LOOKING FORWARD TO VACATION
I'm looking forward to vacation, can't get it off my mind; it's that time of year, and I hear vacation calling me. I'm dreaming of that day real soon when my flight lifts off the ground and takes me to the warm beaches I love and palm trees gently swaying in the afternoon breeze.
I look forward to the sandy beach that warms my toes each day; to the gentle surf that soothes my soul; to the mountain views that make my heart soar; to the birds outside my window and their morning symphony. And I look forward to the sunrise as I watch the day unfold across the canvas of the morning sky.
It's just a matter of weeks now, and I can hardly wait, as look forward to vacation and another sweet taste of Paradise.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?
Who would have thought and who could have known what treasures they'd become, those classics parked in our family's driveway right next to the yard. My dad's pride and joy, classic beauties each one -- the shiny black Dodge with the running boards that we all piled into on those Sunday afternoons for a ride in the country when families did those things -- way back then, back in the day.
And the '52 blue Ford, that smiled at us every morning and one of the first cars I actually do recall; and the long sleek Caddie, (my dad polished it each day) with its fins that made us smile as we watch him drive it back and forth to work and felt rather important when he took us for a ride.
But the one that captured my fancy then, and does so to this very day, was the that pink-and-grey Desoto '56 sitting in the car lot I passed by on the way to school each day. I loved it then (when I was much too young to drive) and I love it still today. And every time I take a look at that postcard I picked up from that dealership that I picked up one day when I stopped in to take a look on my way to school back then, I smile and remember fondly the classic car of my dreams and all the others since then -- who ever would have thought?
Just cars back then and treasured classics now.

All my life I have lived and behaved very much like the sandpiper - just running down the edges of different countries and continents, 'looking for something'.

NOVA SCOTIA WITHIN MY HEART
I've never been to Nova Scotia but I know one day I will, for there's something about that rugged place, the Nova Scotia of my dreams, the craggy rocks and shores, the sea birds and the fishermen, the fiddlers who touch my soul with their strings and their rhythms and stepdancing feet as I feel each beat within their tunes, the Cape Breton melodies that draw me in to the Nova Scotia soul.
And as I read the poetry of one who loved it so, I am that sandpiper the poet describes, who skirts the edge of the shore, as the tide comes in and leaves again, piquing my curiosity and stirring my soul, as daydream fantasies delightfully encroach upon the time and space that is my day, as I crave even more, and desire to see and feel for myself what has drawn this poetic dreamer and so many others and me to the craggy shores and seafaring life so much a part of the Nova Scotia heart where I simply can't help but find myself within myself, as I skirt the shore with the sandpiper and listen to the maritime song.

REACHING WITHIN Reflections within the magic of Night, shimmering reflections, imagination's remembrances golden treasures recalled, as reaching for them, fragile each one in their way, glimmerings of thought, illuminations fading as the dark has finally enveloped the day; landscapes brief and ephemeral, fleeting within enlightening moments and treasured by this sentimental heart reaching out for them. And catching a glimpse as they pass by, I keep them safely within this heart of mine, drawn into and at one with their magical flow as they briefly pass by and recalled once again within and across the darkness of this magically shimmering night. FROM THE DAY YOU WERE BORN My heart stood stillfor just a moment or two and skipped a few beats on the day you were born, each one of youas recalling those daysfrom the distance of now,I can't help but smilewhen I think of how far we've come over the yearsto become who we areamid laughter and tears.Children learn from their parents,at least that's what they say,but we've learned from youfrom the beginning, from the day you were born. You taught us how to lookat the things that came upsituations big and small;how to see them with eyesthat weren't so quick to judge;you taught us how to hear you,and even more important than that,to listen to the wise things you said, each one of you.And you taught us to be fair, not to be so quick to judge. And when it was timefor you to be on your own,you taught us, each one of you,how to let go and allow you to flyand to test those new wings. When the time was rightwe all knew what to doas we stood back and watched you begin to soar.So many things we've learned from yousince that miracle of birth, from the day you were born.

TRAVELINGS AND RAMBLINGS
Down the country roads, high country and low, through the rambling byways of my life and of my heart, so many places to go, so many things to see out there on the roads I have to travel, the ones in front of me.
Just a few things to take, not too many, not too much, just what I can carry and toss into the trunk. No extra baggage to weigh me down as I leave it all behind; no fuss, no bother, just me and the road for I'm the wandering kind.
Just a few things I'll carry along with me, a few strings to strum, a little camera in my pack, a few pens and pencils and paper scraps to scribble down some thoughts, the ramblings of my heart as I wander along the country roads I find, no specific direction, no agenda in mind, just me and the roads I find in front of me, just me and just a little time.

AT THE FIRST LIGHT OF THE DAWN
On an early September morning such a very long time ago, a young man was inspired to write some words straight from his heart as in the night a most powerful sight he had just witnessed there. And in a momentary flash, as he spied the flag still flying at first light of the dawn, he wrote the words we cherish still, the ones that live within our hearts as we proudly sing them today. And as we sing them, we stand so very tall for we know what they mean and what our flag represents, "The Star Spangled Banner" as it waves overhead. And blessed are we by those who give so much to protect and defend the liberties represented by our flag and those words so eloquently penned by young Francis Scott Key.

"O" STOOD FOR OPERATOR
We were curious about everything and fascinated by the sounds and the sights that we saw all around us and more. We wanted to know all about them, who made them and when; we took them apart again and again trying to figure out what made them work, how voices could squeeze through those skinny lines on the poles that connected our houses and the world that we knew, that transmitted our friendships and our innermost thoughts when we dialed each other up on that trusty rotary phone where O stood for Operator, that real live person on the other end of the line who, in case I had trouble dialing, could always put me through.
We were just kids back then and technology was new, bright and shiny and fascinating, that's all we knew and wanted to know more.
Now this treasure from the past joins others that we've known, the ones that sit on the shelves of the antique store in town and in the back corner of my closet down the hall reserved for such memories and wonderful things as the rotary phone.
