THE BLOCK PARTY FROM HELL
Posted On 09/19/2020 06:01:53

I was STARVING !!! This was absolutely the last block party I was going to attend at a former co-worker and friend of my wife in Hackensack, New Jersey last summer.

. Now we're invited to an end of summer block party next weekend. . I could spend two hours in traffic getting there from our Long Island home. Great.!! Just what I want to do on my day off is sit in traffic and then sit with a bunch of zombies I have no interest in being with. I told my wife that I'm only going if I can bring food and liquor.

Okay-my wife's friend cater to her elderly Jewish parents. I can respect that. They're Kosher-on restricted diets-no problem-but this year put out some other food besides rotten deviled eggs ,cheeses, and salads. I want real food-something I can sink my teeth into. Give me steak, chicken, beef, pork, corned beef-isn't that Kosher enough? My choices shouldn't be limited to baby carrots ,cherry tomatoes, celery, lettuce, and several varieties of unsalted nuts. What am I? a squirrel?

Every other family and friends on the block had platters of cold cuts: humongous heroes filled with sausages, meatballs, turkey, roast beef and veal- even dishes filled with lobster and shrimp. There were grills with hamburgers and hotdogs ,barbecued chicken, and ribs. Beer was flowing out of bottles on every table...except ours !!!

We had borscht,(yucch) and diluted lemonade and iced tea for the little brats that were exploding water balloons all over the table and eating cotton candy from one of the free stands. Hey?? How about a nice porterhouse steak for our table?

Anyway, I told my wife either to get new friends who live on our side of the George Washington Bridge or else I'm bringing some fried chicken and a sausage parmesan hero that I can heat up in her friend's microwave ...for me. AND a 6 pack of Heineken Premium Light . . If my wife hadn't brought Dunkin Donuts and mesquite BBQ potato chips last year, I would have certainly starved.

I'm not going there to stare at low sodium ziti with no sauce and some shrubbery with dressing I'm supposed to think is food. I'm in no way being disrespectful to the elderly Jewish couple but this is not a Passover meal and I'm not Bugs Bunny.!!

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN KANSAS

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN KANSAS

With all the record number of hurricanes bombarding the islands in the Caribbean and the USA , the national weather bureau here on the top of Mount Everest has the world's most prominent meteorologists clamoring and disputing about why are only hurricanes being given names. "What about a simple drizzle?" was asked by the esteemed weatherman, Al Roker. There are the trade winds and the Santa Ana winds and of course the wind they called Mariah.

So,these prognosticators and elite forecasters have decided that many of the unheralded weather terms be given their duly deemed nomenclature. For example, there's the front known as Stationary Stanley, Warm Front Wendy, and Rainy Ralph. Breezy Betty and Light Shower Lennie were among the names chosen.

Let's night forget Overcast Oscar and his cousin, Occluded Orville. Misty Monica might bring a tear to allergy sufferers in the summer months while Tropical Storm Tyrone mount be mounting a threat . Cloudy skies Claire might ruin a perfectly good beach day as well as Drizzly Daphne hampering someone's hopes of a tan with Sunny Sally. Watch out for Tornado Terry.

Scientists have been busy reading the lists of the most popular baby names . The possibilities are endless. Myself? I am partial to Chinook Winds Charlie. So get outside and take a gander at the sky and feel the air caressing your body . We are, after all, just dust in the wind.

IN THE TUNE OF THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB THEME

NOW it's time to say goodbye

to all my company

That's because in just a month

I'll be seventy.

I am old

I am old

are the harsh words by my daughter

I am told.

Fifty wasn't quite so bad

But sixty was much worse

Now it's time to say goodbye

My next car is a hearse.

I am old

I am old

Old age has put my life

on final hold.

Hey There Hi There Ho There

I'm as ancient as can be

Soon my last breaths coming in my

STEADY AS SHE GOES

STEADY AS SHE GOES

My wife and I went to the Boat Show last weekend at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan, NY. I must confess I am very ignorant about boats and their costs and upkeep and nautical directions I hear like port, stern, bow, starboard. etc.

The only boats I have been on I can recall are the Staten Island Ferry, the boat that took us to me to the Magic Kingdom in Disney World, a sightseeing boat near Alcatraz, and a sightseeing tour of the upper Hudson River in NY where the most memorable sight was a barge . Oh yes...I was on a boat..or was it a ship?..a replica of the Mayflower in Cape Cod on vacation years ago....and a small boat years ago in East Quogue in the Hamptons of long Island. Ok..I'm no Captain Ahab.

Be that as it may, I convinced my wife to go with me to the Javits Center (about an hour drive from our Long Island home). I've always admired beautiful yachts and boats and sailing vessels. I know they are hard to maintain and often stay covered in docks most of the year and with quite costly fees. Two friends of mine and their families have owned boats on Long island . A cousin of mine owns a boat a bit North of us in an area called Rye,NY . He's invited my wife and myself on his boat but we never took him up on his offer.

As far as buying a boat plus the other exorbitant fees in keeping one, to be quite honest, just paying for our cars' insurances and repairs is a draining expense....but you never know. Maybe I'll hit the lottery one day.

Anyway, what we saw at the Javits center was incredible. The place was filled with gorgeous boats of every size..The place was jammed. There must be a lot of really rich folks around yet in these tough financial times. I saw a gigantic yacht with high ceilings, leather sofas, a full kitchen with bedrooms. The electronic gadgets and entertainment centers on so many of these boats is amazing.

I saw cabin cruisers and personal watercraft, fishing boats, sail boats, inboards, outboards, jet drives, runabouts, pontoons...what the hell is a runabout or a pontoon I had to ask someone. My wife and I got quite an education plus learned some new seafaring terminology. Unfortunately there was no Love Boat or pirate ship. I always wanted to walk the plank.

All in all, our trip to the Boat Show was an enjoyable fascinating wonderful experience. On our way home we stopped at a Toys R Us where I purchased a tug boat to put in my bubble bath along with Mr. Ducky

HOLD YOUR HORSES

WHOA NELLIE. This year's Kentucky Derby coming after the Belmont's usual third jewel of racing's Triple Crown will be much different than usual .The race is scheduled for September 5th. There is no clear favorite of this field of fourteen entries.

The jockeys are all very excited and can't wait to show off their athletic abilities and speed when the starting gates open. This will be the first year that the run for the roses will be held without horses.

One long shot entry, a diminutive four foot eleven inches jockey, refused to comment when asked by reporters how he felt about this novel race. I"I have to see a man about a horse" was his only response.Another arrogant veteran jockey who was asked to get off his high horse by reporters said if he doesn't finish the race in the top three, he would put himself out to pasture.

SHRIMP OF SHRIMP TOAST

SHRIMP OF SHRIMP TOAST

I ordered shrimp toast last week from a local Chinese take out restaurant. I hadn't had it in years. There were these 4 triangular shaped rather small pieces for me to eat for a whopping $4.25. They tasted fine. I dipped them in duck sauce but was very disappointed of such a small portion for that price.

I was thinking they'd be much bigger. I haven't had any on a pu pu platter since eons ago. I realize this was an appetizer but gee whiz? I was thinking they'd be more of a size like a pop tart.....

ONE other question while I have your attention. A pint of won ton soup or egg drop soup is the same price at this location. . . So why is a mixture that has half as many won tons, a dollar more? They're taking less won tons and putting them in egg drop soup. Why the hell is the price higher? Is it more work to scoop out less won tons? I find this is the same for every take out who sell this mixture. .

Now I love our Chinese take out foods but I don't like getting ripped off. I still need my compulsory egg roll .No more shrimp toast from that place anymore .My chicken in oyster sauce and won ton soup and obligatory egg roll will have to suffice.

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN....make that Queens

I don't know about you but my wife and I are nuts when it comes to our two new trees in our backyard . We both love fruit and can't get enough of in season oranges, pears, apples, grapes, blueberries, etc...you name it. .........So....it came as no surprise when my wife decided to order two watermelon trees shipped to our house early this spring from the orchards of Florida's famous "Watermelon Grove"

Our watermelon trees belong to a family called Curcurbitacae maximus and we are already reaping ripe rewarding results after its blossoming 2-3 months here in our backyard. We make sure to water our watermelon trees every day as recommended and make sure our watermelons are at least 3 feet between them on the branches they grow .......We use a special loam infused pickled nutrient rich jelly at the base of the tree that helps repel parasites like watermelon weevils or arboreal fruit flies.

These great tasting watermelons, some the size of distended basketballs, provide us with vitamin "C",beta carotene, lycopene, and other antioxidants with no fat or cholesterol. Our daughter is just as nuts about our backyard trees as we are. "The watermelon doesn't fall far from the tree". But if it falls on your head, you'd better be checked for a concussion.

THE ANACIN STORY

THE ANACIN STORY

Have a headache? My wife gets them from time to time and finds Anacin works the best for her. She had a big bottle of 300 pills I had bought some time ago that she shared with our daughter who kept some in her apartment. I haven't bought any in maybe a couple of years. Anyway, as my wife's supply is almost out and the bottle is past the expiration date, I went to a local Walgreens pharmacy.

i asked a young man working in the aisle if they had any,not seeing any Anacin in the analgesic section. "Anacin", he said. Is that a brand name? I said, "Yes, Anacin. it's been around for 100 years. The worker there was in his 20s or 30s maybe but had never heard of Anacin. He got a store manager who said they don't carry Anacin anymore. He said I can order it through a Walgreens app and have it shipped to the store where I could buy it. Or he said, I can have it shipped to my home address, but it would cost a lot more.

This is crazy...Am I so old now that Anacin has become a relic or antique item? Is Anacin becoming extinct like our friendly dodo bird? Anacin, if you don't know is just aspirin and caffeine.. I called my wife before I left the store saying I can get her Excedrin. That's aspirin and caffeine and acetaminophen (Tylenol). She said maybe they'll have Anacin at another store.

So when I got home I called a local CVS pharmacy before driving over to see if they had any Anacin. I waited over 5 minutes with no one picking up in the non-pharmacy option I hit on the phone. So I hit the pharmacy option next. I know in the past, that when the store is busy and I know it's understaffed nobody will answer the call, even in the pharmacy, which is pretty disgusting. You can be on hold listening to music and messages saying how important your call is, or just hearing it ring which is what happened on this call. After 10 minutes, I hung up. Now I have a headache. I need an Anacin.

WHAT'S FOR DESSERT, DEAR?

WHAT'S FOR DESSERT, DEAR?

In one of the most bizarre fascinating items I just read about, there was this couple, who ,(to put it mildly) mated....I hope the dude enjoyed the sex because right after his head was bitten off by the very female he had this coitus close encounter with. If that doesn't gross you out, she later devoured his corpse for nourishment.

Well, that's part of life and death..................when you're a male preying mantis.
