Across a Painted Sky
The late afternoon sun becoming one with the river spilling over into itself, the winter geese paint their evening journey across a sun-kissed sky, their destination their pattern, their way a familiar one as I watch them from the shore and marvel at their resolve and the beauty they share as the sun begins to set.

Just because they're fun to try even though the "forms" are such a challenge, a terzanelle (combination terza rima/villanelle) with an animal theme (template, definition and example at the end):
Orange, My Friend
My very orange friend, he brought joy to my days, my friend 'till the end.
In so many ways, my beloved orange cat, he brought joy to my days.
He was really good at that, for a traveler was he, my beloved orange cat.
An inspiration to me dreaming often in the day for a traveler was he.
As was often his way when I would see him there dreaming often in the day.
And I would wonder to where when I would see him there, my very orange friend, my friend 'till the end.

The Terzanelle, defined by ShadowPoetry.com as a poetry type which is a combination of the villanelle and the terza rima forms. It is a 19-line poem consisting of five interlocking triplets/tercets plus a concluding quatrain in which the first and third lines of the first triplet appear as refrains. The middle line of each triplet is repeated, reappearing as the last line of the succeeding triplet with the exception of the center line of the next-to-the-last stanza which appears in the quatrain. The rhyme and refrain scheme for the triplets is as follows:
1. A 2. B 3. A
4. b 5. C 6. B
7. c 8. D 9. C
10. d 11. E 12. D
13. e 14. F 15. E
Ending Type 1:
16. f 17. A 18. F 19. A
Ending Type 2:
16. f 17. F 18. A 19. A
Each line of the poem should be the same metrical length.
An example of one:
September
September, drifting in with glow of moon, You stifle Summer’s ardor. . . and she grieves. In guise of fire, then Fall comes all too soon.
Your breath grows cool. You’ll blow and loosen leaves. The hills and woodlands will reflect new hues. You stifle Summer’s ardor. . . and she grieves.
In Autumn’s chill, the colors are a ruse. For as you pass, the trees are set ablaze. The hills and woodlands then reflect new hues.
Though warmth may linger through your final days, old Sun is waning, yet he still seems strong! For as you pass, the trees are set ablaze.
September, you’re a melancholy song. Though time be short, you paint a brilliant dusk! Old sun is waning, yet he still seems strong.
October looms. . . Your ending will be brusque. September, drifting in with glow of moon, though time be short, you paint a brilliant dusk. In guise of fire, then Fall comes all too soon.

AUTUMN'S RAINBOWED DAY
Autumn's rainbow of color after a rain, crimson and golden upon a canvas of brilliant blue, broad strokes of color against the sky, their intricate patterns captivating my imagination on this afternoon in the Fall. as they pirouette from each branch, their delicate dance of soothing fall breezes as taking my hand, they blanket the ground on this crisp and cool fall day, in Autumn's final dance.
And on this afternoon, so quiet and still, subtle colors of autumn infuse the waters in front of me, barely a ripple in the peace and calm of this day.

Rainbow Magic
As my eye sweeps across the canvas that is my day I see the magic of a rainbow, in brilliant splashes of color gracing the meadows and hilltops bathed in the golden sunlight of a spring day; in the ripening fields and vineyards of Summer as far as my eye takes me; in that magical place where the sea ends and the sky begins at twilight and dawn; in the rust and red and gold of Autumn's blaze; in Winter's icy mantle, pristine and crystalline white with the first snowflakes. And on those days when gray colors my landscape, I remember the rainbow arching across a spring-shower velvet sky and the red-tailed hawk soaring above my mountaintops. And on those gray days I reach for that rainbow and savor the magic within each and every splash of color and marvel at the painted brushstrokes that I can't help but clearly see through that gray and misty haze.

Treasured
A box on the shelf rather tattered and worn, a most treasured possession though it hasn't been there very long.
And every once in a while I open this box of snippets and trinkets and half-written things as closing my eyes I reach way inside, as far as my memory will allow on this day.
And as far back as my memory can go I find in the box what I wanted to see, a word here and there, a photo or two, a phrase, a few jokes, all put there with care because even then I knew that on some of these days the smiles don't come as easily as I would want them to.
So as I consider a few treasures in my box that sits on this shelf, I put them all back because I just know there will come another time when all around me seems sad and I desperately need a lift and a boost in my mood. And then once again I'll reach in my box of treasures and find just one more thing to make me smile once more.

ANSWERING THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR
Every once in a while when things are very quiet and I'm paying very close attention I can hear the sound of my own voice as it rather quietly eases its way through the inner passageways of my imagination and my heart. and, finding a comfortable enough spot, allows itself to be heard.
Not a voice that I'm used to hearing, even I have trouble sometimes recognizing it as my own voice. But my voice it is, and I embrace it and have become rather accustomed to hearing it now.
So when in these early morning hours I hear a faint knock on the door of my imagination, I open it up and we have a little chat, my voice and I, and occasionally our conversation makes its way to the blank pages in front of me.

Notes Across the Page It makes me laugh; it makes me cry, the music of my days and the music of my nights, turning my emotions inside out, making me sit up very tall. Familiar notes dancing across the pages of my imagination, taking me to places I've never been, Danube waltzing, Moldau magic, Alpine meadows and mountain majestic, Venice canals. Unfamiliar notes carrying my emotions and my thoughts to places never even dreamed. The music of my life gently tiptoes into those corners and empty spaces of my imagination, inspiring, motivating, releasing. And with their sweet inspiratiion I can sometimes write my own lyrics in words flowing from my pen and across the page. (c) bak 8-23-10

Face to Face
Tranquil waters flowing over and around the rough pathways leading to the most hidden spaces of my heart and my soul, I am mesmerized by their cadence as they softly caress the roughness of each one on their way. And I am made smooth as they soothe the ragged edges and rough textures of my most inner self.
And in these sweet moments of enlightenment I can't help but meet my inner self face to face and step into a new tomorrow no longer weighed down by the burden that I was carrying.
