicknesses, sorrows, heartbreaks, and crises come to all of us at some time. When they do, we often feel like we've struck out and failed. However, the only real failure in life is not to get up one more time than we've been knocked down. The Chinese have two characters for the word crisis—one means danger; the other, opportunity. How right they are! In every crisis there is a danger of becoming better or bitter, or of being defeated or accepting the opportunity for growth. The question is: How can we turn crises and suffering into opportunities? First, we need to realize that we have a choice. Our difficulties can make us bitter or better. They can become a stumbling block or a stepping stone. They can make us resentful or we can see in them an opportunity to be creative. The choice, however, is ours. "We also rejoice in our sufferings because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."2 In ancient times people used an instrument called a tribulum. It was used to beat grain in order to divide the chaff from the wheat. It's the word from which we get our word "tribulation." In the development of human character it's tribulation that divides "the chaff from the wheat." As we noted yesterday, the crises, or tribulations of life, can make us bitter or better. The choice is ours. Today's Scripture reading affirms this truth. Second, to turn our crises into opportunities, we also need to accept and master our problems—not run from them. Most of us remember the story of Daniel being thrown into the lions' den because of his religious convictions. Imagine what might have happened had Daniel denied his problem, or if he had rebelled—and justifiably so—against being thrown into a den of lions and then struggled desperately to get out. The lions probably would have torn him to shreds in short order. Daniel didn't even try to defend himself—against the authorities or the lions. As terrifying as it was, Daniel accepted his situation. I can imagine him thinking, "I'm in this predicament. I can't escape. I choose to trust God. How can I make the best of it?" Undoubtedly, it was the acceptance of his situation as well as his faith in God that saved him. Note, though, his faith didn't save him from the lion's den. It saved him in it! Sometimes, or even often in life, before God is going to deliver us from difficult circumstances, we need to find deliverance in them. It is human nature to want to escape or run from suffering, but doing this doesn't help us grow, and sometimes we learn too late that what we escaped to is worse than what we escaped from. Unfortunately, we rarely change or grow unless we are hurting sufficiently. This is why James wrote in the Bible, "Consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."2 "Consider it pure joy, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."3 Third. To turn our crises into opportunities, we need to face causes. If there is one thing in life that I have learned, it is this: the problem we see is not necessarily the problem that is. For instance, what we blame many of our problems on—especially personal ones—very often is not the real cause. What we see are mostly symptoms, and as counselor John Townsend says, symptoms very often are "the fruit of a deeper root." For instance, my criticism of someone else may be caused more by my jealousy or negative attitude rather than by what that person did. My hurt feelings or anger at another person may be a reflection of my insecurity or my unresolved hostility. I may unconsciously be looking for a peg to hang my anger on; that is, an excuse to blame somebody else for my unresolved problems. Only as we become courageously honest with ourselves and face the actual causes of our difficulties can we begin to resolve them. Jesus Christ expressed a universal principle when he said, "You will know the truth and the truth will set you at liberty."4 Fourth. To turn our crises into opportunities, we need to ask the question, "What might God be trying to say to me, or to teach me, through my adverse circumstances?" There is almost always some valuable lesson to be learned. Remember, because he was in prison John Bunyan wrote his literary masterpiece, Pilgrim's Progress. And through rising above her severe handicaps, blind Helen Keller became a great inspiration to millions. And so it is with each of us. No matter what happens to us, God wants to use our suffering to strengthen us, to mature us, and to make us better persons. If you are going through a time of sickness, sorrow, depression, financial setback, a broken relationship, or feel you have failed in some way, can you accept that God wants to use your suffering to help you grow and become closer to him? Can you ask him to help you see what you might be contributing to your situation, for the courage to do your part in resolving it, and through it help you to grow? After a long winter, spring eventually comes and with it new leaves appear on the trees in all their refreshing beauty. In the summer they thrive. In the fall they die. But in dying their beauty is greater than in the spring. But the tree doesn't die. The falling leaves just make further growth possible. And that's the cycle of life—struggle, pain, beauty, growth. Apparently, in his later years, Renoir, the famous French painter, suffered badly from arthritis. On one occasion his close friend, Matisse, questioned him, "My friend, why do you keep on painting when you are in so much pain?" To which Renoir thoughtfully replied, "The pain passes, but the beauty remains!" For all who trust their life to God and ask him to use their struggles to help them grow, their pain, too, will pass, but their beauty will remain—forever. As God's Word, the Bible, says, "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall."5 Be sure to invest your pain. Don't waste it. Invest it wisely in your own growth and in the growth of others. As God's Word also says, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God."6 Suggested prayer: "Dear God, in all of life's painful circumstances, please face me with the truth of anything that I may be contributing in any way to cause or worsen my situation. Help me also to accept my problems as allowed by you so that I will learn from and, in so doing, become a more mature, loving and helpful Christian. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name. Amen." *********************** WORD FOR THE DAY: per·se·vere /?p?rs?'v??r/ [pur-suh-veer] verb, -vered, -ver·ing. –verb (used without object) 1. to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly. 2. to persist in speech, interrogation, argument, etc.; insist. –verb (used with object) 3. to bolster, sustain, or uphold: unflagging faith that had persevered him.
