The fumes make you cough with just a trace. So I think it makes the mites cough until they fall off of the bees. Oxalic is “safe” to use because the bees might also visit your flowers and honey naturally contains this compound. Other treatments you would have to remove the honey boxes before treatment. Either way I don’t treat until I have removed any honey that would be for human consumption ….and I wear a respirator when using the fumes. I also installed the mouse guards to keep the field mice from going into the hives as the weather cools off.
There are several chemical treatments but I use a natural compound oxalic acid which is heated in a small device which turn the powder into fumes and the fumes are directed into the hive.
