 "Daybreak" by Maxfield Parrish (1922)
AS THE SILENCE IS BROKEN
Slowly opening my eyes to her peaceful song, the first light of morning gently awakens my senses, welcoming me to the day. Dawn's muted whisper begins to break the silence of darkness as Night fades, new life refreshing my heart and my soul with the new Day.
And as I open my eyes, the magic of the sunrise unfolds along the eastern edge of the horizon where Day meets Night, in a symphony of crimson and gold painted boldly across the canvas of morning. And within one eloquent moment, the sun emerges through the darkness and breaks the silence of the Night.
For a new day has begun.

"Look for the stars, you'll say that there are none; Look up a second time, and, one by one, You mark them twinkling out with silvery light, And wonder how they could elude the sight!"
William Wordsworth "Calm is the Fragrant Air" (1832)
TAKING A SECOND LOOK
As I look to the sky both day and night, what I find there is such sheer delight. And while I might not, at first glance notice too much, just give me a moment as my eyes adjust to the lights in the sky twinkling so bright and so high above me.
My imagination follows them wherever they go, their stories and myths so powerfully told, in patterns sweeping across the darkened sky, tiny points of light creating paintings so bold. And as the moon ascends toward midnight and beyond, my dreams travel with her toward daylight once more when I will look to the skies as Dawn reveals the day.
And stopping to take a second look at dawn, at the skies of morning and what awaits me there.
For as the red-tailed hawks paint sweeping patterns across a crystal-blue morning sky, I can only treasure the view and give thanks for the day this one that is set out in front of me today.

POINTS OF LIGHT
Streaking points of brilliance illuminating the shadows of day amid the dark and dusky recesses of imagination's open spaces, awakening slumbering senses searching for meaning and direction.

And finding within their translucent petals, iridescent dreams, so fragile and delicate, awakening in the sun,

impressions lingering long after the very first glance that in inhaling their fragrance, peace at once and once more sweeps over this restless and searching heart,

again settled and soothed as the mist dissipates into the first light of day, breaking through the silence of the morning.

ENJOYING THE VIEW
Each and every day in this wonderful way I get a chance, (so blessed am I), to float through the air with all of my friends, so high above the clouds in quite rarified air, where for a few moments we get such a better view of everything we want to see, the good, the bad, the fantasies; the hopes the dreams, and reality through words that flow through each others' pens, through images and music captured in a digital way and shared in ways impossible not that long ago. Such treasures I find there before I must return to the ground once more, though with a much lighter step than I was taking before, and a smile on my face, as I open reality's door and step once again back into my day.

FRIDAY BYWAYS WITH BARBARA K IN CELEBRATION OF HAIKU AND THE ARTS
BYWAYS #20 -- (Posted 4-14-11)
Welcome to "Friday Byways" this week as we celebrate Haiku and the Arts. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful words and images and music with us over the past week.
For the longest time now I've been fascinated with and intrigued by public art in all its forms -- mosaics, murals, sculpture, and the list goes on and on.
So you might imagine the excitement I felt when a couple of years ago on my first day of a one-month stay in New Zealand I was taking the bus from Auckland to my destination near Tauranga on the Bay of Plenty, the bus made one of its many stops in a small town, so small in fact, that I didn't even catch its name at the time (later coming to find out that it is Katikati) located in the northern part of the North Island on the Bay of Plenty.
But I did notice murals and sculptures and lots of public art along the main street which couldn't have been more than three blocks but which, I came to later find out, was home to more than 45 pieces of very well-known public art.
I knew that as soon as I had access to a car I would have to go back and find this city. Two weeks later my husband arrived and we rented a car. Finding this very special place was the very first day trip we took in the car.
Katikati, New Zealand is a very small city of about 3,500 residents with a love for the arts. Settled in 1875 by Irish settlers from County Tyrone, its "downtown" is only about three blocks long and has no stop lights at all.
But it certainly does value and pay tribute to the arts in so many forms:
Sculpture
Mosaics
Murals
and other folk art pieces

This is just a few of them.
And at the end of our walk through the town this --
A tribute to poetry and Haiku:
Each rock inscribed with poetry:
morning cloud reclaiming the hills from early light ~Ernest Berry~
distant ranges magic spells under the bright sky ~John Knight~
strangers they stop and ask me the way if only I knew ~Barry Morrall~
And on that day we also enjoyed some beautiful views . . . .
So this week I invite you to come back and share with us in the forum (posting as new pieces to the forum) -- some short pieces-- haiku (5-7-5) or tankas or senryu (though not limited at all to short ones) -- whatever form(s) you prefer and in whatever format -- word, image, music -- short or long or in between.
Please feel free to use any of these photos you find here or bring photos or images of your own to share with us.
You are always welcome to look back through the posts in the forum and write to any of the previous themes as well -- reflections, rainbows, pathways, tranquility some of them. We all look forward to what you share with us.

It's always such fun to watch the little ones play their ball games on the weekend, and occasionally, as was the case yesterday, we're treated to a mid-week game as a bonus. Always highlights of my week . . . .

BIG-LEAGUE DREAMING
Swallows criss-cross a sky-blue and pink canvas of evening; little boys with big baseball dreams swing their bats and run the bases, their shadows long as the muted sunlight of late afternoon begins to fade into the outfield. One by one swing, swing, swinging their bats, one by one run, run, running around and around the bases, one by one, until their shadows melt into the darkness.
And tonight, as the moon rises toward midnight, the little boys of the sandlot will be dreaming big dreams and playing big games where kids are always kids, perpetual winners all.

FREEDOM'S SONG
Each morning as I peruse my ever-growing list of what I want to do today, where to go, which direction to take, what to see, what I want to accomplish in these precious few hours allotted to me each day, I remember at once how blessed I really am to have the freedom to do as I have planned, to take whichever path suits my fancy as I choose. And at the same time I must remind myself again that I have freedoms denied to so many whose hopes and dreams go unfulfilled, their freedoms suppressed, their days full of agony and perpetual despair.
So as this day unfolds, I remember to give thanks to those who have made and continue to make possible the freedoms I enjoy. And I pray for peace and freedom for all every day and everywhere.
